Chapter 6: The General’s Warning
General Victor Hale walked into Madison’s living room like he owned the place.
Maybe he believed he did.
People like Hale rarely entered rooms.
They occupied them.
He carried no weapon.
No visible threat.
Just confidence.
The kind that came from decades of believing consequences belonged to everyone else.
Madison stared at him.
“General Hale?””
He smiled politely.
“Mrs. Turner.””
The way he said her name made my skin crawl.
Too familiar.
Too controlled.
I stepped between them.
“How did you get inside?””
Hale looked at me.
“Commander Morgan.””
He gave a small nod.
“Congratulations on your promotion.””
I didn’t move.
“You didn’t answer my question.””
His smile faded slightly.
“I came because you’re in danger.””
I almost laughed.
“From who?””
His eyes shifted toward the note in my hand.
“You know.””
“No.””
I held his gaze.
“I know you were involved.””
The room went silent.
Madison looked between us.
“What does that mean?””
Hale ignored her.
“Rachel, you have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“I know enough.””
“Do you?””
He stepped closer.
“Do you know why Turner stayed silent?””
I said nothing.
“Do you know why your career was sacrificed?””
I watched him carefully.
“You’re about to tell me.””
His expression changed.
For the first time, the confidence slipped.
“Jason Turner was never the threat.””
“Then you are?””
The silence answered.
Hale looked annoyed.
Not afraid.
Annoyed.
Like I had broken an unspoken rule by saying the obvious.
“You always were difficult,” he said.
Madison looked at him.
“What are you talking about?””
Hale turned.
“Your sister was involved in classified operations beyond her clearance.””
My head snapped toward him.
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why was your name on those documents?””
“Because someone forged it.””
“And you know who?””
I didn’t answer.
Because the truth was standing in front of me.
Hale smiled slightly.
“Exactly.””
He walked toward the table.
“Jason Turner protected you because he knew what would happen if you started asking questions.””
“Questions about you?””
His expression hardened.
“Questions about a system bigger than both of us.””
I almost believed him.
That was the terrifying part.
Because people like Hale rarely lied completely.
They mixed truth with deception.
Enough truth to make you doubt yourself.
Enough deception to keep control.
My phone buzzed.
A secure message.
I checked it.
Unknown sender.
One sentence.
I HAVE ELENA.
My blood went cold.
Hale watched my reaction.
“You found her.””
I looked up.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“Where is she?””
He smiled.
“There’s the problem, Rachel.””
He leaned forward.
“You’re still thinking like a soldier.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you’re looking for an enemy.””
He pointed at the note.
“But the real danger is that you already know one.””
Madison stepped forward.
“Stop talking in riddles.””
Hale looked at her.
“You should ask your husband why he never told you about Operation Silver Dawn.””
Madison froze.
“What is that?””
I looked at Hale.
“You’re trying to distract us.””
“No.””
He reached into his coat.
My hand immediately moved toward my sidearm.
He noticed.
And smiled.
“Still careful.””
He removed a folder.
Placed it on the table.
“Open it.””
I didn’t.
“What is it?””
“The truth about Jason Turner.””
I stared.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
He looked toward the door.
“Because you shouldn’t.””
That surprised me.
Then his expression changed.
“Rachel, listen carefully.””
His voice became serious.
“Jason didn’t destroy your career.””
A pause.
“He destroyed the evidence.””
My heart stopped.
“What evidence?””
Hale looked at me.
“The evidence proving you were never the target.””
Madison whispered:
“Then who was?””
Before Hale could answer, every light in the house went out.
The room fell into darkness.
A second later, glass shattered upstairs.
Someone had broken in.
Hale immediately moved.
Not like a politician.
Like a soldier.
He grabbed Madison and pulled her away from the window.
I drew my weapon.
The sound of footsteps moved through the house.
One person.
Maybe two.
Then a voice echoed from the hallway.
“Commander Morgan.””
I recognized it.
Jason.
But his voice sounded different.
Urgent.
Desperate.
“Don’t trust Hale.””
The room froze.
Because General Hale was standing right beside me.
And Jason Turner was standing in the doorway holding a weapon.
Pointed directly at him.
Then Jason said the words that changed everything.
“General Hale was never investigating the operation.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“He was running it.””
