Chapter 8: The Betrayal Beneath the Blueprint
Marcus didn't move for several seconds.
His business partner.
Daniel Brooks.
The man who had stood beside him on construction sites for eleven years. The man who had helped him secure contracts, negotiated supplier agreements, and attended Nia's birthday parties when she was younger.
Daniel had been there when Marcus bought his house.
He had been there when Nia's eyesight began deteriorating.
And he had known exactly how much money Marcus was saving for her treatment because Marcus had once asked him for advice about managing the account.
Marcus looked at Jordan.
"Are you sure?""
Jordan shook his head.
"Victor mentioned him. I didn't believe it at first.""
"What exactly did Victor say?""
"He said Daniel had introduced him to Mom. He said Daniel knew the family finances and could help identify assets that would support the loans.""
Marcus felt a slow, sickening anger rise through him.
"Did you hear Daniel's name directly from Victor?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"About two months ago.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Jordan looked ashamed.
"Because I thought he was just helping with the business.""
"Helping you steal money?""
"No!""
Jordan's voice rose, then dropped.
"I didn't know what they were doing at first. Daniel told me he could introduce me to investors. He said my business needed a proper financial structure. He said the loans would be temporary.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
He remembered the first time Daniel had mentioned private investment.
They had been standing beside a half-built commercial property, reviewing the budget for a new development.
Daniel had asked how Jordan was doing.
Marcus had admitted that the young man was struggling to find direction.
Daniel had smiled and said, "Some people just need someone who believes in them.""
At the time, Marcus had considered it a kind remark.
Now the memory felt contaminated.
"Did Daniel ever ask you for documents?"" Marcus asked.
Jordan nodded.
"He wanted copies of the business registration, bank statements, and some information about the family accounts.""
"And you gave them to him?""
"Some of them.""
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"What did you give him?""
"Business statements. The company registration. A copy of your address from a form Mom had.""
"Did you give him Nia's account details?""
"No. Mom had those.""
Marcus looked toward the parking lot again.
The black SUV had disappeared.
He called Elaine and explained what Jordan had said. She instructed him to bring the flash drive and email to her office immediately, then warned him not to contact Daniel until the evidence had been reviewed.
Marcus agreed.
But on the drive, his mind returned repeatedly to one question.
How much had Daniel known?
Elaine's office was quiet when Marcus and Jordan arrived.
She locked the flash drive in an evidence envelope after documenting its receipt, then copied the email and added it to the file.
"Jordan," she said, "I need you to understand that these documents may be important evidence. You must not delete, alter, or conceal any other records. If investigators contact you, you should seek independent legal advice and answer truthfully.""
Jordan nodded.
Elaine turned to Marcus.
"The allegations involving Daniel are serious. We need corroboration before reaching conclusions.""
"I understand.""
"Do you have any documents showing that he introduced Victor to Vanessa?""
"Not yet.""
Jordan shifted in his chair.
"I might.""
Both adults turned toward him.
"What do you mean?"" Marcus asked.
Jordan reached for his phone.
"Victor sent me a message months ago. I didn't think it mattered at the time.""
He opened his email and searched through the messages.
After several minutes, he found one.
The email was short.
Jordan, Daniel says you're ready to move forward. Bring your business records to the meeting Thursday. We can discuss financing after reviewing the information.
It was signed by Victor Hale.
Marcus read it twice.
Daniel's name was clearly there.
But Elaine remained cautious.
"This establishes that Victor communicated with Jordan and referred to Daniel. It doesn't establish that Daniel participated in any fraud.""
Jordan nodded.
"I know.""
Elaine leaned forward.
"Did you attend the meeting?""
"Yes.""
"Who was present?""
"Victor, Daniel, Mom, and me.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Vanessa met Daniel and Victor together?""
Jordan nodded.
"At Victor's office.""
"When?""
"About three months ago.""
Elaine wrote down the date.
"What happened?""
Jordan rubbed his hands together.
"Daniel said the business needed capital. Victor asked about the family property. Mom said you owned the house and had a separate medical savings account for Nia.""
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"She told them that in front of you?""
"Yes.""
"And what did Daniel say?""
Jordan stared at the floor.
"He said you were careful with money, but you could be persuaded if the right opportunity came along.""
Marcus felt as if someone had punched him.
Daniel knew him well enough to understand that Marcus would never knowingly risk Nia's treatment money.
