Chapter 2: The Name Behind The Betrayal

I stared at the phone screen until the words stopped looking like words.

The video kept playing.

Brianna’s voice echoed through the tiny backstage corner.

“If she can’t compete tonight, the judges won’t have a choice.””

My fingers tightened around Lily’s phone.

I wanted to believe I had misunderstood.

I wanted to believe there was another explanation.

But there wasn’t.

I knew that voice.

I knew that confidence.

Brianna had not made a mistake.

She had made a plan.

And the worst part wasn’t that she wanted me gone.

It was that she wasn’t alone.

“Emma?””

Lily’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

“Who did she say?””

Lily hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Lily.””

She looked toward the stage entrance.

“Please.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I don’t want to get in trouble.””

My stomach twisted.

“You already helped me.””

She shook her head.

“No, I just recorded something.””

“You recorded proof.””

“But proof against Brianna is dangerous.””

The stage manager called again.

“Emma Walker! If you are not ready, you will lose your position!””

My heart jumped.

The competition.

The stage.

The judges.

Everything I had worked for was waiting ten feet away.

But now all I could think about was one question.

Who was helping Brianna?

I handed the phone back to Lily.

“Tell me.””

She took a slow breath.

“Your ballet teacher.””

For a second, I thought I had heard wrong.

“My what?””

Lily looked miserable.

“Mrs. Carter.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Lily lowered her voice.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She wouldn’t.””

Mrs. Evelyn Carter was the reason I was standing there.

She was the one who believed in me.

The one who stayed late after class to correct my mistakes.

The one who gave me her old ballet shoes when mine split during rehearsal.

She wasn’t just my teacher.

She was the person who convinced me I had a chance.

“She wouldn’t do that.””

Lily looked away.

“I heard them talking yesterday.””

My heart sank.

“What did you hear?””

She swallowed.

“Brianna said she was worried you might impress the judges.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“And Mrs. Carter?””

“She said…”

Lily stopped.

“What did she say?””

Lily looked at me with sympathy.

“She said some dancers were never meant to move beyond their level.””

The words cut deeper than Brianna’s insults.

Because Brianna had always hated me.

But Mrs. Carter?

I had never expected betrayal from her.

“Emma.””

I looked toward the stage.

The curtains were open slightly.

Bright lights spilled through the gap.

The audience was waiting.

My name was about to be announced.

I had two choices.

Walk away.

Or dance.

I wiped my eyes.

“I’m going.””

Lily blinked.

“What?””

“I’m going on stage.””

“But—”

“If I leave now, Brianna wins.””

I fixed the damaged costume.

The stitches weren’t beautiful.

The tears were still there.

But I was still standing.

I walked toward the stage.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

The music started.

The lights hit my face.

For a moment, I forgot everything.

The audience disappeared.

The judges disappeared.

Brianna disappeared.

There was only the music.

And the movement.

My body knew what to do.

Every hour of practice lived inside me.

Every painful rehearsal.

Every correction.

Every fall.

Every time I got back up.

I danced.

Not perfectly.

Not like someone wearing a flawless costume.

But like someone who had something to prove.

When I spun across the stage, I heard the audience go silent.

Not bored silence.

The kind of silence where people are watching closely.

The final note arrived.

I landed the last position.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then the applause came.

Loud.

Unexpected.

I lowered my head.

My chest rose and fell.

I had done it.

I had actually done it.

As I walked offstage, Mrs. Carter was waiting.

Her expression was impossible to read.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

Normally, hearing my name from her would have comforted me.

Now it made my stomach hurt.

“Yes?””

She looked at my repaired dress.

“You performed beautifully.””

I stared at her.

“Thank you.””

There was a pause.

A long one.

Then she reached toward my shoulder.

I stepped back.

Her hand stopped in the air.

Something flashed across her face.

Guilt.

Or maybe disappointment.

I couldn’t tell.

“You should focus on the competition,” she said quietly.

I looked at her.

“I am.””

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“Good.””

Then she walked away.

That was when I knew.

Something was wrong.

The awards ceremony took place an hour later.

All the dancers stood in a line wearing their costumes.

Brianna stood three places away from me.

Her dress was perfect.

Of course it was.

Not a single wrinkle.

Not a single loose thread.

She looked like the winner already.

When she noticed me staring, she smiled.

Not kindly.

“You actually went through with it.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

She glanced at my repaired costume.

“I’m impressed.””

I knew better than to believe her.

“Why?””

“Because most people would have accepted reality.””

“And what reality is that?””

She stepped closer.

“That some people are born to be noticed.””

Her eyes moved over me.

“And some people spend their whole lives trying.””

I kept my voice calm.

“You’re afraid.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Excuse me?””

“You’re afraid I might actually beat you.””

A few dancers nearby looked over.

Brianna laughed.

“You think this is about talent?””

The question bothered me.

Because she sounded certain.

“What else would it be about?””

She leaned closer.

“You really don’t know, do you?””

Before I could answer, the announcer stepped onto the stage.

“Ladies and gentlemen, before we announce tonight’s finalists, the judges have received information regarding a serious issue involving one of the competitors.””

The room went silent.

My heart dropped.

Brianna looked at me.

And smiled.

Not surprised.

Prepared.

The announcer continued.

“There has been a report of costume damage caused intentionally backstage.””

Everyone started whispering.

My hands went cold.

Brianna folded her arms.

The announcer looked down at a piece of paper.

“The competition committee has reviewed the matter and needs to speak with…”

His eyes lifted.

Straight toward me.

“Emma Walker.””

The entire room turned.

I felt every pair of eyes land on me.

Brianna’s expression changed.

Not fear.

Satisfaction.

I stepped forward slowly.

“What is this?””

A competition official approached.

“We need you to come with us.””

“Why?””

The official glanced at my dress.

Then at the judges.

“We received a complaint.””

“A complaint about what?””

The woman lowered her voice.

“You have been accused of damaging another dancer’s costume.””

My mouth fell open.

“What?””

The whispers grew louder.

Brianna looked down, pretending to be shocked.

“Oh my God.””

I turned toward her.

“You did this.””

She placed a hand over her chest.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“You know exactly what you’re talking about.””

The official stepped between us.

“Emma, please.””

I looked around.

The dancers.

The judges.

The audience.

Everyone was watching me like I had become the villain in a story I didn’t write.

Then I saw Mrs. Carter.

Standing beside the judges.

She wouldn’t look at me.

That hurt more than anything.

“Mrs. Carter.””

Her head lifted.

Our eyes met.

“Did you tell them I did this?””

A heavy silence filled the room.

The question hung there.

Everyone waited for her answer.

For the woman who had taught me everything.

For the woman who had told me talent mattered more than money.

For the woman I trusted.

Finally, she spoke.

And her words destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“Emma…”

She looked away.

“I think you should tell them the truth.””

My heart stopped.

“What truth?””

She took a breath.

Then she said the sentence I would remember for the rest of my life.

“The truth about why you were really here.””

May you like

And suddenly, I realized Brianna’s plan had never been about ruining my dress.

It was about ruining my name.
