Chapter 7: The Name Hidden in the Evidence
The name on the screen did not move.
It sat there in black letters against a white background, impossible to misunderstand.
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
Because the person who had betrayed my father wasn't a distant official.
Wasn't some unknown criminal hiding in another state.
Wasn't even Chief Mercer.
It was someone whose voice I had trusted.
Someone whose advice had guided my career.
Someone who had spent years telling me to keep searching.
The document showed only one line.
*Elena Ward.*
My supervisor.
My mentor.
The woman who had taught me everything I knew about investigations.
The woman who had sent me to the country road that morning.
The woman who had warned me not to return to the office.
My fingers went numb.
"No.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Halloway stared at me.
"You know her?""
I closed the laptop halfway.
"She runs the Public Integrity Division.""
Bell looked confused.
"Your division?""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
The silence that followed felt heavier than any accusation.
Halloway slowly sat back down.
"Then the person who sent you after corruption...""
I finished the sentence.
"Was protecting it.""
Nobody spoke.
The diner continued around us.
A couple laughed at a nearby table.
Someone dropped a fork.
The coffee machine hissed.
Normal sounds.
A normal night.
Except my entire understanding of the last year had collapsed.
Bell looked at the laptop.
"Could the file be fake?""
I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to believe it.
But investigators don't survive by believing what they want.
They survive by following evidence.
"I don't know.""
Halloway leaned forward.
"Victoria, you need to think carefully.""
I looked at him.
"About what?""
"About who knows you're here.""
The question made my stomach tighten.
I checked my phone.
Three missed calls.
All from Elena.
My first instinct was to answer.
Then I stopped.
Because suddenly I remembered every conversation.
Every time she had asked about my progress.
Every time she had wanted details about my father's case.
Every time she had encouraged me to continue.
I had thought she believed in justice.
Maybe she believed in control.
My phone rang again.
Her name appeared.
Bell looked at me.
"Are you going to answer?""
I stared at the screen.
Then I accepted the call.
"Victoria.""
Elena's voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Where are you?""
I didn't answer.
"Victoria, listen to me. Whatever you found, you need to stop.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Why?""
A pause.
A tiny pause.
But enough.
"Because you don't understand what you're dealing with.""
"I understand more than I did this morning.""
"Do you?""
Her voice softened.
"Your father made the same mistake.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What mistake?""
"Trusting that the truth would protect him.""
The diner seemed to disappear.
"You knew.""
Silence.
"You knew about my father.""
"I knew what he was investigating.""
"And you never told me.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
I almost laughed.
"Protect me?""
I looked at the officers sitting across from me.
"By letting me walk into the same trap?""
"Victoria, you have no idea what happened.""
"Then explain.""
Another pause.
Longer this time.
"I can't.""
"Can't?""
"Not over the phone.""
I stood.
"Where are you?""
"No.""
Her answer came instantly.
Too quickly.
"I don't want you coming here.""
That was all I needed.
She wasn't afraid for me.
She was afraid of what I would find.
"You killed him.""
The words left my mouth before I could soften them.
Halloway and Bell looked up.
Elena went quiet.
Then she whispered:
"I didn't kill Thomas Hale.""
I waited.
"But I helped bury what he discovered.""
My heart sank.
There it was.
Not a confession.
But close.
"Why?""
Her voice changed.
For the first time, I heard exhaustion.
"Because your father found something bigger than corruption.""
"What?""
"He found a network.""
"Of who?""
"People who could destroy careers, businesses, families.""
"That doesn't explain why you betrayed him.""
A long silence.
Then:
"Because he trusted the wrong person.""
The same words from the caller earlier.
The same warning.
I looked at Halloway.
He noticed.
Elena continued.
"Victoria, listen to me carefully. You need to leave the diner.""
"Why?""
"Because they know where you are.""
The lights outside suddenly flickered.
Bell noticed too.
He turned toward the window.
A black SUV had pulled into the parking lot.
No headlights.
No movement.
Just sitting there.
Elena whispered:
"Victoria?""
I didn't answer.
The SUV door opened.
A man stepped out.
And I recognized him immediately.
Not from the case.
Not from records.
From my father's video.
The man standing outside the diner was the person who had entered my father's office fifteen years ago.
The man who had said:
"You shouldn't have found this.""
Elena's voice came through the phone.
"Run.""
The call ended.
May you like
The diner door opened.
And the man walked inside.