So Daniel had apparently helped construct a situation in which Marcus's consent could be bypassed.
"What else?"" Elaine asked.
Jordan swallowed.
"Victor asked whether you had any business interests that could be used as security.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Did Daniel tell him about our company?""
Jordan nodded.
"He said your share of the business was valuable. He also said there were contracts coming up that could make the company worth more.""
Marcus stared at the desk.
The business he had built with Daniel had taken more than a decade to establish.
They had started with small renovation jobs, working from a rented office and sharing equipment. They had gradually moved into commercial projects, hired a team, and built a reputation for finishing jobs on schedule.
Marcus had trusted Daniel with the company's financial records because that was what partners did.
Now he wondered whether the man had been using that trust to identify opportunities for someone else.
Elaine closed the laptop.
"I recommend that you obtain independent advice concerning your business interests, review all access permissions, and preserve company records. Don't make any unilateral changes that could compromise evidence or violate existing agreements.""
Marcus nodded.
"Can I ask Daniel directly?""
"You can, but I strongly recommend waiting until we've reviewed the available evidence and considered the implications. If he is involved, confronting him could alert him to the investigation.""
Marcus understood the logic.
He hated it anyway.
Daniel was not a stranger.
He was the man who had helped Marcus carry Nia's hospital bags when she was first admitted for testing. He was the man who had brought dinner to the house after Marcus's father died.
The idea that he might have used that history to gain access to Marcus's finances felt worse than the possibility of losing money.
It meant that memories Marcus had trusted were now questions he couldn't answer.
At 3:20 p.m., Marcus returned to the construction office.
He had spent the morning dealing with lenders, attorneys, and threats. Now he walked into the familiar building where he had spent thousands of hours building a career.
The receptionist greeted him.
"Hey, Marcus. Daniel's in his office.""
"Thanks.""
He walked down the corridor.
The walls were covered with framed photographs of completed projects. A hospital extension. A warehouse complex.
A renovated school. The commercial building where Marcus had once worked through a storm to ensure a concrete pour was completed safely.
At the end of the corridor, Daniel's door stood open.
Daniel was seated behind his desk, reviewing blueprints.
He looked up and smiled.
"Marcus! I was just about to call you.""
Marcus stopped in the doorway.
"Why?""
Daniel's smile faded slightly.
"Everything okay?""
"I need to ask you something.""
Daniel leaned back.
"Sure.""
Marcus placed a copy of the email on the desk.
"Do you know Victor Hale?""
Daniel looked at the document.
For a fraction of a second, his expression became unreadable.
Then he shrugged.
"I've met a lot of investors. Why?""
"Because he says you introduced him to Jordan.""
Daniel's face hardened.
"Jordan's business?""
"Yes.""
Daniel pushed the document aside.
"Marcus, I did introduce Jordan to a financing contact. The kid needed help, and I thought I could point him toward someone legitimate.""
"Did you know Victor was demanding collateral against my house?""
"No.""
"Did you know my daughter's medical savings were being used?""
Daniel stared at him.
"Absolutely not.""
Marcus watched his face carefully.
"Did you attend a meeting with Victor, Jordan, and Vanessa?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't a company matter. It was a private investment discussion.""
"About my property?""
"I didn't know your property was involved.""
Marcus placed another document on the desk.
The loan application.
Daniel read the first page.
Then he looked up.
"Where did you get this?""
"From the financing records.""
"Marcus, this is serious.""
"I know.""
Daniel stood and walked toward the window.
"I need you to understand something. I introduced Jordan to Victor because I thought I was helping him. I had no idea they were going to use your name.""
Marcus studied him.
"Then why did Victor say you knew our family finances?""
Daniel turned.
"Because he asked me about the company. I told him you were financially responsible. I didn't give him your personal banking information.""
"Did you tell him about Nia's treatment account?""
"No.""
"Did you tell him about Eleanor's property?""
"No.""
Marcus held his gaze.
"Are you certain?""
Daniel's expression tightened.
"Of course I'm certain.""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Then you'll have no problem cooperating with the investigation.""
Daniel's face changed.
"What investigation?""
"The disputed loans. The account transfers. The property filings.""
Daniel looked toward the open doorway.
For the first time, he seemed less concerned about Marcus's questions than about who might overhear them.
"Marcus, we should discuss this privately.""
"We are discussing it privately.""
