Chapter 5: The Heir Who Disappeared

My father sat motionless.

The message remained open on my phone.

*Ask him what happened to the previous Bennett heir.*

I looked from Richard to Laura.

"What previous heir?""

My father rubbed his hands together.

For the first time in my life, he looked like a man who didn't know how to explain something to his own daughter.

"Nia, there are things about our family that I should have told you years ago.""

"Then tell me now.""

He glanced at Grace.

"Not everything is appropriate to discuss in front of her.""

I almost laughed.

"She's three weeks old, Daddy. I think she'll survive hearing a family secret.""

Laura pulled a chair closer.

"Perhaps we should begin with your grandmother.""

I frowned.

"My grandmother?""

"Your father's older sister. Elizabeth Bennett.""

I shook my head.

"I've never heard of her.""

"That's because the family rarely speaks about her.""

My father looked down.

"Elizabeth was my sister. She was six years older than me.""

"What happened to her?""

"She disappeared.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"She left home when I was twenty-two. Nobody knew where she went.""

"Did she die?""

"We never found out.""

I felt a strange pressure building in my chest.

"Then what does she have to do with Grace?""

Laura opened her folder again.

"Elizabeth had a son.""

My father closed his eyes.

"His name was Thomas.""

The name sounded unfamiliar.

"Was he your cousin?""

"Yes.""

"Where is he?""

My father took a slow breath.

"We don't know.""

I looked between them.

"You're telling me that our family has an entire missing branch?""

Laura nodded.

"Thomas was originally named as the primary beneficiary under the first version of the Bennett Family Legacy Trust.""

I blinked.

"Then why did Grace inherit the voting rights?""

"Because the original beneficiary died or was legally presumed deceased without leaving a recognized successor.""

My father interrupted.

"We never proved he was dead.""

Laura looked at him.

"Richard.""

He shook his head.

"We searched for years.""

I felt dizzy.

"Wait. If Thomas was the original heir, why did nobody tell me?""

"Because your grandfather believed Elizabeth had betrayed the family," Richard explained.

"He removed her from the family records and raised me as his only successor.""

"Why?""

My father stared at the floor.

"She married someone he considered unsuitable. A man without wealth or influence. When she refused to end the relationship, he cut her off.""

I thought about my mother.

She had always believed love mattered more than status.

Perhaps that was why she had never spoken badly about my grandfather.

"What happened to Thomas?""

Richard shook his head.

"We lost contact when he was a child.""

Laura quietly added, "But there is something else.""

She opened a sealed envelope.

"Three months ago, someone requested access to the original trust documents.""

My father looked up sharply.

"Who?""

"The request came through an attorney representing an individual named Thomas Bennett.""

My heart stopped.

"He's alive?""

"We haven't confirmed his identity.""

"Then why did you say he was presumed dead?""

"Because that was his legal status under the original succession documents.""

My father stared at the envelope.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I was waiting for verification.""

"Laura, this could change everything.""

"I know.""

I looked at them.

"Could Thomas claim Grace's inheritance?""

Laura shook her head.

"Not automatically. The current trust documents give Grace protected beneficiary status. But if Thomas is alive and can establish his identity, he may have rights under an earlier family agreement.""

I held Grace closer.

"So Ethan Whitmore knows about him?""

"Possibly.""

My father walked toward the window.

"That would explain the sudden urgency.""

"Explain what?"" I asked.

"Why Ethan is so desperate to gain control now.""

Laura took a breath.

"If Thomas reappears, the original trust structure may need to be reviewed. Ethan could attempt to exploit the uncertainty.""

I looked at the message again.

Someone knew about Thomas.

Someone knew I didn't.

And someone wanted me frightened enough to leave.

"Who sent this?""

Laura examined the number.

"We'll trace it.""

My father returned to the table.

"Until we know who's behind this, Nia, I want you and Grace protected.""

"Daddy, I don't want bodyguards following me everywhere.""

"This isn't a negotiation.""

"I have a daughter now. I can't live like I'm hiding from everyone.""

He softened.

"I understand.""

Then he looked at Laura.

"Arrange discreet security. Two people, no uniforms. Nobody approaches Nia without her permission.""

Laura nodded.

"Done.""

A knock interrupted us.

Daniel Foster, the security director, entered.

"Mr. Bennett, we've reviewed the lobby footage.""

Richard gestured toward the screen on the wall.

