Chapter 9: The Woman My Mother Never Stopped Loving

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Rebecca Shaw was standing outside my parents' house.
The same woman who had appeared in the security footage beside Ethan Whitmore.
The same woman who had supposedly disappeared from corporate life eleven months earlier.
And the woman my mother had identified as her niece.
My father looked at the security officer.
"Are they armed?""
"No, sir. But Mrs. Whitmore is demanding to speak with you.""
"Bring them to the front entrance. Keep everyone else outside.""
The officer nodded.
I looked at Laura.
"What do we do?""
She glanced toward Grace.
"First, we make sure the baby is somewhere safe.""
My father immediately agreed.
"Take Grace upstairs with the nanny.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Nia.""
"I'm not handing my daughter to anyone while strangers are standing outside our house.""
Richard looked at me.
"They aren't getting near her.""
"Then I want to stay here.""
He studied my face.
Finally, he nodded.
"All right. But you stay beside me.""
We moved into the main reception room.
A few minutes later, the front door opened.
Diane entered first.
Her fuchsia dress had been replaced by a black designer suit.
Her hair was immaculate.
Her handbag looked expensive enough to pay someone's annual salary.
But her confidence had changed.
She wasn't smiling anymore.
Rebecca followed her.
She wore a simple gray coat.
Her dark hair was tied back.
Her face was pale.
And when she looked at the photograph of my mother displayed on the wall, her eyes immediately filled with tears.
Richard stood.
"Why are you here?""
Diane took a step forward.
"Richard, we need to resolve this situation before it becomes any more damaging.""
He didn't move.
"You assaulted my daughter, participated in an attempt to interfere with her inheritance, and helped your husband file a fraudulent legal claim.""
Diane lifted her chin.
"Those are serious accusations.""
"They're also supported by evidence.""
She glanced at Rebecca.
"Perhaps we should discuss the matter privately.""
"No.""
Richard pointed toward the sofa.
"You will sit down and explain why you are here.""
Diane hesitated.
Then she sat.
Rebecca remained standing.
I looked at her.
"Are you Rebecca Shaw?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did you know my mother?""
Rebecca's lips trembled.
"Yes.""
"Who were you to her?""
She looked toward the photograph.
Then whispered:
"She was the closest thing I ever had to a mother.""
My father stared at her.
"Then why have you been helping Ethan Whitmore?""
Rebecca looked down.
"I wasn't helping him.""
Diane laughed sharply.
"Oh, please.""
Rebecca turned toward her.
"Don't.""
Diane folded her arms.
"You're the one who brought the documents.""
"I brought the documents to expose what you were doing.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Explain.""
Rebecca took a breath.
"My name wasn't always Rebecca Shaw.""
She looked at my father.
"My birth name was Charlotte Bennett.""
The room became completely silent.
Richard's face lost its color.
"Charlotte?""
She nodded.
"Elizabeth Bennett's daughter.""
My father slowly sat down.
I looked at Rebecca.
She was my cousin.
A cousin my mother had known.
A cousin my mother had searched for.
And now she was standing in front of us, looking like someone who had spent a lifetime waiting for a family that never came.
"Why didn't you tell us?"" I asked.
Rebecca's eyes filled.
"Because I was afraid you would reject me.""
"Why would we?""
She looked at Diane.
"Because I was told your family considered me illegitimate. I was told your grandfather had erased my mother's name because she was unstable and dishonest.""
My father shook his head.
"That isn't true.""
"I know that now.""
Rebecca reached into her handbag.
She removed an old photograph.
It showed a younger woman holding two babies.
Elizabeth.
Thomas.
And Charlotte.
She placed it on the table.
"I found this in my mother's belongings after she died.""
My father stared at the photograph.
His hands trembled.
"That's my sister.""
Rebecca nodded.
"She died believing nobody in the family wanted her.""
My father closed his eyes.
For a moment, I thought he might cry.
Then Rebecca turned toward me.
"Your mother found me four years ago. She told me everything.""
"Why didn't you contact us?""
"She asked me not to.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
"Because she was investigating the financial arrangements involving the original trust. She believed someone inside the company was still using your grandfather's old accounts to move money.""
Laura stepped forward.
"Who?""
Rebecca looked at Diane.
"Her husband.""
Diane immediately stood.
"This is absurd.""
Rebecca ignored her.
"Ethan has been moving money through shell companies for years. He used the hospitality group to conceal payments to private investors.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Do you have proof?""
Rebecca nodded.
"I do.""
She opened a folder and removed several bank statements.
"These are transfers from three corporate accounts. Each payment was authorized through an executive access code.""
Laura examined them.
"These account numbers...""
She looked at Richard.
"They belong to the family trust.""
My father took the papers.
"How much?""
Rebecca pointed toward the last page.
"Approximately eighteen million dollars over four years.""
My father stared.
"Ethan stole eighteen million?""
"Not all of it was taken directly. Some money was transferred into investment vehicles. Some was used to purchase shares through third parties.""
Laura looked horrified.
"That's why he was trying to acquire control. He needed access to the remaining assets before the audit exposed the transfers.""
Rebecca nodded.
"Exactly.""
Diane suddenly laughed.
"You expect us to believe all this because you have a few bank statements?""
Rebecca turned toward her.
"I have more than bank statements.""
She removed a small flash drive.
"These contain recordings of Ethan discussing the transfers. I also have copies of the original trust documents.""
Richard extended his hand.
"Give them to Laura.""
Rebecca hesitated.
"Not yet.""
My father frowned.
"Why?""
"Because there's one thing you need to understand first.""
She looked at me.
"Your mother didn't just leave me those documents. She left me instructions.""
"What instructions?""
Rebecca swallowed.
