Chapter 5: The Money in My Husband's Account

I returned to Robert's office so quickly that I barely remembered the drive.

Daniel was waiting beside the conference table, his face pale and his tie hanging loose around his neck.

He stood when I entered.

"Sarah, I can explain.""

I dropped my purse onto the nearest chair.

"Then explain why three hundred thousand dollars from a fraudulent loan ended up in your personal account.""

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Robert closed the office door.

"Daniel, the lender's preliminary report shows that the funds were transferred yesterday afternoon. The account is in your name.""

"I didn't withdraw anything.""

"Did you authorize the transfer?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I authorized a deposit.""

I stared at him.

"A deposit of three hundred thousand dollars?""

"Vanessa said it was temporary.""

"Why?""

"She told me Olivia needed to settle an urgent debt before the wedding.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Did you know where the money came from?""

"No. She said it was a private loan.""

"Secured against my property.""

"I didn't know that part.""

Robert leaned forward.

"Daniel, your signature appears on the guarantee documents. The lender relied on your representation that the property owner had approved the transaction.""

Daniel gripped the back of his chair.

"I never said Sarah signed anything.""

"You signed a document stating that the necessary consent had been obtained.""

"I thought it had!""

I looked at my husband.

"Did you ever ask me?""

He shook his head.

"Did you ever show me the documents?""

"No.""

"Then what exactly did you think?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"I thought you trusted me.""

The words struck me with such force that I couldn't speak for a moment.

Then I laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"You used my trust as a substitute for my consent.""

Daniel covered his face.

"I know.""

"No. You know that you're in trouble. I'm not sure you understand what you've done.""

Robert opened a new file.

"There's another issue. The lender is claiming that the transfer was part of a coordinated arrangement involving the property trust, the condo, and the personal account. If we can't establish the chain of events, they may attempt to pursue the collateral while the investigation continues.""

I sat down.

"Can they take Lakeview?""

"We're seeking an immediate injunction. The fact that the consent appears fraudulent is important, but we need to preserve the evidence and act quickly.""

"Do whatever you need to do.""

Robert nodded.

"I'll also have the lender identify every account that received funds. We need to know whether the money is still there.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Sarah, I swear I haven't spent it.""

"Then where is it?""

He swallowed.

"I transferred it.""

"To whom?""

"Vanessa.""

For several seconds, I heard nothing but the hum of the air conditioner.

"You transferred three hundred thousand dollars to Vanessa?""

"She said she would pay Olivia's creditors directly.""

"Did she?""

"I don't know.""

I stood so abruptly that my chair scraped against the floor.

"How can you not know?""

"I was trying to keep Olivia from losing everything!""

"And you were willing to risk my father's legacy to do it?""

Daniel's voice rose.

"She's my daughter!""

"And I'm your wife!""

The words echoed through the office.

He went silent.

I had never shouted at him like that before.

Not when Vanessa insulted me at our anniversary dinner. Not when Olivia demanded that Daniel spend Christmas with her instead of us. Not even when he told me that I should be more understanding because his daughter had suffered through her parents' divorce.

I had always lowered my voice.

I had always tried to be the reasonable one.

I was tired of being reasonable while everyone else treated my life like an account they could draw from whenever they pleased.

Robert stepped between us verbally, his voice firm.

"Both of you need to understand that this is no longer a family disagreement. We are dealing with suspected financial fraud. Daniel, do not transfer any more money.

Do not delete messages. Do not contact the lender privately. Sarah, I recommend that you secure all remaining assets and communicate through counsel.""

I nodded.

Daniel looked at Robert.

"Can we keep this out of the police?""

"That decision may not be entirely yours.""

"But if Olivia is implicated, she'll be arrested.""

Robert's expression remained neutral.

"If the evidence establishes criminal conduct, the authorities will decide what action is appropriate.""

Daniel sank into his chair.

I watched him for a moment.

Then I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Did Olivia know the money would go through your account?""

He looked at me.

"I don't know.""

"Did Vanessa tell you to receive it?""

"Yes.""

"Did she tell you to send it to her?""

"Yes.""

"And you never wondered why?""

His eyes filled again.

"She said Olivia was desperate.""

I walked to the window.

Outside, people hurried along the sidewalk, carrying coffee and talking into their phones. Their lives continued as though mine hadn't just split in two.

My father used to tell me that money revealed character.

I had always thought he meant greed.

Now I understood that money also revealed the stories people told themselves to justify what they wanted.

Daniel hadn't thought of himself as a thief.

He had thought of himself as a father.

Vanessa probably thought of herself as a mother protecting her child.

And Olivia?

I didn't know what Olivia thought anymore.

My phone vibrated.

An incoming call from Olivia.

I declined it.

Seconds later, a message appeared.

*Dad says you're trying to destroy us. Please, Sarah. We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed one sentence.

*Tell me where the $300,000 went.*

The reply came almost immediately.

*What money?*

I showed Robert.

He read the message and raised his eyebrows.

"That isn't helpful.""

"No," I said.

"But it's revealing.""