"I mean outside the office.""
"Why?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Because you don't understand what kind of people you're dealing with.""
Marcus felt a chill.
"Victor?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Victor is only a middleman.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"Then who is behind him?""
Daniel opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
Marcus saw the name.
*Victor Hale.*
Daniel rejected the call.
A message appeared immediately.
Daniel read it.
His face went pale.
Marcus held out his hand.
"Show me.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Marcus, go home.""
"Show me the message.""
"Please.""
The desperation in Daniel's voice stopped Marcus.
He had known the man for eleven years.
He had seen him negotiate million-dollar contracts without raising his voice. He had watched him confront angry clients, dismiss incompetent suppliers, and handle emergencies with the calmness of someone who always had a plan.
He had never seen Daniel frightened.
"What did Victor say?"" Marcus asked.
Daniel swallowed.
"He wants to know whether you've seen the documents.""
Marcus's blood went cold.
"Which documents?""
Daniel looked toward the window again.
Then he whispered, "The original authorization.""
Marcus stared at him.
"What original authorization?""
Daniel sat down heavily.
"The document that started all of this.""
Marcus's mind raced.
He had assumed the forged loan application was the beginning of the scheme. But Daniel's words suggested there was an earlier document—something that had given Victor access to information or created the appearance of authority.
"Who signed it?"" Marcus asked.
Daniel covered his face with both hands.
"I don't know.""
"Daniel.""
"I swear I don't know who signed it. Victor showed me a copy. He said everything was already authorized.""
"Authorized by whom?""
Daniel lowered his hands.
His eyes were red.
"That's what I was trying to find out.""
Marcus stared at him.
"You expect me to believe you introduced my stepson to a lender, attended a meeting about his financing, and never asked who authorized the money?""
"I thought Jordan was using his own assets.""
"Jordan has no assets.""
"I didn't know that!""
Marcus slammed his palm onto the desk.
"You're a financial partner in a construction company! You know how to read a balance sheet!""
Daniel flinched.
The room went silent.
Marcus drew a slow breath.
"Tell me everything you know.""
Daniel looked at him for a long time.
Then he opened a drawer and pulled out a thin folder.
"I kept copies of the emails because something didn't feel right.""
Marcus stared at the folder.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Victor?""
Daniel nodded.
"And someone else.""
He placed the folder on the desk.
Inside were printed emails, transaction summaries, and a single page bearing a scanned signature.
Marcus leaned forward.
His own name appeared at the bottom.
But this time, the document wasn't a loan application.
It was a consent form authorizing a third party to access certain financial records associated with the Reed family.
Marcus felt his heart pound.
He had never seen it before.
The date was nearly six months old.
And beneath his signature was the name of the person supposedly witnessing it.
*Vanessa Reed.*
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"Where did you get this?""
"Victor sent it to me after the first meeting.""
"Why?""
"He said he wanted me to confirm that you were the same Marcus Reed who owned the construction company.""
Marcus stared at the signature.
It looked disturbingly familiar.
But something was wrong.
The final stroke of the R was too short.
The signature lacked the small upward mark Marcus had added to the end of his name for years.
Someone had copied it from an older document.
"Did you verify it?""
"No. I assumed Victor had obtained it legally.""
Marcus looked at him.
"You assumed.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"I made a mistake.""
Marcus almost laughed.
Everyone had made mistakes.
Vanessa had made a mistake when she took Nia's money.
Jordan had made a mistake when he borrowed money he couldn't repay.
Daniel had made a mistake when he introduced them to Victor.
But the word had become a convenient shelter for people who wanted to avoid saying what they had actually done.
Marcus photographed the consent form and sent it to Elaine.
Then he looked at Daniel.
"You're going to provide every email, message, and record you have. And you're going to cooperate fully.""
Daniel nodded.
"I will.""
Marcus turned toward the door.
As he reached it, Daniel spoke again.
"Marcus, wait.""
He stopped.
"There is one thing you need to know about Vanessa.""
Marcus turned slowly.
Daniel's face was ashen.
"She wasn't the first person Victor approached.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Who was?""
Daniel swallowed.
Then he said, "Your wife was approached because someone inside your own family had already given Victor everything he needed.""
Marcus felt the room tilt.
"Who?""
May you like
Daniel looked down at the folder.
"I think you need to ask Vanessa what happened to her first husband.""
