Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Daniel’s Silence

The room was silent.

Not peaceful.

Not empty.

A silence filled with disbelief.

The kind that comes when reality changes faster than the mind can accept it.

Clara stared at the frozen image on the laptop screen.

Daniel.

Younger.

Standing in the room with her mother.

The same Daniel who had guided her through the mystery.

The same Daniel who had defended her.

The same Daniel who had acted shocked at every revelation.

The man she thought was helping her uncover the truth.

Was there when the nightmare began.

“No.””

The word escaped her before she realized she had spoken.

Daniel did not move.

He looked at the screen.

Then at Clara.

His face had lost all color.

“Clara…”

She stepped away.

“Don’t.””

His voice broke.

“Please.””

“No.””

Her eyes burned.

“Not that word.””

Daniel swallowed.

“You don’t understand what you saw.””

Clara laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“I’m getting tired of hearing that.””

Margaret moved closer.

“Clara, listen to him.””

She turned.

“You knew?””

Margaret froze.

That hesitation was enough.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“Then why did you look at him like you already knew what was coming?””

Margaret looked at Daniel.

Then away.

“Because I knew he was hiding something.””

Clara looked back at Daniel.

“Were you?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The silence was worse than a confession.

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.””

The room seemed to shrink.

Clara stared.

“Yes?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I was there that night.””

Her chest tightened.

“My mother’s disappearance.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Because I was trying to stop it.””

Clara almost smiled.

“Stop it?””

She pointed at the laptop.

“You were standing right there.””

“Yes.””

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Daniel looked up.

“I was warning her.””

Clara stared.

“About what?””

“About Richard.””

The name hung in the air.

Daniel walked toward the laptop.

“I knew Richard was planning something.””

He pointed at the screen.

“That recording was taken from a hidden camera.””

“Your camera?””

“No.””

“Then whose?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Mine.””

Nobody spoke.

Clara’s anger returned.

“You recorded my mother?””

“I was trying to collect evidence.””

“By spying on her?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to save her.””

Clara looked at the video.

“Then why did you look like the person threatening her?””

Daniel had no answer.

Finally, he said:

“Because she didn’t trust me.””

Margaret looked at him.

“She had a reason.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Clara noticed something.

Not anger.

Not defensiveness.

Regret.

Deep regret.

“What happened after that video?””

Daniel sat down.

The strength seemed to leave him.

“After that conversation, Isabella disappeared.””

“And you did nothing?””

“I searched for her.””

“For how long?””

“Years.””

Clara looked at him.

“Then why did you let everyone believe she was dead?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.

“Because Richard made sure nobody would believe otherwise.””

“How?””

“He used my own actions against me.””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“After Isabella vanished, Richard showed everyone pieces of that recording.””

“Pieces?””

“Yes.””

“Edited pieces.””

Clara understood.

“He made it look like you were threatening her.””

Daniel nodded.

“He wanted me blamed.””

“Why?””

“Because I was the only person who knew what he was planning.””

“And because you were family.””

“Yes.””

Clara looked at the screen.

“But you still knew where the necklace was.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her heart sank.

“You knew about me.””

“I knew Isabella had a daughter.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Daniel looked away.

“I knew you were alive.””

The words hurt.

More than she expected.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you never found me?””

“I tried.””

“Try harder.””

The room went silent.

Daniel accepted the accusation.

“I should have.””

That answer stopped her.

Because she expected excuses.

Not guilt.

“I spent twenty years thinking nobody wanted me.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I wanted to find you.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I failed.””

For a moment, Clara saw something different.

Not the wealthy man.

Not the Whitmore heir.

A person carrying a mistake too heavy to escape.

But she was still hurt.

Still angry.

She looked at Margaret.

“Why did you bring me here?””

Margaret answered quietly.

“Because the memory card was finally found.””

“No.””

Clara shook her head.

“That’s not enough.””

Margaret looked down.

“You’re right.””

“Why now?””

A long silence.

Then Margaret said:

“Because Richard is dying.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Margaret nodded.

“He contacted me months ago.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to confess.””

Clara laughed bitterly.

“People always confess when they have nothing left to lose.””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

That was when Clara knew.

Someone knew.

Daniel.

She looked at him.

“You know.””

Daniel looked away.

“Where is Richard?””

“He’s gone.””

“Gone where?””

“He disappeared after contacting me.””

Clara stepped closer.

“Like everyone else.””

Daniel didn’t respond.

The frustration inside her reached its limit.

“So what now?””

Nobody answered.

The laptop suddenly made a sound.

A notification.

Everyone turned.

The video screen changed.

A new file appeared.

Nobody had opened it.

The title was simple.

*THE FINAL TRUTH*

Margaret whispered:

“No.””

Clara looked at her.

“What?””

Margaret’s face was terrified.

“Isabella never made that file.””

Daniel stood.

“Then who did?””

The screen opened automatically.

A black background appeared.

Then a voice.

Not Isabella’s.

Not Richard’s.

A voice Clara recognized.

A voice that made her blood run cold.

Her own.

The recording began.

“Clara, if you’re watching this, it means I couldn’t stop them.””

Everyone froze.

Clara stared.

“That’s me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“I know this sounds impossible.””

The screen showed a video.

Clara.

Not the Clara standing in the room.

Another Clara.

Older.

Different.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Recording herself.

“I don’t have much time.””

Clara backed away.

“No.””

Margaret looked horrified.

“That’s impossible.””

The video Clara continued.

“The person you’re searching for isn’t Richard.””

A pause.

“It isn’t Daniel.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

The woman continued:

“And it isn’t Eleanor.””

Clara felt dizzy.

“Then who?””

The recording Clara looked directly into the camera.

Like she was looking into the future.

“Your biggest mistake will be believing this story is about your family.””

The screen flickered.

“It was never about the Whitmores.””

A pause.

“It was about you.””

Clara’s breath stopped.

Then the final sentence appeared.

Not spoken.

Written.

A message on the screen.

*Chapter One was never the beginning.*

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Because underneath the message…

A date appeared.

A date twenty years in the future.

May you like

And Clara realized the impossible truth.

The recording had been made tomorrow.