I typed again.

*The money transferred from the loan secured against Lakeview. The money that went through Daniel's account and into Vanessa's. Where is it?*

This time, Olivia didn't respond.

Instead, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered and put her on speaker.

"Sarah," she said, her voice coated in false warmth.

"I think there's been a terrible misunderstanding.""

"Where is the money, Vanessa?""

Silence.

Then a sigh.

"Daniel was helping his daughter.""

"With money obtained through a loan against property he doesn't own?""

"Nobody was trying to steal anything.""

"Then why did you hide the documents?""

"Because you make everything difficult.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth, delivered without shame.

Vanessa continued.

"You've always needed to control every decision. Every dollar. Every little thing. Olivia was drowning, and you would have made her beg for help.""

"She could have asked me.""

"She was embarrassed.""

"So you forged my signature?""

"I did not forge anything.""

"Then explain the document.""

"I won't discuss legal matters over the phone.""

"Of course you won't.""

Her voice hardened.

"Listen carefully, Sarah. Olivia is Daniel's daughter. She will always come first.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the floor.

"Then perhaps you should have asked Daniel to pay for her future with his own money," I said.

"Not mine.""

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"You have enough to spare.""

"That was never your decision.""

I ended the call.

Robert immediately made a note of the time and summarized the conversation for the case file.

Daniel stood.

"I need to talk to Olivia.""

"No," Robert said.

"Not until we've established what happened to the funds.""

Daniel looked at me.

"She's my daughter, Sarah.""

I picked up my purse.

"And I'm done paying for the choices she makes.""

I walked toward the door.

"Sarah, wait.""

I stopped but didn't turn.

Daniel's voice broke.

"Are you leaving me?""

The question hung between us.

Twelve years earlier, I had stood in the same room where Daniel proposed, laughing because he had dropped the ring box beneath a restaurant table.

He had told me he wanted a marriage built on honesty.

I had believed him.

Now I could barely recognize the man standing behind me.

"I'm not making that decision today," I said.

"But I am making another one.""

I turned.

"From this moment on, you will not have access to my accounts, my properties, or my company. Robert will handle the necessary notices.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"You can't just cut me off.""

"I can protect what belongs to me.""

"But we're married.""

"Marriage is not permission to commit me to debts I never approved.""

I left him standing beside the conference table.

That afternoon, Robert's office received confirmation from the bank.

The three hundred thousand dollars had not gone directly to Vanessa.

It had been split into four transfers.

One went to a private creditor.

One went to a company called Cole Financial Services.

A third went to an account in Olivia's name.

The fourth had been withdrawn in cash.

Robert placed the report in front of me.

"The account receiving the largest payment is associated with a private lending company. We're trying to determine whether the company is legitimate and whether it is connected to the original loan.""

I examined the figures.

"How much went to Olivia?""

"Seventy-five thousand dollars.""

"And the cash withdrawal?""

"Fifty thousand.""

I looked up.

"Who withdrew it?""

"The bank's records show that the withdrawal was made in person. We're requesting the supporting documentation.""

I felt a headache forming behind my eyes.

"Why would someone withdraw fifty thousand dollars in cash?""

Robert didn't answer immediately.

"Sometimes people do that to avoid creating a clear electronic trail.""

I stared at the report.

Then I noticed the date.

The cash withdrawal had occurred the morning before the wedding.

I remembered Olivia's face when I threatened to cancel the property transfer.

Her sudden panic.

Her demand that I stop embarrassing her.

Her confidence that I would never do anything.

I picked up my phone and opened Ethan's messages.

I typed:

*Did Olivia mention a cash payment before the wedding?*

His response came five minutes later.

*Yes. She said she had to pay someone before Monday. She told me it was handled.*

I forwarded the message to Robert.

Then another notification appeared.

It was an email from the hotel.

The subject line read:

*Incident Report and Security Footage Preservation.*

I opened it.

The hotel manager had written that several guests had submitted recordings of the altercation. The hotel had also preserved the ballroom's security footage after being informed of a potential legal dispute.

I scrolled through the attachments.

One still image showed Olivia standing near the family table, her hand raised.

Another showed Vanessa speaking to a man near the service entrance approximately twenty minutes before the slap.

I enlarged the image.

The man wore a dark suit and carried a leather folder.

His face was partially turned toward the camera.

I didn't recognize him.

But the folder did.

It was the same brown leather folder shown in the photograph Ethan had sent me.

The one beside the $1.2 million authorization.

I called Robert.

"Have the hotel identify the man in this image. I want his name, his arrival time, and any record of who he met.""

"Why?""

"Because I think he was at the wedding for something other than celebrating.""

Robert examined the photograph.

Then he looked at me.

"Sarah, I recognize him.""

My heart began to pound.

"Who is he?""

Robert turned his laptop toward me.

On the screen was a corporate registration record for Cole Financial Services.

The company's listed director was a man named Marcus Cole.

May you like

And according to the document, Marcus Cole was not just Olivia's private lender.

He was also a former business partner of my late father.
