Chapter 9: The Brother Who Knew Too Much
The message on my phone felt heavier than the entire world.
*“Don’t trust your brother.””*
I stared at those five words.
Then I looked up.
Mark was standing across from me.
My older brother.
The man who taught me how to ride a bike.
The man who sat beside me after my wife died.
The man who held Emily at the funeral when I couldn’t stop crying.
The man I called when I didn’t know how to be a single father.
And now his name was sitting in the middle of everything.
My first instinct was to reject it.
To protect him.
Because that was what family did.
But then I remembered something.
Family was also where secrets hid the longest.
“Daniel?””
Mark’s voice pulled me back.
“What?””
“You’re looking at me like I did something.””
I looked at my phone.
Then at him.
“Did you?””
His face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
A small reaction.
But I saw it.
“Did I do what?””
“Visit my wife the night before she died.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
“You told me you visited once.””
“I did.””
“When?””
Mark hesitated.
“Earlier that evening.””
“Earlier?””
“Yes.””
“Claire said there was a visitor that night.””
“There were many people there.””
“But you were there late.””
His eyes moved away.
That was enough.
“Mark.””
He sighed.
“I didn’t want to tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because it would only hurt you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His expression tightened.
“What?””
“That they were protecting me.””
I held up the letter.
“My wife wrote a warning. My mother hid things. Rebecca pretended to be someone she wasn’t. And now you’re telling me you kept secrets because you wanted to protect me?””
Mark looked down.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You know how it feels.””
The room went silent.
Emily moved closer to me.
She didn’t say anything.
She didn’t need to.
I could feel her fear.
I lowered my voice.
“Tell me the truth.””
Mark looked at Rebecca.
Then at my mother.
Then back at me.
“I went to the hospital because your wife called me.””
My chest tightened.
“She called you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“She sounded scared.””
“What did she say?””
Mark rubbed his hands together.
“She asked me to come alone.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I don’t.””
I studied his face.
I wanted to believe him.
I really did.
But trust was no longer something I could give away.
Not after today.
“What happened when you got there?””
Mark looked toward the window.
“I found her awake.””
My breath caught.
“She was supposed to be sleeping.””
“I know.””
“She talked to you?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Mark’s eyes became wet.
“She asked me to promise something.””
“What?””
“That I would never let anyone separate you and Emily.””
The words hit me.
Because they sounded exactly like her.
But something still bothered me.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Mark closed his eyes.
“Because she asked me not to.””
I stared.
“Of course she did.””
“Daniel.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done with promises that leave me standing in the dark.””
Mark looked hurt.
But I didn’t care.
Not anymore.
“What else did she tell you?””
He didn’t answer.
“Mark.””
“She told me someone had been watching your family.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
“She didn’t know.””
“Then why did she think it was dangerous?””
“Because someone knew things they shouldn’t know.””
“Like what?””
Mark looked at Emily.
“Things about her.””
My hands clenched.
“What things?””
“She said someone had information about Emily’s behavior, her fears, her nightmares.””
I looked at my daughter.
“How?””
“That was what she was trying to find out.””
“Did she think it was you?””
Mark looked shocked.
“No.””
“Did she mention your name?””
“No.””
“Then why is someone warning me about you?””
Mark stared at my phone.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Rebecca quietly said:
“Maybe because someone wants us to turn against each other.””
I looked at her.
“You think someone sent the message?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it worked.””
The words landed hard.
She was right.
The message had done exactly what someone wanted.
It made me suspicious.
It made me look away from the real question.
Who benefited from everyone blaming each other?
My wife’s letter.
The false records.
The treatment center.
The wedding note.
Every piece created one thing.
Chaos.
And while we were fighting, someone was hidden.
I looked at Claire’s number.
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“Can you access the hospital records?””
“I can.””
“Find out who contacted the treatment center.””
There was silence.
Then:
“Daniel, I already did.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I found the name.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Who?””
Claire’s voice became careful.
“The request was made under a family authorization.””
My mother whispered:
“What?””
“Whose authorization?””
Claire paused.
Then answered:
“Daniel Carter.””
The room froze.
My name.
My hands went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“I never signed anything.””
“The signature was copied.””
My eyes moved toward the box.
The documents.
The files.
Someone had forged my name.
“Who submitted it?””
Claire said:
“The paperwork was delivered by someone claiming to act on your behalf.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Then:
“Your brother.””
Everyone turned toward Mark.
His face went white.
“No.””
My voice was barely audible.
“Mark.””
“I didn’t.””
“Claire said—”
“I didn’t!””
For the first time, Mark looked angry.
Not defensive.
Desperate.
“I swear to you, Daniel, I never submitted anything.””
“Then why is your name connected?””
“I don’t know.””
“Why were you involved?””
“I wasn’t.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
Mark’s breathing became heavier.
“I can’t.””
Those three words destroyed whatever trust remained.
“You can’t?””
“Because I don’t know how to explain it.””
“Try.””
Mark looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“I found the paperwork.””
“When?””
“After your wife died.””
“Where?””
“In her things.””
My heart stopped.
“You had my wife’s things?””
“She gave me a box.””
“Why?””
“She said if anything happened, I needed to keep it safe.””
“Did you open it?””
“No.””
“Then how did you know about the paperwork?””
Mark looked down.
“Because someone else did.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Mark’s voice broke.
“Your mother.””
Everyone froze.
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Mark, don’t do this.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Mark wiped his face.
“After the funeral, Mom asked me if I found anything from your wife.””
My mother whispered:
“Because I was worried.””
“You were searching through her things.””
“I was trying to understand.””
“Understand what?””
My mother looked at me.
“I thought your wife was hiding something.””
The anger returned.
“You thought my dying wife was hiding something?””
“She was.””
“About what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Mark said:
“About Emily’s biological father.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had been taken away.
“What?””
Rebecca looked shocked.
Evelyn whispered:
“No.””
Mark looked at me.
“I didn’t know if it was true.””
“True?””
My voice shook.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your wife had a file.””
“What file?””
“About Emily’s birth.””
I stared.
Emily.
My daughter.
My little girl.
The child I raised since the day she was born.
The child who called me Daddy.
“What was in it?””
Mark looked devastated.
“I don’t know.””
“Then why bring it up?””
“Because your mother found it.””
I turned slowly.
My mother looked away.
“Mom.””
She started crying.
“Daniel…”
“What was in the file?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I don’t.””
“Then what did you do?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
Her voice broke.
“I gave it to Mark.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because I thought he should know.””
I looked at Mark.
“Did you open it?””
He hesitated.
A second too long.
That was the answer.
“Mark.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“What did you find?””
He looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“I found out your wife had been trying to protect you from something.””
“What?””
He swallowed.
“She knew someone might question your relationship with Emily.””
My stomach turned.
“Why?””
Mark looked at the floor.
“Because someone had been looking for Emily’s biological father.””
The room went silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
Another message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was a photo attached.
I opened it.
A hospital document.
A birth record.
At the bottom was a signature.
My wife’s signature.
And beside it…
A name I had never seen before.
I stared at the screen.
Because beneath the name was one sentence.
*“Daniel, you deserve to know the truth about the daughter you raised.””*
I looked at Emily.
My daughter.
The little girl holding my hand.
The little girl who had just lost her mother.
And suddenly, the final secret wasn’t about who tried to take her away.
It was about why everyone had been trying to protect her.
I looked at Rebecca.
She was crying.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My voice shook.
“Find out what?””
She looked at the document.
Then whispered:
“That your wife never told you…”
May you like
A pause.
“…because she was afraid you would stop loving Emily.””
