Chapter 9: The Truth They Buried
Rebecca agreed to meet us at midnight.
Not at her house.
Not at a café.
Not anywhere public.
She chose an abandoned church on the edge of town.
When Daniel heard the location, his face changed.
“You know that place?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
He looked away.
“I used to go there with Dr. Evans.””
The answer made my stomach twist.
Another connection.
Another hidden piece.
By now, every road seemed to lead back to the same night.
The night Maya was born.
I sat in the passenger seat while Daniel drove.
Neither of us spoke.
There was too much between us.
Too many secrets.
Too many questions.
Finally, I broke the silence.
“Did you love me when you married me?””
His hands tightened around the steering wheel.
The question clearly hurt him.
“Yes.””
“Did you love Maya?””
He looked at me immediately.
“With everything I have.””
I looked out the window.
“Then why did you let me live a lie?””
His voice was quiet.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing the two people who mattered most to me.””
I swallowed.
“You should have trusted me enough to tell me.””
“I know.””
The simplicity of his answer hurt.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just regret.
When we arrived, the old church stood beneath the moonlight.
The windows were broken.
The wooden doors were covered in dust.
It looked like a place everyone had forgotten.
But someone was waiting.
Rebecca stepped out from the shadows.
She looked older than the woman in the photograph.
Tired.
Like someone who had spent years running from something.
Her eyes went directly to me.
“Naomi.””
I stopped.
Hearing my name from a stranger felt strange.
“How do you know me?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Because he told me everything.””
My heart tightened.
“You knew Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“Were you involved with the hospital?””
Rebecca looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What happened?””
She took a deep breath.
“Before I explain, you need to understand one thing.””
“What?””
“Maya was never an accident.””
I felt my body tense.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca stepped closer.
“It means your daughter was born because someone made a choice.””
“Whose choice?””
“Mine.””
The words stunned me.
Daniel looked shocked.
“You never told us that.””
Rebecca looked at him sadly.
“You never asked the right question.””
I stared between them.
“What did you do?””
Rebecca’s eyes filled.
“I helped Dr. Evans.””
The name made my chest tighten.
“With what?””
She looked at the abandoned church around us.
“With a treatment that should never have happened.””
I frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Rebecca took a small folder from her bag.
“I was Dr. Evans’s research assistant.””
She opened it.
Inside were medical documents.
“Your condition was considered impossible.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“You were told you couldn’t have children naturally.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
“But that wasn’t the full truth.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“You were not infertile.””
The words made no sense.
“What?””
“You had been misdiagnosed.””
My heart started racing.
“By who?””
Rebecca looked down.
“By the same people who later tried to hide the records.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because there was money involved.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What are you saying?””
Rebecca opened the folder.
“Dr. Evans discovered that several patients had been deliberately misdiagnosed.””
The silence was heavy.
“They were being pushed into expensive treatments.””
My hands shook.
“So Maya…”
“Maya was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That the original diagnosis was wrong.””
I stared at her.
“Then why hide her?””
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“Because after Maya was born, Dr. Evans discovered something worse.””
“What?””
Rebecca’s voice dropped.
“The treatment records were connected to another patient.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
My breath caught.
“Lily?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Vanessa was another patient.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
“She received the same treatment.””
The world seemed to stop.
“Then why does everyone think the babies were connected?””
Rebecca looked at the ground.
“Because someone wanted them to be.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Rebecca turned toward him.
“You remember the night the records changed.””
“Yes.””
“You thought it was about the babies.””
Daniel froze.
“It wasn’t.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“It was about the doctors.””
My mind raced.
“The babies were never switched?””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No.””
The answer hit me harder than I expected.
For years, everyone had been talking about mistakes.
Missing children.
Changed records.
But the truth was different.
“What happened then?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“Two families were victims of the same lie.””
I looked at her.
“Explain.””
“Dr. Evans discovered that the hospital was hiding medical errors. When he threatened to expose them, they tried to destroy his work.””
“By changing records?””
“Yes.””
“But why involve Maya?””
“Because Maya’s birth was the strongest evidence.””
Rebecca pointed to the documents.
“Your pregnancy proved the diagnosis was false.””
I looked at the papers.
“And Lily?””
“She was proof too.””
My chest tightened.
“Vanessa’s daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Vanessa think Maya was taken from her?””
Rebecca closed her eyes.
“Because someone made her believe that.””
“Who?””
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“Your father.””
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid.””
Everyone kept saying that.
Afraid.
Protecting.
Secrets.
But now I needed the reason.
“What was he afraid of?””
Rebecca’s voice became softer.
“He was afraid you would discover the truth about your own family.””
I shook my head.
“My family?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Your father knew about the hospital. He knew about the misdiagnosis. He knew Dr. Evans was trying to expose everything.””
“And?””
“He made a deal.””
“With who?””
Rebecca looked away.
“With the people running the hospital.””
My hands curled.
“What did he trade?””
Rebecca hesitated.
Then answered:
“Silence.””
The word echoed.
“He chose to protect the family name instead of the truth.””
I felt tears forming.
“My mother knew.””
“Yes.””
“And Claire?””
“She found out later.””
“And Daniel?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“He tried to fix what your father broke.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I failed.””
Rebecca shook her head.
“No. You protected Maya.””
I looked at her.
“But you said Maya was never the child someone wanted to hide.””
Rebecca nodded.
“Because she wasn’t.””
“Then why did Vanessa attack her?””
Rebecca’s expression changed.
“Because Vanessa didn’t know the truth.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Then who sent her the letter?””
Rebecca became silent.
Too silent.
“Rebecca.””
She looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
A lie.
I could feel it.
“You do.””
She looked away.
“Tell me.””
Rebecca’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because if I tell you, you will understand why everyone stayed quiet.””
“Why?””
She handed me one final document.
“This was found after Dr. Evans disappeared.””
I opened it.
The page contained a single sentence.
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
*The child Naomi gave birth to was not the only life changed that night.*
Below it was another line.
*The second child was never registered.*
I looked up.
“What does this mean?””
Rebecca whispered:
“There were not two babies involved.””
My heart stopped.
“There were three.””
The wind moved through the broken windows.
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“What are you saying?””
Rebecca’s eyes moved to me.
“The hospital didn’t hide Maya and Lily.””
A pause.
“They hid a third child.””
My hands trembled.
“Who?””
Rebecca took a step back.
And the fear in her face told me the answer was something none of us were ready for.
“The child who was erased…”
May you like
She swallowed.
“…was yours.””
