Chapter 9: The Man Who Knew Her Father
The police station smelled of wet coats, burnt coffee, and disinfectant.
Maya sat between Evelyn and Thomas in a small interview room while an officer placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a cream-colored envelope.
Maya recognized the handwriting immediately.
Her father's.
Her name was written across the front in the same careful letters she had seen on the first envelope at the gala.
*Maya Bennett. To be delivered if the cabinet is opened.*
She stared at it.
“Andrew had this?””
The officer nodded.
“It was found inside his vehicle, along with a set of documents and a mobile phone. We haven't opened the envelope because it may be relevant to your family's estate dispute.””
Thomas leaned forward.
“Was Andrew located?””
“Not yet. The vehicle was abandoned near the old service road. A witness reported seeing a man walking toward the highway shortly before officers arrived.””
“Did you recover the second key?””
The officer shook his head.
“No. We did recover a small brass key from the vehicle, but it doesn't appear to match the cabinet. We're having it examined.””
Maya looked at Thomas.
“Could it be another key?””
“Possibly.””
The officer slid a consent form across the table.
“We need to document that you're the named recipient. Mr. Reed can review the process with you.””
Thomas read the form before explaining it to Maya in simple terms. She signed where instructed, and the officer photographed the envelope before opening it under the evidence procedure.
Inside was a folded letter and a photograph.
The officer placed both on the table.
Maya reached for the photograph first.
It showed Daniel sitting at the kitchen table in the lake house. He looked younger than he had in the hospital, with his sleeves rolled up and a mug of coffee beside his hand.
Across from him sat Andrew Cole.
Between them lay a thick blue folder.
Maya turned the photograph over.
On the back, her father had written:
The day we made the promise.
She set it down and opened the letter.
My dearest Maya,
If Andrew has given you this letter, then he has finally decided to tell you the truth. I hope he has done so because he understands what he owes you, not because he believes he can bargain his way out of the consequences.
Maya stopped reading.
She looked at Thomas.
“Dad expected Andrew to give me this?””
“Apparently.””
She continued.
Before you were born, Andrew and I built a business together. We made mistakes, trusted the wrong people, and learned too late that money can turn friendship into a contest neither person remembers agreeing to play.
When the business failed, I discovered that a substantial amount of money had been diverted from an account intended to support our families. Andrew claimed he had moved it to protect it from creditors. I believed him for a time.
Then your mother found the original records.
Maya's fingers tightened around the paper.
Claire discovered that the account was not simply a business reserve. It was established under an agreement made before your birth. The money was intended to secure your future and the future of another child whose identity I cannot explain in this letter.
Maya looked up.
“Another child?””
Thomas held out his hand.
“May I read that passage?””
She gave him the letter.
He read silently, his expression growing more serious with every line.
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel never told me about another child.””
Maya felt as though the floor had shifted beneath her.
“Does Dad mean Andrew had another child?””
Thomas continued reading.
Andrew and I agreed that the money would remain untouched until both children were old enough to understand where it came from. But when Claire discovered the account had been altered, she confronted Andrew. After that, everything changed.
Andrew disappeared. Claire became frightened. I tried to repair the damage, but every attempt seemed to make things worse.
I cannot ask you to forgive anyone on my behalf. I can only ask you to remember that the truth belongs to you, even when it hurts.
The letter ended with a final sentence.
If you want to understand why Andrew returned, find the original agreement. The second key will lead you to it, but the document will only make sense when you know who the other child is.
Maya lowered the letter.
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
Then she whispered, “Who is the other child?””
Thomas folded his hands.
“We don't know yet.””
“But Dad did.””
“Yes.””
“Why wouldn't he tell me?””
“Perhaps he intended to tell you when you were older. Perhaps he thought it was safer to wait until he had secured the evidence. We shouldn't assume his reasons without more information.””
Maya looked at the photograph again.
Daniel and Andrew sat across from each other, their expressions serious but not hostile.
They looked like friends.
Not enemies.
“Did Andrew steal the money?”” she asked.
Thomas considered the question.
