Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Betrayal
The first thing I noticed was not the gunfire.
It was Victoria’s hand.
It wasn’t shaking.
Everyone else in the restaurant had reacted like normal people.
They ducked.
They screamed.
They searched for cover.
But Victoria Russo stood behind me holding the device from my father’s pen like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
Like she knew the chaos would happen.
Like she had planned where she would stand when it did.
I turned slowly.
“Victoria.””
Her expression was different.
The cruel confidence from earlier was gone.
The woman who had called me an illiterate servant was gone.
In her place was someone exhausted.
Someone who had carried a secret for too long.
“Listen to me, Casey.””
I stared at the device in her hand.
“Give it back.””
She didn’t move.
“You don’t understand what you just unlocked.””
“I understand enough.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You really don’t.””
Another gunshot echoed outside.
Dominic immediately pulled me behind the table.
“Get down!””
Victoria dropped beside us.
For once, nobody cared about social status.
Nobody cared about wealth.
Everyone was simply trying to survive.
The guards moved through the restaurant.
Guests were rushed toward the back exits.
Adrian grabbed my mother and pulled her away from the windows.
Dominic stayed beside me.
But my eyes remained on Victoria.
“You knew.””
She looked at me.
“Knew what?””
“That the pen existed.””
Silence.
That was enough.
I stood slowly.
“Victoria.””
Dominic grabbed my arm.
“Casey.””
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need answers.””
His expression softened.
Because he understood.
He had spent years protecting secrets.
He knew what it felt like when someone finally demanded the truth.
I turned back to Victoria.
“You knew about my father’s pen.””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“How?””
She swallowed.
“Because I helped him create it.””
The world seemed to stop.
“You?””
Victoria nodded.
“Before everything happened, before I became Victoria Russo, I was Victoria Bennett.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to Dominic.
His face changed.
“Bennett.””
Victoria looked at him.
“Yes.””
A long silence followed.
“What?”” I asked.
Dominic looked away.
“She was part of the original legal team.””
Victoria laughed quietly.
“Not exactly.””
She looked at me.
“I was an analyst.””
“Working with my father?””
“Yes.””
My mind struggled to connect the pieces.
“The woman who spent the entire night insulting me helped my father?””
Her expression tightened.
“I deserved that.””
The answer surprised me.
I expected denial.
I expected excuses.
Instead, she accepted it.
“I became someone I promised myself I would never become.””
The gunfire outside stopped.
The sudden silence felt worse.
Victoria continued.
“Your father was brilliant. But he was also stubborn.””
A faint smile appeared.
“He believed everyone could be saved if you showed them the truth.””
She looked at Dominic.
“He believed that about him too.””
Dominic said nothing.
“He was wrong about one thing.””
“What?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Not everyone wants the truth.””
I stared at the device.
“Then what is on the second file?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That the person who betrayed your father wasn’t just someone close to him.””
She paused.
“They were someone who had access to everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“The documents?””
“Yes.””
“The ledger?””
“Yes.””
“The people involved?””
“Yes.””
I looked around.
At Dominic.
At Adrian.
At my mother.
At Victoria.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Dominic spoke.
“Casey.””
I turned.
His expression was serious.
“Before you open that file, understand something.””
“What?””
“Whatever you see next cannot be undone.””
I almost smiled.
“Do you think I don’t know that?””
He looked at me.
“You still have the choice.””
The words surprised me.
Choice.
After everything.
After everyone making decisions for me.
Dominic Russo was the first person who had given me one.
I looked at the device.
Then at Victoria.
“Open it.””
She hesitated.
Then handed it to me.
The second file appeared.
A video.
This time, the recording quality was better.
The screen turned on.
And a woman appeared.
My mother.
Younger.
Twenty-six years ago.
My breath caught.
Elizabeth Miller sat across from someone whose face was hidden.
Her voice shook.
“I can’t do this anymore.””
The hidden person replied:
“You don’t have a choice.””
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the voice.
Not completely.
But enough.
A voice I had heard tonight.
My mother continued.
“You promised Daniel would be safe.””
The person answered:
“He was never supposed to find out.””
A pause.
Then my mother whispered:
“He trusted me.””
The person said:
“That was his mistake.””
The video froze.
I couldn’t move.
My mother looked like she was going to collapse.
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“What is this?””
She shook her head.
“Casey…”
“What is this?””
Her eyes filled.
“I can explain.””
Everyone says that when the truth arrives.
I hated those words.
I hated how they always came too late.
The video continued.
The hidden person leaned closer.
“You need to take the ledger.””
My mother’s voice broke.
“I can’t betray him.””
The person answered:
“You already did.””
My heart stopped.
My mother covered her face.
“No.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then I looked at my mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who disappeared.
The woman who came back tonight.
“Did you betray him?””
Tears fell down her face.
“Not the way you think.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
“Casey—”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You all keep giving me pieces.””
I looked at everyone.
“Every person here has a secret.””
I looked at my mother.
“Even you.””
She stepped toward me.
“I was trying to save him.””
“Then why did the video show you helping someone take the ledger?””
Her face collapsed.
“Because I did.””
Silence.
The admission was devastating.
“I took it.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel asked me to.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
My mother wiped her tears.
“Your father knew someone was watching him.””
She looked at Dominic.
“He knew his enemies were getting closer.””
She looked back at me.
“He needed someone they would never suspect.””
I whispered:
“You.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because the person watching us would have known.””
The answer was logical.
It was horrible.
But logical.
My mother continued.
“Daniel planned everything.””
“The disappearance?””
“Yes.””
“The death?””
Her face shattered.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“That was never supposed to happen.””
A silence.
Then Adrian stepped forward.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at Dominic.
“You need to tell her.””
Dominic’s expression changed.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Not now.””
“Especially now.””
I looked between them.
“What?””
Adrian said quietly:
“Daniel didn’t disappear because he was running from his enemies.””
A pause.
“He disappeared because he was trying to protect someone.””
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Dominic finally spoke.
“Me.””
The word hit harder than expected.
“You?””
He nodded.
“Daniel discovered someone inside my organization was planning to kill me.””
I frowned.
“Why would he protect you?””
Dominic looked at me.
“Because your father believed people could change.””
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“He believed it more than anyone.””
I looked at the device.
The files.
The secrets.
The lies.
Then something clicked.
The fake waiter.
The sniper.
The phone calls.
They weren’t trying to stop me from finding the truth.
They were trying to stop me from finding the complete truth.
Someone was still afraid.
Someone who had survived twenty-six years.
Someone who knew Daniel’s plan.
My mother suddenly looked toward the entrance.
Her face went pale.
“What is it?””
She whispered:
“No.””
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
No weapon.
No guards.
No fear.
An older man.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
Dominic went completely still.
Because he recognized him.
Adrian whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at them.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
The man smiled.
Then he said:
“Hello, Casey.””
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
The voice from the phone.
The man who claimed he watched my father die.
He looked directly at Dominic.
Then at my mother.
Then at me.
And said:
“Your father wanted you to know the truth.””
A pause.
“But he never wanted you to know it from them.””
He stepped into the restaurant.
“My name is Thomas Miller.””
My breath disappeared.
May you like
Because he said the one name that made the entire room fall silent.
“My name is your father.””
