Thinking

Chapter 10: The Truth Emma Left Behind

The sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Then another.

Then another.

Victoria’s face lost all color.

“They’re here.””

The words were barely audible.

I looked toward the windows.

The mansion that had always felt like a fortress suddenly felt like a cage.

Every shadow outside seemed alive.

Every corner seemed to hide another secret.

I held Lily closer.

“Who?””

Victoria didn’t answer immediately.

She looked at the flash drive.

The files.

The hidden archive.

The evidence Emma had spent years protecting.

Then she looked at me.

“The people who helped Charles.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the front doors shook.

Not knocked.

Shook.

Someone wasn’t asking to come in.

Someone was forcing their way inside.

James moved toward the hallway.

“I’ll stop them.””

“No.””

I grabbed his arm.

For the first time tonight, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not fear.

Determination.

“Damon, I owe you the truth.””

“You owe me a lot.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The door cracked.

The security system remained dead.

Someone had planned this.

Someone knew exactly how vulnerable the mansion was.

Victoria grabbed Lily’s hand.

“Where is the backup exit?””

I looked at her.

“You know this house better than anyone.””

She nodded.

“Charles showed me everything when I worked for him.””

That sentence reminded me of everything.

The lies.

The manipulation.

The betrayal.

But also…

The times she stayed.

The times she protected me.

The times she could have destroyed me and didn’t.

I didn’t know what Victoria was anymore.

Enemy.

Friend.

Something in between.

But Emma had trusted her.

And somehow, that mattered.

“Take Lily.””

Victoria looked surprised.

“What?””

“Get her out.””

“Damon—”

“I’m not losing another person I love tonight.””

She nodded.

For once, there was no argument.

James moved toward the bookshelf.

“There’s a passage behind the archive.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Of course you did.””

The bitterness escaped before I could stop it.

James accepted it.

“I know.””

He pressed a hidden button.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

Lily stared.

“Mommy knew about this.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She said Daddy would find the hidden door.””

My heart tightened.

Emma had planned for this.

She knew.

She knew someday the truth would come out.

She knew I would need a way out.

I almost smiled.

Even after everything…

She was still protecting me.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

They were inside.

Victoria grabbed Lily.

“Come on.””

But Lily didn’t move.

She looked at me.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Are you coming?””

I knelt beside her.

“I’m right behind you.””

She studied my face.

Like she was checking if I meant it.

Then she nodded.

“Mommy said you would keep your promise.””

I watched them disappear into the passage.

Then I turned back.

James stood beside me.

“You’re staying.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Because someone destroyed my family.””

I picked up the folder.

“And tonight, they answer for it.””

Footsteps echoed through the mansion.

Slow.

Confident.

The kind of footsteps belonging to someone who believed they owned the place.

A man appeared at the end of the hallway.

Adrian Cross.

The doctor.

The man who signed Emma’s death certificate.

The man who helped erase my wife from the world.

He looked older than I remembered.

But his expression was the same.

Calm.

Controlled.

“Damon.””

I stared at him.

“Where is my father?””

Adrian sighed.

“You were always too emotional.””

The words made my anger rise.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

He said it so easily that it almost shocked me.

“You killed my wife.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I saved her.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Charles was never the real threat.””

I froze.

Everyone had said those words.

Everyone had pointed to someone else.

But this time, Adrian looked different.

Not like a liar.

Like someone who had been waiting years to explain.

“Then who was?””

Adrian looked toward the passage where Victoria and Lily escaped.

“Ask Victoria.””

My jaw tightened.

“Stop using her name.””

Adrian smiled slightly.

“She never told you the whole story.””

“Neither did you.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“That’s why you’re angry.””

I stepped forward.

“Tell me.””

Adrian looked tired.

“Charles planned to take your company.””

“Yes.””

“He planned to destroy Emma.””

“Yes.””

“But he didn’t plan the accident.””

I froze.

“What?””

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Someone else did.””

The world became silent.

“Who?””

Adrian looked behind me.

At James.

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

James stepped back.

“Damon…”

Adrian smiled.

“The hardest truth is always the one closest to home.””

I looked at James.

“No.””

James shook his head.

“Listen to me.””

“Were you involved?””

“Damon—”

“Were you?””

His silence answered.

I felt betrayed all over again.

James looked broken.

“I didn’t want anyone hurt.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

“I was trying to stop it.””

“Then why did Emma disappear?””

James looked down.

“Because I failed.””

Adrian laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.””

I turned.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

“James didn’t cause the accident.””

I stared.

“Then who?””

A sound came from behind us.

A voice.

A voice I knew.

A voice that had haunted me all night.

“Me.””

I turned.

Charles Whitmore stood at the entrance.

My father.

Alive.

Calm.

Unharmed.

Like this was another business meeting.

Not the destruction of my entire life.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“I wanted to tell you myself.””

I felt something break.

“You had five years.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I was protecting you.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Charles looked at the folder in my hand.

“You found the archive.””

“Yes.””

He sighed.

“I hoped you never would.””

“Why?””

He looked older suddenly.

Not weaker.

Just older.

“Because once you know the truth, you can never go back.””

I laughed.

“I lost my wife.””

I pointed toward the passage.

“I lost my daughter’s childhood.””

I looked at him.

“I lost five years.””

My voice broke.

“There is no going back.””

For the first time, my father looked ashamed.

“Emma discovered everything.””

“Yes.””

“She wanted to expose me.””

“Yes.””

“So you took her.””

His silence answered.

“You let me bury her.””

“I thought it was the only way.””

“Only way?””

My anger exploded.

“You stole my family.””

Charles looked down.

“I saved your life.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You destroyed it.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Charles looked at his phone.

Then mine.

A video message appeared.

From Emma.

Not old.

New.

Recorded minutes ago.

I opened it.

Emma appeared on the screen.

Alive.

Her face exhausted.

But smiling.

“Damon.””

Everyone went quiet.

“I know you found the truth.””

She looked at Charles.

Then back at me.

“There is something you need to understand.””

My heart raced.

“Charles did terrible things.””

My father looked away.

“But he was not the only one.””

I held my breath.

“The person who started all of this…”

Emma paused.

“…was me.””

The room froze.

I stared at the screen.

Emma continued.

“I discovered Charles’ crimes, but I also discovered something worse.””

She looked down.

“I found out someone inside our family had been manipulating everything.””

The video changed.

A document appeared.

A name.

A signature.

I stared.

Because I recognized it.

Everyone did.

Emma’s voice continued.

“The accident was never about Charles taking your company.””

A pause.

“It was about stopping me from revealing who was really controlling him.””

The document showed the final signature.

Not Charles.

Not Adrian.

Not James.

Someone else.

Someone we had trusted.

Someone who had been invisible.

Then Emma said the words that changed everything.

“The person behind this is the one person you never suspected.””

The video ended.

A silence followed.

Nobody moved.

Then Victoria stepped out of the passage.

Her face was pale.

“Damon…”

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at Charles.

Then Adrian.

Then James.

And finally at me.

“I know who it is.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Victoria swallowed.

Then whispered:

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother died.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No, Damon.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother was alive.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

Victoria stepped closer.

“She was the person controlling everything from the beginning.””

I couldn’t speak.

Because the woman I buried before I ever lost Emma…

The woman whose death shaped my entire life…

Was the final secret.

And then my phone buzzed.

One last message.

A photograph.

An older woman standing outside a house.

Alive.

Smiling.

May you like

Underneath it were five words:

*Come find me, son.*