“The letter suggests Daniel suspected funds had been diverted, but it also says Andrew claimed he moved the money to protect it. We need the original financial records before deciding what happened.””
“Then why did Dad report him to the police?””
“Because he believed a crime might have occurred.””
“And why did he withdraw the complaint?””
Thomas glanced at the officer.
“That is something we need to investigate.””
The officer returned the photograph to its evidence sleeve and explained that the letter would be copied for Thomas's records.
Before leaving, Maya asked whether Andrew had contacted anyone after abandoning his vehicle.
The officer shook his head.
“Not that we can confirm.””
Maya thought of Julian's warning.
Your father should have told you what happened before you were born.
Now she knew that the missing key was tied to a financial agreement involving two children.
But she still didn't know who the second child was.
As they left the interview room, Thomas's phone vibrated.
He read the message and stopped walking.
“What is it?”” Evelyn asked.
“The bank has confirmed that the account number found behind Claire's photograph is valid.””
Maya stepped closer.
“Is there money in it?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
Thomas looked at her.
“The balance is substantial. The bank won't disclose the full details until the necessary legal documents are reviewed, but the account appears to have been funded over several years.””
“Is it mine?””
“We don't know yet. The account is connected to the agreement described in Daniel's letter, but we need to establish the beneficiaries.””
Maya felt a strange mixture of hope and dread.
If the money was meant for her, perhaps it explained why Daniel had gone to such lengths to protect the lake house.
Perhaps it explained why Vanessa had been desperate to sell it.
Perhaps it explained why Andrew had returned.
But if another child was involved, then Maya's inheritance was only part of the story.
They drove to Thomas's office, where his assistant had arranged for the certified trust documents to be delivered.
A thick file waited on the conference table.
Thomas opened it and spread the papers across the polished wood.
“The original trust agreement confirms that the lake house was held for your benefit,” he said.
“It also contains a clause requiring the trustee to preserve the property unless a court authorizes a sale or the specified beneficiaries consent.””
Maya leaned over the document.
“Did Vanessa have that authority?””
“Not on the information we have. She may have believed she did, or she may have knowingly exceeded her authority. The evidence will determine that.””
“Can we get the house back?””
“We can challenge the sale. Whether the property can be recovered depends on the transaction, the buyer's knowledge, and the applicable law.””
Evelyn pointed to a paragraph near the bottom of the agreement.
“What does this mean?””
Thomas read it carefully.
“It says that the trust was established to protect the interests of two named beneficiaries. One is Maya Bennett.””
He turned the page.
The second name was concealed beneath a strip of paper attached to the copy.
Thomas frowned.
“This copy has been redacted.””
“By whom?”” Maya asked.
“I'm not sure. The custodian may have provided a version with certain information withheld because the second beneficiary is a minor or because the record requires additional verification.””
“Can you get the unredacted version?””
“Yes. I've already requested it.””
Evelyn gripped the edge of the table.
“Daniel created a trust for two children and never told us?””
“He may have had reasons for keeping the arrangement confidential,” Thomas said.
“We need to avoid jumping to conclusions.””
Maya stared at the blank strip.
The other child.
The missing key.
The money.
The house.
Everything seemed to lead toward a person she had never met.
Then Thomas's assistant knocked and entered carrying a thin folder.
“Mr. Reed, this just came through from the bank's legal department. They included a copy of an older beneficiary designation.””
Thomas opened the folder.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he stopped.
Maya watched his face.
“What does it say?””
Thomas turned the document toward her.
Two names were printed beneath the heading *Protected Beneficiaries*.
The first was Maya Bennett.
The second was a name Maya recognized from the photograph in the toolbox.
*Lily Cole.*
Maya read it twice.
“Who is Lily Cole?””
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
Evelyn had gone pale.
“Andrew's daughter,” she whispered.
Maya stared at her.
“Andrew has a daughter?””
“He had a little girl,” Evelyn said slowly.
“I remember Claire mentioning her years ago. But I thought they moved away.””
Thomas examined the document.
“The designation lists Lily as a beneficiary alongside Maya. The arrangement appears to have been made before either child was old enough to understand it.””
