Thinking

Chapter 4: The Daughter They Wanted to Erase

The sound of police boots against the marble floor echoed through the Ashford estate.

Each step felt like a countdown.

Clara stood frozen beside the dining table, her fingers wrapped around the silver moon necklace.

She looked younger than she was.

Not because of her face.

Because of the fear in her eyes.

The kind of fear that belonged to someone who had spent a lifetime being told they didn’t belong anywhere.

I moved in front of her without thinking.

“No one is taking her.””

My father looked at me sharply.

“Elizabeth.””

I didn’t look away.

“No.””

The word surprised even me.

For years, I had been the daughter who listened.

The daughter who trusted.

The daughter who believed my father always knew what was best.

But that woman disappeared the moment Clara walked through those doors.

The moment I saw the proof that my child had been alive all along.

The dining room doors opened.

Two police officers entered, followed by a man in a dark suit carrying a folder.

“Mrs. Elizabeth Ashford?””

I stepped forward.

“Yes.””

The man showed his badge.

“I’m Detective Marcus Hale.””

His eyes moved toward Clara.

“Is that Clara Bell?””

Clara flinched at her name.

I noticed.

Not Clara Ashford.

Clara Bell.

The name someone else had given her.

“Yes,” I said carefully.

The detective opened his folder.

“We need to speak with her.””

“Why?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Because there is evidence connecting her to a decades-old kidnapping case.””

The room went silent.

Clara stared at him.

“Kidnapping?””

The detective nodded.

“She is a person of interest.””

I laughed once.

A sharp, angry sound.

“She was kidnapped.””

The detective looked at me.

“That is one possibility.””

“One possibility?””

My voice rose.

“She was a baby.””

“Yes, Mrs. Ashford.””

“Then how could she possibly be responsible?””

He looked at Clara.

“We are not saying she planned anything.””

“Then why are you here?””

He hesitated.

“Because someone reported that the missing Ashford child had returned.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who reported it?””

The detective glanced down at his notes.

Then back at me.

“Your husband.””

The world seemed to stop.

I turned slowly.

Daniel was standing near the fireplace.

Pale.

Silent.

But not surprised.

“You.””

His face changed.

“Elizabeth—”

“You called them?””

“I was trying to help.””

“Help?””

I walked toward him.

“You reported my daughter?””

He shook his head.

“No. I reported the situation.””

“That’s not an answer.””

His eyes hardened slightly.

“You don’t know what’s happening here.””

I stared at him.

“I know exactly what’s happening.””

“No, you don’t.””

The detective stepped between us.

“Everyone needs to calm down.””

I almost laughed.

Calm.

That word had become meaningless.

My daughter had appeared after twenty-six years.

My father had hidden secrets.

My husband had called the police.

And now a detective was standing in my dining room suggesting I calm down.

Clara suddenly spoke.

“Why would he report me?””

Everyone looked at her.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Clara—”

“No.””

Her voice was stronger than before.

“Why?””

Daniel looked away.

The detective watched him closely.

“That’s a good question.””

My stomach tightened.

“Detective, what exactly is happening?””

He opened the folder.

“Three days ago, we received anonymous documents.””

“What documents?””

“Records.””

“Of what?””

He looked at Clara.

“Of a woman named Margaret Bell.””

Clara’s face went pale.

The detective continued.

“Margaret Bell was connected to a child disappearance investigation twenty-six years ago.””

I looked at Clara.

She looked like she couldn’t breathe.

“But she raised me.””

The detective softened his voice.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

Clara shook her head.

“She was my mother.””

The detective nodded.

“And that is why this is complicated.””

My father stepped forward.

“Detective, you need to leave.””

Everyone turned.

The detective looked at him.

“Mr. Ashford.””

“You have no reason to question her.””

The detective’s expression changed.

Almost amused.

“Actually, we have several reasons.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“What reasons?””

The detective opened another page.

“Because Margaret Bell left behind a confession.””

Clara froze.

“What?””

The detective looked at her.

“She admitted she took a child from the Ashford family.””

Nobody moved.

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Clara.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No…”

“She also wrote that she didn’t act alone.””

The detective turned the page.

“She named someone.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

The detective looked toward Daniel.

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“This is insane.””

The detective didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

His silence was enough.

I looked at my husband.

The man who had slept beside me for ten years.

The man who held my hand during my mother’s funeral.

The man who told me he understood my pain.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Elizabeth, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Tell me it isn’t true.””

He stepped closer.

“I can explain.””

Those words.

Those horrible words.

People only said them when there was something to explain.

I stepped back.

“Were you involved?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

And that was the moment my heart broke.

Not because I had proof.

Because I didn’t need it.

His silence was the answer.

Clara covered her mouth.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Clara—”

“You knew who I was?””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew?””

Her voice cracked.

“I worked in this house.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I didn’t know at first.””

I felt sick.

“At first?””

He looked at me.

“Elizabeth, please.””

“How long?””

He said nothing.

“How long did you know?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Since the day you hired her.””

The room exploded.

My father cursed under his breath.

Thomas stepped back.

And Clara looked like someone had physically hit her.

“You watched me?””

Daniel’s face twisted.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””

“What way?””

Clara’s voice trembled.

“You wanted me here?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I needed to know if you were really her.””

My chest tightened.

“You used our home as a test?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You brought my daughter into this house knowing who she was.””

His expression broke.

“I was trying to fix things.””

“Fix things?””

I pointed toward Clara.

“You stole her entire identity.””

“No.””

“You let her believe she was nobody.””

“I was protecting her.””

I shook my head.

“From what?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The detective spoke quietly.

“Mr. Ashford, Mr. Daniel Cross, you are going to need to come with us for questioning.””

Daniel looked toward the door.

Then back at me.

And for one second, I saw the man I married.

The man who had made me laugh.

The man who had comforted me.

Then it disappeared.

Because beneath it was something else.

A secret he had carried for years.

Before the detective could take him, Daniel suddenly said:

“Elizabeth, there’s something you need to know.””

I stared at him.

“I’m done believing you.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“You should have asked why your father never found Clara.””

My father stiffened.

I turned.

“What?””

Daniel looked at my father.

“Because he wasn’t looking for her.””

My father’s face went pale.

“Don’t.””

Daniel continued.

“He knew exactly where she was.””

Clara whispered:

“What?””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel, stop.””

But it was too late.

The detective looked interested.

“Mr. Ashford?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

A smile that made my stomach twist.

“Ask him why he visited Margaret Bell every month for twenty-six years.””

The room became silent.

I looked at my father.

And for the first time in my life…

I saw fear on his face.

Not guilt.

Not anger.

Fear.

My voice shook.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

“Is it true?””

My father looked at Clara.

Then at me.

Then slowly lowered his eyes.

And whispered:

“Yes.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“Why?””

My father’s voice broke.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

He looked at Clara.

And said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“From the person who caused Clara to disappear.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

My father’s eyes moved toward Daniel.

Then back to me.

“Your mother.””

The room went completely still.

And somewhere inside me, something shattered.

Because the one person I trusted more than anyone…

May you like

The woman who left me that warning…

Had been hiding the darkest secret of all.
