Chapter 9: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

Naomi forgot how to breathe.

The abandoned research facility seemed to disappear around her.

The broken machines.

The old computers.

The frozen air.

None of it mattered.

Because standing in the doorway was the one person who should not have been there.

The one person she had spent twenty-two years mourning.

Her father.

Marcus Vale.

Alive.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Naomi had imagined this moment so many times.

In dreams.

In memories.

In the quiet hours when she wondered what his voice sounded like.

But every version ended the same way.

He was gone.

She never imagined he would be standing ten feet away.

Older.

Tired.

But real.

“Naomi.””

Her name sounded different when he said it in person.

Not through a recording.

Not through a screen.

Through the voice of the man who gave it to her.

She stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus’s expression broke.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You can’t be here.””

“I know it’s impossible.””

“You’re dead.””

The words came out like an accusation.

Marcus looked down.

“I know.””

Naomi felt anger rising beneath the shock.

A deep anger that had been waiting twenty-two years for somewhere to go.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Marcus took a step forward.

She immediately stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I deserve that.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her eyes filled.

“You don’t know what it was like.””

Marcus looked devastated.

“I know exactly what it was like.””

Naomi shook her head.

“You don’t.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was sixteen.””

The room went quiet.

“I needed you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“I waited for you.””

“I know.””

“I thought you left me.””

A tear fell.

“And every single year after that, I wondered why I wasn’t enough for you to stay.””

Marcus looked like the words physically hurt him.

“Naomi…”

“No.””

She wiped her face.

“You don’t get to come back and act like nothing happened.””

“I’m not.””

“Then explain.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I will.””

He walked toward an old chair near the wall and sat down.

For the first time, Naomi noticed how fragile he looked.

Not like the powerful inventor from the recording.

Not like the legendary man behind Skybridge’s foundation.

Just a father who had missed half his daughter’s life.

“I wanted to come back.””

Naomi stayed standing.

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””

“Who?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Richard.””

Her expression hardened.

“I knew it.””

“No.””

The answer surprised her.

Marcus shook his head.

“Richard was part of the reason.””

“Part?””

“Yes.””

Naomi frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked toward the old computers.

“It means the truth is worse than one person.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Explain.””

Marcus took a breath.

“After the accident, Richard found me alive.””

Naomi nodded.

“He told me people believed I was dead.””

“Yes.””

“He told me you were safer without me.””

Naomi’s jaw tightened.

“Because of the people after your research.””

Marcus nodded.

“But that wasn’t the whole truth.””

“What else?””

Marcus looked away.

“Richard was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That I would destroy everything trying to expose the people responsible.””

Naomi stared.

“You mean he thought he was protecting you.””

“Yes.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Everyone loves that word.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

“Protecting.””

She walked closer.

“Everyone says it.””

Her voice grew stronger.

“Evelyn protected me by hiding my father.””

“Richard protected me by hiding the truth.””

“You protected me by disappearing.””

Marcus lowered his head.

Naomi swallowed.

“Do you understand what that feels like?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Her eyes met his.

“Because you all made choices for me.””

The words stayed in the room.

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said something she never expected.

“You’re right.””

Naomi froze.

“I was wrong.””

The honesty stopped her.

Marcus continued.

“I spent twenty-two years believing I was sacrificing myself for you.””

He looked at his hands.

“But I was also taking away your choice.””

Naomi said nothing.

“I should have trusted you.””

The anger didn’t disappear.

But something shifted.

Because for the first time, someone admitted it.

No excuses.

No explanations.

Just regret.

Marcus stood.

“I need to show you something.””

“What?””

He walked to the computer.

“Project Evergreen wasn’t created to monitor you.””

Naomi frowned.

“Then what was it?””

Marcus typed a password.

The screen opened.

A series of documents appeared.

*EVERGREEN: LEGACY PROTECTION PROGRAM*

Marcus pointed.

“This was created to protect your father’s work.””

Naomi stared.

“Not me?””

“Both.””

He opened another file.

Her name appeared.

But beneath it was something else.

*INHERITANCE AUTHORIZATION*

Naomi looked confused.

“What is this?””

Marcus turned.

“Your mother’s.””

Naomi froze.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

Marcus clicked another document.

A video appeared.

A woman appeared on screen.

Naomi stopped breathing.

She had only a few photographs of her mother.

But this was different.

Moving.

Alive.

“Hello, Naomi.””

Her mother’s voice filled the room.

Naomi covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“If you’re seeing this, then something happened that your father and I hoped would never happen.””

Her mother looked directly at the camera.

“You are old enough now to know the truth.””

Naomi stared.

“I wasn’t just your mother.””

A pause.

“I was one of the original architects of Skybridge.””

Naomi looked at Marcus.

He nodded.

Her mother continued.

“The company was never supposed to become what it became.””

A document appeared behind her.

“The technology was designed to make aviation safer.””

Another document appeared.

“Then people saw its value.””

Naomi listened.

“The wrong people wanted control.””

Her mother’s expression became serious.

“And when we refused, they targeted us.””

Naomi whispered:

“Who?””

The recording continued.

“Some of them are obvious.””

A pause.

“Some of them are not.””

Her mother looked down.

“The greatest danger is always the person who convinces you they are protecting you.””

Naomi felt a chill.

The same warning.

Again.

The video ended.

The computer returned to the main screen.

Marcus looked at her.

“Your mother left another message.””

“For who?””

“For you.””

Naomi stepped closer.

The file opened.

A final video appeared.

This time, it wasn’t old.

It was recent.

Recorded only days ago.

Naomi’s blood ran cold.

Because her mother looked older.

Not young.

Not frozen in time.

Alive.

Her mother smiled sadly.

“Naomi.””

The room disappeared.

“No…”

Her mother continued.

“I know this is impossible for you to understand.””

Naomi couldn’t move.

“But there is one thing you need to know.””

Her mother looked directly into the camera.

“I never died either.””

The video paused.

Naomi stared.

The impossible had happened twice.

Her father.

Now her mother.

Then the screen changed.

A final line appeared.

*LIVE TRANSMISSION AVAILABLE.*

Marcus looked at Naomi.

“She’s here.””

Naomi turned slowly.

“Where?””

Before Marcus could answer, the facility lights went out.

Darkness filled the room.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone was approaching.

Marcus moved in front of Naomi.

She noticed.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

He still protected her.

The footsteps stopped.

A voice spoke from the darkness.

“Marcus.””

Naomi froze.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it thousands of times.

In meetings.

At family dinners.

In moments when she needed advice.

The person stepped into the light.

Richard Caldwell.

But he wasn’t alone.

Standing beside him was a woman Naomi had only seen in photographs.

Her mother.

Richard looked at Naomi.

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

Naomi stared.

Her mind couldn’t process it.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her uncle.

All standing in the same room.

Alive.

The family she thought she lost.

The family she thought had betrayed her.

Richard looked at Marcus.

“You finally told her.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Richard sighed.

“Then it’s time.””

Naomi looked between them.

“Time for what?””

Nobody answered.

Then her mother stepped forward.

And whispered:

“Time for you to learn why we disappeared.””

She looked at Naomi with tears in her eyes.

“Because the person who ordered our deaths…”

A pause.

“The person who has controlled Skybridge from the beginning…”

Naomi held her breath.

Her mother finished:

“Is the person you trusted most.””

The room went silent.

And then Naomi’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

From the Skybridge board.

One name.

The new acting CEO.

*Emily Carter.*

May you like

And beneath it:

*She has taken control of the company.*
