Chapter 5: The Uncle Who Knew Too Much

The room went silent after the officer said his name.

Michael Carter.

My uncle.

My father’s older brother.

The man who taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who brought me ice cream after my first heartbreak.

The man who told me, more than once, “Emily, you’re the smartest person in this family. Never let anyone make you forget that.””

Those memories crashed into the present like broken glass.

Because now his name was sitting in front of me.

Not as family.

As a suspect.

“No,” my mother whispered.

She looked at the officer.

“No, that can’t be right.””

The officer didn’t react.

“I’m only reporting what the system shows.””

My father stood up slowly.

“Michael wouldn’t do that.””

The commander looked at him.

“Wouldn’t do what?””

My father opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Because suddenly, he realized he didn’t know.

None of us did.

We knew the version of Michael he wanted us to know.

The funny uncle.

The generous uncle.

The man who always showed up with gifts.

The man who remembered everyone’s birthday.

But maybe there were parts of him we had never seen.

Daniel picked up the document again.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me something.””

“What?””

“Did your uncle know about your work before the crash?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“How much?””

I thought back.

“Everything.””

My answer surprised even me.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’s important.””

Ryan looked between us.

“Why?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“Because information is only dangerous when the wrong person has access to it.””

The words settled heavily.

I looked at my father.

“Did you tell Uncle Michael?””

My father looked away.

That was enough.

“You did.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I needed someone to talk to.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

His eyes moved to me.

“Emily.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Every time something happened, you found someone else to trust.””

My voice became sharper.

“Everyone except me.””

My father looked like he wanted to argue.

But he couldn’t.

Because it was true.

My entire life, decisions had been made around me.

Never with me.

The commander stepped closer to the table.

“We need to locate Michael Carter.””

My mother immediately looked alarmed.

“You think he’s dangerous?””

Nobody answered.

But nobody needed to.

That silence was worse.

Ryan stared at the floor.

“I don’t understand.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked up.

“Uncle Michael was the one person who always defended you.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Exactly.””

Ryan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means sometimes the person who knows exactly what you need is also the person who knows exactly how to hurt you.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone in the room understood.

The door opened again.

Another officer entered.

“Commander.””

He turned.

“Yes?””

“We found a vehicle registered to Michael Carter leaving the base perimeter fifteen minutes ago.””

The commander’s face hardened.

“Direction?””

The officer handed him a tablet.

“Heading north.””

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then at me.

“He’s running.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

She sounded like she was trying to convince herself.

“He wouldn’t run.””

I looked at her.

“Mom.””

She met my eyes.

“He knew.””

Her expression broke.

“What?””

I pointed at the folder.

“He knew about the files.””

She didn’t respond.

“He knew about my work.””

Silence.

“He knew what happened seven years ago.””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“And he never told us.””

The truth was finally reaching everyone.

Not just me.

The weight of it was finally landing on all of them.

The commander looked at me.

“Emily, I need you to stay here.””

I almost smiled.

There it was.

Another person telling me where to stand.

“What if I don’t?””

He studied me.

Most people would have been offended.

He wasn’t.

He simply understood.

“I expected you to say that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, this isn’t a normal situation.””

“I know.””

“You could be in danger.””

“I know.””

“You need protection.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“I spent seven years being treated like I was fragile.””

My voice softened.

“I know what danger looks like.””

Daniel looked away.

Because he knew.

He had been one of the people who taught me.

The commander nodded.

“Then you stay with security.””

It wasn’t a request.

It was an order.

And strangely, I respected that.

Before anyone could move, my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Again.

I looked at the screen.

The commander immediately held out his hand.

“Don’t answer.””

I stared at it.

The phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then I pressed accept.

“Hello?””

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a familiar voice.

“Emily.””

My blood turned cold.

I knew that voice.

I hadn’t heard it in years.

“Uncle Michael?””

Everyone reacted.

The commander immediately signaled for the call to be traced.

Michael sighed.

“You should not have come today.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You knew.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

My chest hurt.

“Why?””

His voice became quieter.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

Another person.

Another excuse.

“Everyone says that.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to tell me to listen.””

A long silence.

Then Michael said:

“I know what your father did.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

“He made a mistake.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A mistake?””

“Your father thought he was saving you.””

“He destroyed my life.””

Michael didn’t deny it.

“I know.””

“Were you part of it?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

“Uncle?””

His voice changed.

Not defensive.

Not angry.

Sad.

“I tried to stop them.””

“Who is them?””

No answer.

“Michael.””

I heard him breathe.

Then:

“Emily, you have to understand something.””

“What?””

“You were never the target because of what you did.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because of what you knew.””

The line went quiet.

The commander looked at me and mouthed:

Keep him talking.

I nodded.

“What do you mean?””

Michael’s voice lowered.

“The night of the crash, you found out someone inside the system was selling information.””

My heart pounded.

“I already knew that.””

“No.””

His voice became urgent.

“You knew there was a leak.””

A pause.

“But you didn’t know who.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

Michael whispered:

“I’m saying the person responsible was never outside the organization.””

The room went still.

The commander’s expression changed.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily.””

I ignored them.

“Who was it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“Who was it, Uncle?””

His voice cracked.

“I can’t tell you over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because if they’re listening…”

The call suddenly became distorted.

Static.

Then silence.

I looked at the screen.

The call had ended.

The commander immediately moved.

“Can we trace it?””

The officer checked.

“Negative.””

Daniel looked furious.

“He knew.””

I stared at my phone.

My mind was racing.

Michael hadn’t called to threaten me.

He called to warn me.

But warnings only mattered if there was still time.

The commander looked at the folder.

“Emily, we need to review every person who had access to these files.””

I nodded.

Then something caught my eye.

A detail I had missed.

A small line near the bottom of the report.

I picked up the document.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” Ryan asked.

I pointed.

“This signature.””

Daniel looked.

Then froze.

“What?””

I moved the page closer.

“This isn’t Michael’s authorization.””

The room went silent.

The commander leaned in.

“Are you sure?””

I nodded.

“I’ve seen his signature my entire life.””

I looked at the name.

The ink.

The approval code.

Something was wrong.

“Someone used his credentials.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“Then Michael isn’t the person who accessed the files.””

My father exhaled.

“Thank God.””

But I wasn’t relieved.

Because if Michael wasn’t responsible…

Then someone else was.

Someone who had access.

Someone who knew our family.

Someone who knew the ceremony.

Someone who knew I would be here.

The commander’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A pause.

His face changed.

He looked directly at me.

“Emily.””

I stood.

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The security team found the person who copied your files.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

The commander didn’t answer immediately.

And somehow, that frightened me more.

Because I knew whatever came next would change everything.

Finally, he said:

“It wasn’t your uncle.””

A pause.

“It was someone sitting in this room.””

Everyone looked around.

My family.

Daniel.

The officers.

The commander.

And then my eyes landed on the person standing closest to the door.

The person who had barely spoken all morning.

The person who had watched everything.

The person holding my mother’s hand.

My breath caught.

May you like

Because the commander said the name.

“Linda Carter.””
