Chapter 9: The Last Promise My Father Made
The photograph slipped from my mother’s fingers.
It landed on the old wooden desk beneath us.
Nobody picked it up.
Nobody wanted to.
Because everyone already knew what it showed.
Thomas Reed.
Standing beside my father.
The night before he died.
My mother stared at him as if she was seeing a stranger.
“Thomas…”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
The lawyer who had walked into my father’s funeral carrying the will.
The man who had promised to protect me.
The man who had held my father’s final wishes in his hands.
He looked down.
And for the first time since I met him, Thomas Reed looked guilty.
“I can explain.””
My mother laughed softly.
But there was no happiness in it.
“Explain what?””
She pointed at the photograph.
“Why you were with Richard the night he died?””
Thomas opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
My mother stepped backward.
“Were you the person he was afraid of?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
My mother shook her head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
I held onto her hand.
“Mommy…”
She looked down at me.
And immediately her expression changed.
She forgot about the anger.
She forgot about the betrayal.
For a moment, she was just my mother again.
“I’m here.””
But I could feel her hand shaking.
Daniel watched Thomas carefully.
“You always were good at hiding things.””
Thomas looked at him.
“You have no idea what happened.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Actually, I do.””
He pointed toward the photograph.
“Richard called me that night.””
Everyone froze.
My mother looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“He told me he finally knew who had been moving the money.””
Thomas looked away.
My mother noticed.
“You knew?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
His shoulders dropped.
“Yes.””
The word echoed.
My mother’s face changed.
“How long?””
“Months.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at me.
That answer made my mother even angrier.
“Don’t look at her.””
Thomas looked back at my mother.
“Because Richard was afraid.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Of what would happen if the wrong person found out.””
My grandmother suddenly spoke.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone turned.
Eleanor looked at Daniel.
“You’re blaming everyone except yourself.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And you’re still pretending.””
My grandmother stepped closer.
“You disappeared for years.””
“Yes.””
“Because you were ashamed.””
Daniel laughed.
“No.””
His eyes became cold.
“Because I found out what you did.””
The room became silent.
My mother looked between them.
“What did you do?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a small key.
“I found Richard’s backup files.””
Thomas looked surprised.
“Where?””
Daniel looked at the hidden room around us.
“Not here.””
He turned toward the wall.
“Richard knew this room could be discovered.””
My mother frowned.
“Then why did he leave everything here?””
“He didn’t.””
Daniel walked toward the old bookshelf.
He pressed against one of the wooden panels.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
Everyone stared.
Daniel removed it carefully.
“He knew someone would search this room.””
Thomas whispered:
“Another hidden place.””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard learned from the best.””
His eyes moved toward Eleanor.
My grandmother looked away.
Daniel opened the box.
Inside were three things.
A USB drive.
A sealed envelope.
And a small voice recorder.
My mother looked at the recorder.
“Another message?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard left it for Lily.””
My chest tightened.
Another message from my father.
Daniel pressed the button.
Static.
Then his voice.
My father.
“Lily.””
I stopped breathing.
Even though it was only a recording, hearing him again made me feel like he was standing beside me.
“If you are hearing this, then the people you trusted have finally been forced to show who they really are.””
My mother covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“I wish I could explain everything myself.””
A pause.
“But there are things I need you to know when you are older.””
I looked at my mother.
She was crying silently.
“First, your mother never betrayed me.””
My mother closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Claire was the only person who tried to save me.””
Daniel looked at her.
My father’s voice continued.
“Second, Thomas Reed protected me when he had every reason not to.””
My mother looked confused.
She turned toward Thomas.
The lawyer lowered his head.
The recording continued.
“Thomas, if you are hearing this, I know you are carrying guilt that does not belong to you.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
My father knew.
He knew everything.
“Third, Lily, there is one person you must forgive before you can understand the truth.””
Everyone waited.
The recording paused.
Then my father said:
“Me.””
My heart hurt.
“Because I spent too much time fighting battles I thought I had to fight alone.””
My mother grabbed my hand.
“I should have protected your mother better.””
The recording continued.
“I should have told Lily sooner how much she meant to me.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“You were never my weakness, Lily.””
A pause.
“You were my reason.””
Nobody spoke.
My father’s voice became quieter.
“If anyone tells you that your inheritance is about money, they are wrong.””
The recorder clicked.
Then the final sentence played.
“The greatest thing I left you was the truth.””
The recording stopped.
For a long time, nobody moved.
Then my mother looked at Thomas.
“What happened that night?””
Thomas sat down.
He looked older suddenly.
“I met Richard because he asked me to.””
My mother stared.
“Why?””
“Because he found evidence.””
“Of what?””
Thomas looked at Eleanor.
“Your mother-in-law was not the only person involved.””
My grandmother’s face changed.
Thomas continued.
“Richard discovered someone inside Ashford Holdings was helping her.””
Daniel nodded.
“That was why he contacted me.””
My mother looked at him.
“You two worked together?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“We were trying to protect Richard.””
Thomas’s voice became heavy.
“But we were too late.””
My mother whispered:
“What happened?””
Thomas looked down.
“Richard called me after he spoke to Claire.””
My mother froze.
“What?””
“He told me he was sorry for doubting you.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Then?””
“He said he was going to confront the person responsible.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at the photograph.
“The person who had access to everything.””
My grandmother stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
Thomas looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I protected you for years because Richard asked me to.””
Everyone froze.
My grandmother’s face changed.
“You?””
Thomas nodded.
“Richard believed exposing you immediately would put Lily in danger.””
My mother looked shocked.
“You knew?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I knew enough.””
The room went silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“But Richard was wrong about one thing.””
Thomas frowned.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He thought Eleanor was the biggest threat.””
My grandmother’s face went pale.
Daniel continued.
“She wasn’t.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Then who was?””
Daniel reached into the box one final time.
He pulled out a document.
A document with one name written across the top.
My mother took it.
Her face changed.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone none of us expected.
Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.
Someone Richard had trusted.
The name that appeared on the document was:
*Claire Bennett.*
My mother dropped the paper.
“No…”
Daniel looked at her sadly.
“That’s why Richard was investigating.””
My heart started racing.
“Mommy?””
She looked at me.
But she didn’t say anything.
Because for the first time in my life, my mother looked afraid of her own past.
And then Thomas whispered the truth:
“Richard didn’t discover that Claire betrayed him.””
May you like
He looked at the document.
“He discovered someone was trying to make it look like she did.””
