Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
The letter fell from my hands.
For several seconds, neither Daniel nor I moved.
The words remained between us.
*The person who betrayed Adrian was the person who raised you.*
I looked at Daniel.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
“No,” he whispered.
I swallowed.
“Do you know who wrote this?””
He shook his head slowly.
“No.””
“But you kept it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His eyes moved to the box.
“Because Adrian gave it to me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel looked at the letter again.
“He gave me this before he disappeared.””
I stepped closer.
“When?””
“The night he came to our house.””
The room suddenly felt colder.
“You saw him?””
Daniel nodded.
“He came to say goodbye.””
I stared at him.
“Goodbye?””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“He knew something was wrong.””
“What?””
“He believed someone was following him.””
My fingers curled.
“Who?””
Daniel looked away.
“That’s the part I never understood.””
I picked up the letter again.
My eyes moved over the words.
Someone close to my mother.
Someone who raised me.
Someone who had access to my life.
The possibilities were terrifying.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Who else knew?””
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“Your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“She knew Adrian was leaving?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know why?””
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
Daniel looked hurt.
“I was never part of their world, Emma.””
His voice cracked.
“I was just the person who stayed.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because Daniel had never been the villain.
He had been the man who loved me while everyone else fought over secrets.
I sat down.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel was silent for a long time.
Then he began.
“Adrian came to our house around midnight.””
Daniel looked at the empty bank room as if he could still see it.
“He looked terrified.””
I listened carefully.
“He had a bag with him.””
“What was inside?””
“Documents.””
“About what?””
Daniel shook his head.
“He didn’t tell me everything.””
“Why not?””
“Because he thought the less I knew, the safer I would be.””
My hands tightened.
“What did he say?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He told me to take care of you.””
My breath caught.
“You weren’t even my father yet.””
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“But he knew I loved you.””
The room became silent.
“He said Richard would come after him.””
“And then?””
“He left.””
“Just like that?””
Daniel nodded.
“But before he left, he said something I never forgot.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He said, ‘The person who hurts me won’t be the person who hates me. It will be the person who knows exactly how much I trust them.’”
A chill ran through me.
Because that wasn’t an accusation against Richard.
It was a warning about betrayal.
We returned home after dark.
I barely spoke.
My mind was full of names.
My mother.
Richard.
Mrs. Carter.
Daniel.
Everyone had a piece of the truth.
Everyone had reasons.
But only one person had raised me.
Only one person knew every detail of my life.
My mother.
When I entered the house, she was waiting.
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
And immediately knew.
“You found the box.””
I stared.
“You knew about it?””
Her face fell.
“Yes.””
Of course.
Another secret.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I don’t think you understand.””
I stepped closer.
“I have spent my entire life trusting you.””
“I know.””
“You told me everyone was dangerous.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Yes.””
“But you were the one hiding the truth.””
She didn’t defend herself.
That almost made it worse.
“Tell me what happened.””
My mother sat down slowly.
“I didn’t betray Adrian.””
The words came quietly.
I wanted to believe her.
But I had learned something.
Believing was easy.
Knowing was harder.
“Then who did?””
She looked at me.
And for a moment, she seemed afraid.
Not of me.
Of the answer.
“I don’t know.””
I stared.
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“Adrian thought he knew.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Then whispered:
“Mrs. Carter.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
My mother nodded.
“She was the only person besides us who knew Adrian was alive.””
The memory hit me.
Mrs. Carter.
Her fear.
Her secrets.
Her promise.
But also her warning.
“She helped me.””
My mother looked surprised.
“She helped you?””
“Yes.””
I told her about the conversation.
About Mrs. Carter saying Richard controlled the competition.
About Adrian coming back.
About everything.
My mother listened silently.
Then she said:
“She might have been protecting you.””
I stared.
“After helping them?””
“Emma…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done making excuses for people.””
My mother looked at me.
And I realized something.
She agreed.
The next morning, I went to find Mrs. Carter.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t warn her.
I needed to see her reaction.
The dance studio was empty.
Except for her.
She was sitting alone on the floor.
Looking at old photographs.
When she saw me, she sighed.
“I knew you would come.””
I stood in the doorway.
“Did you betray Adrian?””
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“No.””
“Then why did everyone think you did?””
She looked down.
“Because I let them.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Mrs. Carter stood slowly.
“I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
She walked toward the mirror.
“Years ago, I told Richard where Adrian was hiding.””
The words hit like a punch.
“You did.””
She nodded.
“I thought I was protecting him.””
“From what?””
“From himself.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
She turned.
“Adrian wanted to expose Richard.””
“And?””
“He had evidence.””
My heart raced.
“What kind of evidence?””
“Evidence that could destroy the Vale family.””
“Then why stop him?””
“Because Richard threatened everyone.””
She looked at me.
“Your mother. You. Daniel.””
I felt anger rising.
“So you betrayed him.””
“I gave Richard information.””
“That’s betrayal.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I thought Richard would scare him.””
“And he didn’t.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He disappeared.””
Silence.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Did Richard hurt him?””
Mrs. Carter looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“But you suspect.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
That afternoon, I received a message.
Unknown number.
Again.
But this time, there was a photo attached.
I opened it.
My blood went cold.
It was Adrian.
A recent photo.
Not eighteen years old.
Not a memory.
Today.
He was standing outside a building.
And behind him was a sign.
A private research facility.
Then another message appeared.
*You are looking in the wrong direction.*
I stared.
A third message came.
*Your father didn’t disappear. He was erased.*
My hands trembled.
Then the final message arrived.
*Ask Daniel what happened the night Adrian came to your house.*
I looked up.
Because I suddenly remembered.
Daniel’s hesitation.
His missing details.
The things he said he didn’t know.
But what if he did?
What if everyone had been protecting me from the same truth?
I ran downstairs.
Daniel was in the garage.
“Dad.””
He looked up.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
His face changed immediately.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know this place?””
The silence answered before he did.
“Daniel.””
He slowly put down the tool in his hand.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“Adrian didn’t disappear that night.””
I froze.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel swallowed.
“He was taken.””
“By who?””
He looked toward the floor.
And whispered:
“By someone who was supposed to protect him.””
My breath stopped.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
And said the name I never expected.
“Your mother.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
Because after all the lies…
After all the secrets…
May you like
The person I had spent my whole life believing was my protector…
might have been the reason my real father vanished.