Maya felt a strange ache in her chest.
Her father had protected another child.
A child whose father had allegedly stolen money from him.
A child connected to the man who had just broken into the boathouse.
“Why would Dad do that?”” she asked.
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
“Because Daniel wasn't the kind of man who punished a child for the mistakes of an adult.””
Maya thought of the lake house, the summers she had spent there, and the promises her father had made.
He had wanted to protect her.
But apparently, he had wanted to protect Lily, too.
Thomas turned another page.
“The account may have been established to support both children. If so, the funds may have been intended to provide for their education and housing, rather than to enrich one family at the expense of the other.””
Maya stared at the names.
“Then why did Andrew want the money?””
“That is still unclear.””
“And why did Vanessa sell the house?””
Thomas closed the folder.
“Possibly to satisfy the debt she mentioned. But we don't yet know whether she understood the full consequences of the sale or whether someone manipulated her.””
Maya thought of Vanessa's terrified face when Julian had arrived.
She didn't forgive her stepmother.
Not after the humiliation at the gala. Not after the lies about the lake house. Not after the cruel words about Daniel's death.
But she was beginning to see that Vanessa might not have been the only person hiding something.
A knock sounded at the office door.
Thomas's assistant entered with a sealed message.
“Someone left this at reception. They said it was for Maya.””
Thomas took the envelope and examined it.
No return address.
No signature.
Only a short message written in block letters.
*IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER, MEET ME AT THE LAKE HOUSE TONIGHT. COME WITHOUT THOMAS REED.*
Maya's pulse quickened.
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“No. Absolutely not.””
Thomas read the message again.
“This could be a trap.””
“Could it be Andrew?”” Maya asked.
“Possibly. It could also be someone trying to mislead us.””
Maya looked at the photograph of Daniel and Andrew.
Her father had left her a letter asking her to find the truth.
The second key had disappeared.
The cabinet had been forced.
And now someone was offering answers in exchange for secrecy.
“I want to go,” she said.
“No,” Evelyn replied.
“You are thirteen. You do not go alone to meet someone who may have threatened your family.””
Maya looked at her grandmother.
“I didn't say I'd go alone.””
Thomas leaned back in his chair.
“We won't respond to the message directly. I'll coordinate with the police, and if a meeting is appropriate, it will be arranged safely.””
Maya nodded, though disappointment tightened her chest.
Then she noticed something on the envelope.
A small symbol had been drawn in the corner: a circle with a line through it, exactly like the mark on the back of the photograph from the toolbox.
She pointed to it.
“Look.””
Thomas leaned closer.
Evelyn whispered something Maya could barely hear.
“That's Claire's mark.””
Maya looked at her grandmother.
“What does it mean?””
Evelyn stared at the symbol as if it had brought back a memory she had spent years trying to bury.
“It was how your mother marked the things she wanted Daniel to keep safe.””
Thomas slowly set the envelope on the table.
“Then whoever sent this message may have access to documents that belonged to Claire.””
Maya felt her heart beating against her ribs.
Her mother had known about the money.
Her father had protected two children.
And someone had just invited Maya to return to the place where her father's final secret had begun.
She looked at the message again.
Meet me at the lake house tonight.
Then she turned to Thomas.
“If we find out who sent this, will we finally know what happened to Dad?””
Thomas met her gaze.
“If the person has the evidence they claim to have, we may get closer to the truth.””
Maya picked up the photograph.
Daniel and Andrew stood together beside the water, smiling as if the future held nothing worse than a bad fishing day.
She wondered whether Lily Cole had a photograph like this somewhere.
Whether Lily knew that her father had once been friends with Daniel Bennett.
Whether she knew that a house beside a lake had been protected for her benefit, too.
And whether she was waiting somewhere for someone to explain why two men had spent years fighting over a promise made before either child was born.
That night, Maya would return to the lake house.
But this time, she wouldn't be going to reclaim a childhood memory.
May you like
She would be going to discover why her father had died with so many secrets still locked away.
And she would not leave until she had the truth.