"She told me that if Grace was ever threatened, I should reveal the truth about her father.""
My stomach tightened.
"Grace's father?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Not Daniel Cross.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
She looked directly into my eyes.
"Your mother knew Daniel was going to disappear before you even got engaged.""
I felt the room spin.
"How could she know that?""
"Because she discovered that Daniel had been approached by Ethan Whitmore.""
I looked at my father.
He seemed equally stunned.
Rebecca continued.
"Your mother also discovered that Ethan had been arranging marriages and relationships between wealthy families to gain influence over their assets.""
I shook my head.
"That doesn't explain Grace's father.""
Rebecca took another document from the folder.
It was a DNA report.
I stared at it.
"What is that?""
"A private genetic test.""
My father stepped forward.
"Whose?""
Rebecca looked toward the door.
"Thomas Bennett's.""
I froze.
"Thomas?""
She nodded.
"He returned to the country six months ago. He's been trying to reach Richard ever since.""
My father looked stunned.
"Why didn't he contact me directly?""
"Because Ethan's people were monitoring his communications.""
Rebecca turned toward me.
"Thomas is alive. And he knows who Grace's biological father is.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Who?""
Rebecca hesitated.
Then she said:
"Your mother knew Daniel wasn't the only man in your life when Grace was conceived.""
I stared at her.
"That's not possible.""
Rebecca looked down.
"There's something you don't remember, Nia. Something that happened during the final months before your engagement ended.""
I searched my memory.
Daniel.
Our apartment.
The engagement party.
The night he disappeared.
Nothing made sense.
Rebecca continued.
"You were involved in an accident two years ago. You were taken to the hospital unconscious. Your mother arranged for a specialist to treat you.""
I remembered the accident.
A rainy evening.
A car crossing an intersection.
The impact.
Then waking up in a hospital room.
I had been told I suffered a concussion and had no serious injuries.
"What does that have to do with Grace?""
Rebecca looked at me.
"Because the man who brought you to the hospital was Thomas Bennett's son.""
I stared.
"Who?""
"His name is Alexander.""
My father frowned.
"Elizabeth never mentioned another son.""
"Because he was born after Thomas disappeared.""
Rebecca took a breath.
"Alexander was adopted by another family. He grew up without knowing his biological parents. Your mother found him shortly before she died.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"You're saying I met him?""
Rebecca nodded.
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"I don't remember.""
"Your mother said you were unconscious for part of that evening. But she also said you met him again after you recovered.""
I stared at the photograph of my mother.
Something began coming back.
A hospital corridor.
A man holding a paper cup.
A quiet voice asking whether I needed anything.
A pair of warm brown eyes.
And a name.
Alex.
I covered my mouth.
"Alex was there?""
Rebecca nodded.
"He was.""
My father looked between us.
"Are you saying this man is Grace's biological father?""
Rebecca didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she placed another document on the table.
It was a certified DNA report.
The names were clearly printed.
*Alexander Bennett.*
*Grace Bennett.*
Probability of biological paternity: 99.99%.
My breath caught.
I looked at the document.
Then at Rebecca.
Then at my father.
"How is this possible?""
Rebecca's voice softened.
"Because Alexander was the man you fell in love with before Daniel Cross.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Your mother knew.""
"No.""
"She wanted to tell you.""
I stepped backward.
I remembered a summer evening.
A man laughing beside the lake.
A conversation about books.
A promise to meet again.
Then a sudden family emergency.
A long absence.
And eventually, Daniel.
I had buried those memories so deeply that I had convinced myself they were dreams.
My father looked at me.
"Nia, do you remember him?""
I couldn't answer.
Rebecca continued.
"Alexander left because he discovered that Ethan was investigating his biological family. He believed staying near you would put you in danger.""
I looked down at Grace.
Her tiny face looked peaceful.
The world around me seemed to be collapsing.
Then Rebecca said the words that changed everything.
"Alexander is alive, Nia.""
My heart stopped.
"Where?""
She glanced toward the front entrance.
"He's downstairs.""
Before anyone could respond, the doorbell rang.
A security officer entered.
"Mr. Bennett, there's a man outside asking to see Ms. Nia Bennett.""
My father looked toward me.
"Who?""
The officer checked his phone.
Then answered:
"Alexander Bennett.""
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
Two years of unanswered questions.
Two years of believing I had been abandoned.
And now the man whose name appeared on my daughter's DNA report was standing outside my parents' house.
Richard looked at me.
"Do you want to see him?""
I looked down at Grace.
Then nodded.
"Yes.""
The door opened.
A tall man stepped inside.
Dark brown hair.
Broad shoulders.
A faint scar above his left eyebrow.
And the same warm brown eyes I remembered from the hospital corridor.
He looked at me.
Then at the baby in my arms.
His expression crumbled.
"Nia.""
I couldn't speak.
He took one careful step forward.
"I know you probably hate me.""
My eyes filled.
"Why did you leave?""
He looked at Grace.
Then whispered:
"Because your mother asked me to protect you from a man who was willing to destroy both our families.""
He swallowed.
"And because I was afraid that if I stayed, Ethan Whitmore would find out that I was the missing heir.""
Richard stood.
"Alexander, before you say anything else, I want the truth.""
Alexander nodded.
Then he reached into his jacket and placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"The truth is in here.""
My father opened it.
Inside was a letter bearing my mother's signature.
But the final paragraph wasn't addressed to Richard.
It was addressed to me.
My darling Nia,
If Alexander has finally returned, then the time has come for you to learn why I kept him away.
He is not simply the father of your child.
He is the only person who can expose what your grandfather did before his death.
My father looked up.
Alexander's expression became grave.
May you like
And then he said:
"Your grandfather didn't build the empire alone. He stole it from Elizabeth.""
