Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew Everything

The name on the screen seemed to glow brighter than anything else in the room.

Sarah.

Nobody moved.

The phone continued ringing on the table.

A small, ordinary sound.

But somehow it felt louder than every argument, every confession, and every painful truth that had been revealed that night.

Ethan looked at his father.

“Who is Sarah?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

His hand hovered over the phone.

For a moment, I thought he would let it keep ringing.

That he would choose silence again.

It was what he had always done.

Hide.

Wait.

Hope time would erase the damage.

But Ethan reached forward.

“Answer it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Ethan—”

“No.””

My son’s voice was calm.

“Not this time.””

Daniel stared at him.

Ethan continued.

“You spent eighteen years deciding what I was allowed to know.””

He pointed toward the phone.

“Tonight, I decide.””

The room held its breath.

Daniel finally picked up the phone.

He pressed the answer button.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched his face.

At first, there was nothing.

Then his expression changed.

His eyes widened slightly.

“Sarah…”

The name sounded strange coming from his mouth.

Like a word from another life.

A life none of us knew existed.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Daniel looked around the room.

“I can’t talk about this right now.””

Another pause.

Then his face hardened.

“No. Don’t come here.””

My heart started pounding.

Because whoever was on the other end of that phone had power over him.

Real power.

The kind that came from knowing secrets.

Daniel listened.

Then he whispered:

“You shouldn’t have kept that.””

The room went silent.

He ended the call.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Ethan asked:

“Who is she?””

Daniel placed the phone down.

“She’s nobody.””

Ethan gave a small, sad laugh.

“Dad.””

He shook his head.

“You really thought that would work?””

Daniel looked frustrated.

“This is not connected to what happened.””

Michael suddenly spoke.

“Yes, it is.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Don’t.””

Michael’s face was serious.

“Ethan deserves to know.””

I looked at Michael.

“You know her?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Because Sarah was there the day everything changed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt a cold feeling move through me.

“The day everything changed?””

Michael nodded.

“The day Daniel found out about the pregnancy complications.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who was Sarah?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Michael did.

“She was Daniel’s colleague at the time.””

A colleague.

The word sounded harmless.

But the tension in the room said otherwise.

Ethan looked between them.

“And?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“She was the person Daniel called after he left the doctor’s office.””

My chest tightened.

“You called her?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Listen—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

The years of swallowing my pain came rushing back.

“You spent years telling me you were alone.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was.””

I stared at him.

“You called another woman.””

“She was my friend.””

“Your friend?””

I laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“While I was carrying your child and terrified about what might happen, you went to another woman?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Then what was it like?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence said enough.

But Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Daniel didn’t have an affair.””

I felt confused.

“Then why hide her?””

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Because the truth is more complicated.””

Daniel sat down.

He looked exhausted.

Like the weight of the past had finally become too heavy to carry.

“Sarah was the only person who knew how afraid I was.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Mom didn’t know?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“No.””

That hurt.

Even after everything, it still hurt.

Because I had been his wife.

The person who loved him.

The person who stood beside him.

And he had chosen someone else to share his fear with.

“Why?”” I asked.

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Because I thought if I told you how scared I was, you would see me differently.””

I stared at him.

“You were afraid I would see you as weak?””

He nodded.

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“So instead, you made me feel weak.””

Daniel looked away.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ethan asked:

“What did Sarah tell you?””

Daniel looked at him.

“She told me something I didn’t want to hear.””

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She told me that I needed to stop thinking about the son I wanted and start thinking about the son I had.””

Ethan’s eyes softened slightly.

“Then she understood.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“More than you did?””

The question was painful.

Because Daniel knew the answer.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

Then Ethan asked:

“So why did you stop listening to her?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because she told me something else.””

“What?””

Daniel took a long breath.

“She told me that if I kept blaming your mother, one day I would lose both of you.””

My heart stopped.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Daniel had spent years protecting himself from a fear that eventually became reality.

Ethan looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you change?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I was ashamed.””

Michael nodded.

“And shame makes people do terrible things.””

The words hung there.

I thought about every cruel comment.

Every cold look.

Every moment Ethan wondered if he was enough.

All because Daniel could not face himself.

Then Ethan looked toward the front door.

“Is Sarah coming here?””

Daniel immediately looked up.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Everyone noticed.

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

“Why not?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Because she knows something else.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Something about the night you were born.””

Nobody moved.

Ethan’s face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked broken.

“I never told you because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then at Michael.

Then finally at Ethan.

“Afraid that if you knew everything…”

He stopped.

“Dad.””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“…you would never forgive me.””

The room was silent.

Then Ethan said:

“Tell me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Not tonight.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“No.””

“Ethan—”

“No more secrets.””

My son reached for the medical documents.

“No more protecting adults from consequences.””

Daniel looked at him.

And I saw something in Ethan’s face.

Not hatred.

Determination.

“Call her.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Call Sarah.””

Daniel looked around.

Everyone was waiting.

Finally, slowly, he picked up his phone.

His fingers trembled.

He found the number.

Pressed call.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then someone answered.

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel?””

Everyone heard it.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Sarah.””

A pause.

Then she asked:

“Did you finally tell him?””

Ethan looked at his father.

My heart stopped.

Because Sarah wasn’t asking what happened.

She already knew.

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Sarah said something that changed the entire room.

“Then he needs to know the truth about what happened after he was born.””

Ethan leaned forward.

“What truth?””

The voice on the phone became quiet.

And then Sarah said:

“The truth is… Daniel didn’t just hide information from you.””

A pause.

“He made a decision.””

Daniel’s face turned pale.

Ethan stared at him.

“What decision?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Sarah finished the sentence.

“The decision that almost kept you from ever knowing your mother loved you.””

The phone went silent.

And Daniel whispered:

“Sarah, don’t.””

But it was already too late.

May you like

Because Ethan had heard every word.

And now he wanted the final truth.
