Chapter 8: The Person My Father Warned Me About

The recording ended.

But my father’s final words remained in the room.

*“Don’t trust the person standing beside your mother.””*

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I looked around the hidden room beneath the mansion.

My mother was beside me.

Thomas was across from us.

My grandmother stood near the staircase.

And suddenly, every person felt like a stranger.

Because my father’s warning had changed everything.

My small hand tightened around my mother’s fingers.

“Mommy?””

She looked down immediately.

“Yes, baby?””

“Who was Daddy talking about?””

Her face broke.

“I don’t know.””

But her voice was different.

Not like someone who didn’t know.

Like someone who was afraid of the answer.

Thomas picked up the recorder.

“Richard knew something.””

My grandmother laughed softly.

“Or he was confused.””

Thomas turned toward her.

“You expect us to believe that?””

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“My son was under pressure.””

“No,” my mother said quietly.

“He was careful.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the recorder.

“Richard didn’t make decisions without thinking.””

Thomas nodded.

“That’s true.””

My grandmother looked at my mother.

“You’re defending him now?””

My mother’s eyes became cold.

“I never stopped.””

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas walked toward the desk.

“We need to examine everything Richard left behind.””

My grandmother stepped forward.

“You’re not taking anything.””

Thomas looked at her.

“These documents belong to Lily.””

Eleanor smiled.

“You keep saying that as if a piece of paper makes a child powerful.””

Thomas answered calmly.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Her father did.””

My grandmother’s expression darkened.

Then she looked at me.

“Lily, do you know what happens when people fight over money?””

I didn’t answer.

She continued.

“They stop loving each other.””

My mother immediately moved closer.

“Don’t talk to her.””

But my grandmother ignored her.

“Your father created this mess.””

My eyes burned.

“He didn’t.””

Everyone went quiet.

I don’t know where my courage came from.

Maybe from my father.

Maybe from my mother.

Maybe from finally being tired of being treated like I was invisible.

“He loved me.””

Eleanor stared at me.

“He loved you so much he left you with a target on your back.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Enough.””

“No.””

My grandmother’s voice rose.

“She needs to know the truth.””

She pointed at the recorder.

“Richard knew this family was dangerous. He knew there were secrets. And yet he still left everything to her.””

She looked at me.

“Because he was selfish.””

The words hurt.

More than I expected.

My mother pulled me against her.

“Do not listen to her.””

But then something happened.

Something strange.

Because for the first time, I looked at my grandmother and didn’t feel afraid.

I felt sorry for her.

Because she had spent so many years chasing something.

And she still didn’t understand what my father had given me.

Not a mansion.

Not money.

A promise.

A promise that I mattered.

Thomas suddenly looked at the desk.

“Wait.””

He picked up a folder.

“There’s something missing.””

My mother looked at him.

“What?””

“The final pages of Richard’s journal.””

I frowned.

“Missing?””

Thomas nodded.

“The journal was complete when I saw it two days ago.””

My grandmother looked away.

My mother noticed.

“You took them.””

Eleanor’s face remained calm.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

My mother stepped closer.

“You knew about this room.””

“I know many things about this house.””

“You knew Richard’s journal existed.””

Eleanor said nothing.

Thomas opened another file.

“There are pages torn out.””

My mother looked at him.

“What was on them?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then the room’s old lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

A moment later, a loud crash came from upstairs.

My mother grabbed my hand.

“What was that?””

Thomas moved toward the staircase.

“Stay here.””

But before he reached the stairs, a voice came from above.

A man’s voice.

“Still giving orders, Thomas?””

Thomas froze.

My mother’s face changed.

She whispered:

“Daniel.””

Footsteps descended.

Slowly.

A man appeared at the bottom of the staircase.

He looked older than my father.

His hair was gray.

His face had the same sharp features as Richard.

But his eyes were different.

Cold.

Calculating.

Daniel Ashford had returned.

The man everyone thought was dead.

The man connected to every secret in the house.

My grandmother stared at him.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Daniel smiled.

“That’s what you told everyone.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother moved closer to me.

Daniel noticed.

“Claire.””

His voice was calm.

“I see you still protect her.””

My mother glared.

“You lied to me.””

Daniel looked hurt for a second.

Only a second.

“I tried to warn you.””

“You manipulated me.””

“I told you the truth.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“You told me what you wanted me to believe.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“You always were loyal to Richard.””

Thomas replied:

“And you always wanted what wasn’t yours.””

Daniel smiled.

“Still defending him after all these years?””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Then he looked at me.

“So this is Lily.””

I stepped closer to my mother.

Daniel studied me.

“You look like him.””

My mother’s voice became sharp.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Richard would have been proud.””

Nobody expected those words.

My mother looked confused.

“You’re saying you cared about him?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“More than anyone knows.””

Thomas frowned.

“Then why did you disappear?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the desk.

“Because I found out what this family was capable of.””

He looked at Eleanor.

“And because she made sure nobody would believe me.””

My grandmother’s face hardened.

“Don’t blame me for your failures.””

Daniel laughed.

“You always did that.””

He looked at my mother.

“Claire, your husband was right about one thing.””

“What?””

“The enemy was close.””

My mother stared at him.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the documents.

Then at Eleanor.

“She wasn’t working alone.””

The room went silent.

My grandmother looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“I’m done protecting you.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Who else was involved?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after Richard died.””

Thomas looked suspicious.

“What is it?””

“The reason Richard changed his will.””

He handed it to my mother.

She opened it slowly.

Inside was a photograph.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?””

I looked at the picture.

It showed my father.

But he wasn’t alone.

Beside him was someone familiar.

Someone who had been standing with us the entire time.

Someone I trusted.

My mother’s hand began shaking.

“No…”

Thomas looked at the photograph.

And his expression changed.

Because the person in the picture was not my grandmother.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone who had promised to protect me.

My mother looked up.

Her voice barely worked.

“Thomas…”

The lawyer froze.

Daniel whispered:

“Richard discovered the truth.””

My mother stared at Thomas.

“Why were you meeting my husband the night before he died?””

Thomas said nothing.

And that silence was the answer.

The man who had read my father’s will.

The man who claimed to protect my inheritance.

May you like

The man who had stood beside us from the beginning.

Was the person my father warned me about.
