Chapter 8: The Doctor Who Held the Missing Piece

The name stayed in my mind long after I left Claire’s house.

Dr. Evans.

Two words.

But they felt heavier than everything else I had discovered.

I sat in my car for nearly twenty minutes without starting the engine.

My hands rested on the steering wheel.

My phone sat beside me.

Daniel’s message was still open.

*Don’t listen to Claire. She’s the reason your mother died afraid.*

Claire had warned me not to ask about Dr. Evans.

Daniel had warned me not to trust Claire.

Everyone had a warning.

Everyone had a secret.

And somehow, I was the only person who had been living in the dark.

I drove home slowly.

Not because I was afraid of the road.

Because I was afraid of what I would find when I walked through my own front door.

Daniel was in the kitchen when I arrived.

He looked up immediately.

“You saw Claire.””

I placed my keys on the counter.

“Yes.””

He studied my face.

“What did she tell you?””

I almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because I finally noticed something.

He never asked if I was okay.

He asked what she told me.

“You already know.””

His expression changed.

“Naomi.””

“Who is Dr. Evans?””

The silence was instant.

A normal person would have looked confused.

A normal person would have asked, “Who?””

Daniel didn’t.

He just stood there.

Like he had been waiting for this question for years.

“Where did you hear that name?””

My heart sank.

“You know him.””

Daniel looked away.

“Naomi…”

“Answer me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word hurt.

Not because of the doctor.

Because of how easy it was for him to admit knowing.

“What was his role?””

Daniel sat down.

“I need you to understand something.””

“No.””

My voice was sharp.

“I don’t need another explanation about why I should wait.””

He looked at me.

“I need the truth.””

A long pause.

Then he nodded.

“Dr. Evans was the fertility specialist who treated you.””

My throat tightened.

The memories came back.

The small office.

The medical tests.

The endless appointments.

The hope and disappointment.

I had always believed Maya was a miracle.

But now I wondered if she was something else.

“Why didn’t you tell me his name?””

“Because I didn’t want you remembering that time.””

“Why?””

“Because you were hurting.””

I stared at him.

“And now?””

“Now you’re hurting because I lied.””

That honesty almost made it worse.

“Did Dr. Evans do something wrong?””

Daniel looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don’t know?””

“He disappeared before we could find out everything.””

“Like the nurse?””

“Yes.””

The answer made my stomach twist.

“How many people disappeared after Maya was born?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He rubbed his face.

“Three.””

I froze.

“Three?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“Dr. Evans. Nurse Caroline. And the hospital administrator.””

I stared at him.

“And nobody thought that was strange?””

“We did.””

“Who is we?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother. Claire. Me.””

I stepped back.

“You were all investigating?””

“Yes.””

“Without me?””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

My eyes filled.

I couldn’t believe it.

The people I trusted most had formed a circle around me.

And I had been standing outside it.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice softened.

“Because every time we got close to the truth, something happened.””

“What kind of things?””

He hesitated.

“Threats.””

The room went quiet.

“Against who?””

“Your mother first.””

My breath caught.

“She received threatening messages?””

“Yes.””

“And she never told me?””

“She was trying to protect you.””

I laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Protecting someone means standing beside them.””

My voice broke.

“Not building a wall and leaving them alone behind it.””

Daniel looked down.

He had no answer.

I walked toward the living room.

On the shelf was a picture of Maya.

Seven years old.

Missing front tooth.

Huge smile.

Holding a trophy from a school reading contest.

I touched the frame.

“Tell me about Dr. Evans.””

Daniel was quiet for a moment.

Then he began.

“After years of trying to have a child, we went to him.””

I nodded.

“I remember.””

“He was one of the best specialists in the area.””

“What happened?””

“He suggested a treatment.””

“What kind?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“A procedure that was experimental at the time.””

My stomach tightened.

“Experimental?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know that?””

“I knew it was new.””

“And you agreed?””

“We wanted a baby.””

The words were simple.

Painfully simple.

Because I remembered.

I remembered wanting Maya so badly that fear became something I ignored.

“What does this have to do with Lily?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“But you think it does.””

He was silent.

That was enough.

I sat down.

“Tell me the truth about the hospital.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“The night Maya was born, there was a problem.””

“What problem?””

“The records showed something impossible.””

“What?””

“The treatment information didn’t match.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone changed the file after the procedure.””

My heart began beating faster.

“Changed it to what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“To hide who was involved.””

“Who was involved?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why does everyone keep acting like they know?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Because everyone knows a different piece.””

He walked to the cabinet and removed another folder.

“This is everything I collected.””

Inside were emails, notes, and documents.

At the bottom was a photograph.

I picked it up.

A group of people outside the hospital.

Dr. Evans.

Nurse Caroline.

The administrator.

My mother.

Claire.

And Daniel.

I stared at it.

“When was this taken?””

“The night before Maya was born.””

My eyes moved across the picture.

Then stopped.

Someone else was standing in the background.

A person partially hidden behind the group.

Someone holding a folder.

I looked closer.

The face was blurry.

But I recognized the coat.

I recognized the necklace.

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

I pointed.

“Who is that?””

His face changed.

Because he recognized the person too.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is it?””

Daniel took the picture from my hand.

His fingers shook.

“That’s…”

“Say it.””

He stared at the photo.

Then whispered:

“That’s Claire’s sister.””

I frowned.

“Claire doesn’t have a sister.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She told you she didn’t.””

A cold wave moved through me.

Because I remembered.

Claire had always said she grew up alone.

No siblings.

No close family.

I looked at the picture again.

The hidden woman.

The missing sister.

The person who had been standing at the hospital before Maya was born.

“Who is she?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Her name is Rebecca.””

“Where is she now?””

He looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

The answer felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Another missing person.

Another secret.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman spoke immediately.

“Naomi?””

My blood went cold.

I knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

“Who is this?””

The woman breathed shakily.

“You need to stop looking for answers.””

I stood.

“Rebecca?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Where are you?””

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“I’m the only person who can tell you why Maya was chosen.””

I gripped the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Her voice trembled.

“It means Vanessa was wrong.””

I froze.

“About what?””

The line became filled with static.

Then Rebecca said the words that changed everything.

“Maya was never the child someone wanted to hide.””

A pause.

“She was the child someone wanted to protect.””

The call ended.

I looked at Daniel.

And for the first time, he looked just as afraid as I was.

Because we both realized the same thing.

We had spent years searching for who stole the truth.

May you like

But we had never asked the most important question.

Who was the truth being protected from?