"Show me.""

Daniel connected his tablet.

The video began.

I watched myself entering the lobby.

My beige blouse.

My old shoulder bag.

Grace's white blanket.

Then Diane appeared.

She walked toward me with a smile.

But before she approached, she stopped beside Marcus.

The two spoke for several seconds.

Daniel paused the footage.

"Listen to this section.""

He increased the volume.

Diane's voice came through.

"That's her. The Bennett girl.""

Marcus replied, "Are you certain?""

"Yes. The child is with her.""

"What do you want me to do?""

"Keep her away from the executive floor.""

My stomach dropped.

Daniel continued the footage.

Marcus looked toward the reception desk.

"But the reservation is confirmed.""

Diane answered sharply.

"Then find a reason to cancel it.""

The video continued.

I watched Diane approach me.

I watched her strike me.

And I watched Marcus do nothing.

My father gripped the edge of the table.

"Stop.""

Daniel paused.

Richard looked at him.

"Go back to the conversation before she approached my daughter.""

Daniel did.

This time, he slowed the footage.

A third person appeared in the background.

A man standing near the private elevators.

He was holding a black folder.

Daniel zoomed in.

I leaned closer.

The man turned slightly.

His face became visible.

I recognized him immediately.

"That's Ethan Whitmore.""

My father nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel continued.

"Ethan entered the hotel at 1:42 p.m. He left approximately twelve minutes later.""

"Did he speak to Diane?"" Richard asked.

"Yes. They met near the private entrance.""

"Do we have audio?""

"Unfortunately, not from that camera.""

Richard looked at Laura.

"I want his access records.""

Laura nodded.

"Already requested.""

Daniel hesitated.

"There's another detail.""

My father looked at him.

"Go on.""

"Mr. Whitmore didn't leave alone.""

Daniel switched to another camera.

A woman entered the frame.

She wore a dark coat and carried a small handbag.

She approached Ethan.

He handed her the black folder.

Then she looked toward the lobby.

Toward the reception desk.

Toward me.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Who is she?""

Daniel enlarged the image.

"Her name is Rebecca Shaw. She's a former corporate compliance officer.""

Laura stiffened.

"That's impossible.""

Richard turned.

"Why?""

"Rebecca resigned eleven months ago after an internal investigation.""

"An investigation into what?""

Laura looked at my father.

"Financial irregularities involving the family trust.""

Silence filled the room.

I looked at the photograph again.

Rebecca's face was familiar.

Not because I had met her.

But because I remembered seeing it in an old photograph at my father's house.

"Wait.""

Everyone turned toward me.

"I've seen her before.""

My father frowned.

"Where?""

"At Mom's memorial service.""

He stared at me.

"What?""

"She was standing near the back. I remember because she came up to me afterward and said she had worked with Mom.""

Laura slowly lowered the folder.

"That makes sense.""

"How?""

"Your mother was involved in the original trust review before she died.""

I looked at my father.

"Was Rebecca close to Mom?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he asked Daniel to pause the footage.

Then he zoomed in on Rebecca's handbag.

A small gold emblem was attached to its clasp.

A symbol I recognized from the envelope containing my mother's old estate documents.

The Bennett family crest.

My father leaned closer.

"That's my wife's personal crest.""

Laura's expression changed.

"Richard, are you thinking what I'm thinking?""

He nodded slowly.

"Someone gave Rebecca access to your mother's private archive.""

I felt cold.

"Why would Mom's documents be with her?""

My father looked at me.

"Because after your mother died, I entrusted Rebecca with certain records.""

"Which records?""

He looked toward Grace.

"The original birth and succession documents.""

I stared at him.

"Grace's?""

He nodded.

"Not just Grace's.""

He turned toward Laura.

"Find out whether Rebecca has contacted anyone claiming to be Thomas Bennett.""

Laura was already reaching for her phone.

Then Daniel's radio crackled.

A security officer spoke urgently.

"Mr. Foster, we have an issue at the main entrance.""

Daniel answered.

"What issue?""

"There's a man downstairs asking for Richard Bennett.""

"Does he have an appointment?""

"No, sir.""

"What's his name?""

A pause.

Then the officer answered.

"He says his name is Thomas Bennett.""

Nobody moved.

May you like

My father slowly looked toward the elevator.

And for the first time that afternoon, he seemed genuinely afraid of what might happen next.
