Chapter 8: The Truth Lena Was Trying To Hide
I couldn’t breathe.
Not because of fear.
Because of confusion.
Everything I thought I knew about my life had been turned upside down so many times that I no longer knew which direction was reality.
Lena was on the phone.
The man who claimed to be behind everything was beside her.
Michael’s journal said my wife’s name.
And yet…
The moment I heard Lena’s voice, all I could think about was finding her.
Not blaming her.
Not judging her.
Finding her.
Because love is a strange thing.
Even when someone breaks your trust, a part of you still remembers every reason you trusted them in the first place.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
My voice sounded different.
Colder.
Older.
Lena didn’t answer immediately.
“Daniel…”
“Where are you?””
The man beside her laughed softly.
“You really do care about her.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who are you?””
“You know who I am.””
“No.””
I looked at Victor.
Then Jasmine.
Neither of them moved.
“You keep saying that,” the man said.
“Because it’s true.””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Ethan Reynolds.””
Michael’s brother.
The name landed like a weight.
I closed my eyes.
“Where is Lena?””
“She’s safe.””
“Safe with you?””
Ethan laughed.
“Interesting choice of words.””
“Let her go.””
Silence.
Then Lena spoke.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I froze.
There was something in her voice.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Desperation.
“Are you hurt?””
“No.””
“Are you being forced to say that?””
“No.””
Her answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
“Then tell me what’s happening.””
She was quiet.
Then Ethan spoke again.
“Your wife has been protecting you from the beginning.””
I almost laughed.
“Protecting me?””
I looked at the journal.
“Is that what we’re calling it?””
Lena went silent.
And that silence hurt.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No more.””
I walked away from Victor and Jasmine.
I needed space.
I needed to hear her without everyone else watching.
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You hid Michael.””
“I know.””
“You knew something was wrong.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
A long pause.
Then Lena said:
“Because I was scared.””
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
“Of what?””
“Of losing you.””
I looked down.
“Lena, you already did.””
The silence afterward was painful.
I heard her breathing.
Then:
“I never wanted this life for you.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means I never wanted you involved.””
“But I am.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Ethan interrupted.
“She needs to tell you everything.””
I hated how calm he sounded.
Like this was some conversation happening at a dinner table.
Not my entire life collapsing.
“Why should I trust you?””
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
“I’m not asking you to trust me.””
“Then what do you want?””
“The same thing Michael wanted.””
“And what was that?””
“The truth.””
I looked at the journal.
“What truth?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Lena did.
“Daniel…”
I waited.
“The photograph.””
My stomach tightened.
“What about it?””
“I didn’t find you by accident.””
I stopped moving.
The world seemed to go quiet.
“What?””
“When I saw you at the coffee shop…”
She stopped.
I felt sick.
“You were watching me?””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
“How long?””
“Before we met?””
“Yes.””
Silence.
“Six months.””
I felt something break inside me.
Six months.
She had known me.
Watched me.
Before I even knew her name.
“Why?””
Lena started crying.
“I needed to know who you were.””
“Why?””
“Because Michael told me about you.””
I stared at the phone.
“What?””
“He found you first.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“He knew me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you were the only person who could help.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“I was just a guy working at a warehouse.””
“That’s why.””
I said nothing.
Lena continued.
“You weren’t connected to anyone.””
“You didn’t have money.””
“You didn’t have power.””
“You didn’t have anything they could use against you.””
Her voice broke.
“You were just good.””
I closed my eyes.
The words should have comforted me.
Instead, they hurt.
Because they meant my entire relationship started with a secret.
“Was our first date real?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Was falling in love with me real?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because by the time I realized I loved you…”
She stopped.
“Because by then, it was too late.””
“Too late?””
“Because anyone close to me became a target.””
I looked toward Victor.
Then Jasmine.
“Michael.””
“Yes.””
“Jasmine.””
“Yes.””
“And me.””
Silence.
“Yes.””
I sat down on the curb.
The strength left my body.
All these years.
I thought Jasmine was the problem.
I thought she was jealous.
I thought she hated seeing Lena happy.
Maybe she did.
But maybe she was also afraid.
“What happened to Michael?””
Lena didn’t answer.
Ethan did.
“He discovered the people behind the fraud.””
“What people?””
“Our father’s company.””
I froze.
“What?””
Ethan continued.
“Michael found evidence that executives were stealing money and hiding it through fake accounts.””
“And you?””
“I investigated after he disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew he wasn’t the kind of person who would run.””
I looked at the journal.
“Then why did everyone think he left?””
“Because someone made it look that way.””
“Who?””
Silence.
Then Ethan said:
“Someone close to him.””
My jaw tightened.
“Lena?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
I froze.
“What?””
“No.””
Ethan sounded certain.
“Lena was involved, but she wasn’t the one who caused Michael’s disappearance.””
I looked at the journal again.
The page with Lena’s name.
“Then why did Michael write her name?””
“Because Michael knew she was hiding something.””
“What?””
“The reason she came to you.””
My stomach dropped.
I closed my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
Lena started crying harder.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me.””
“I wasn’t only looking for someone Michael trusted.””
I waited.
“I was looking for someone who could keep the evidence safe.””
The words hurt.
Because there it was.
The truth I had been avoiding.
Maybe she loved me.
Maybe she chose me.
But she also needed me.
“I was a hiding place.””
“No.””
Her answer was immediate.
“You were never just that.””
“But I was part of the plan.””
“Yes.””
She whispered.
“And I hate myself for that.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because I wanted to be angry.
I deserved to be angry.
But hearing her admit it made it harder.
“Where is the evidence?””
A pause.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“Do you still have the notebook?””
I looked at it.
“Yes.””
“Then you have the answer.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The notebook isn’t the evidence.””
I looked confused.
“Then what is?””
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“The person who wrote it.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
A silence.
Then Lena whispered:
“Michael is alive.””
Everything stopped.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t think.
I just stared.
The parking lot.
The cars.
The people walking past.
None of it felt real.
“What did you say?””
Lena was crying.
“Michael is alive.””
“No.””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
I stood up.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You told me he was gone.””
“I thought he was.””
“You said nobody knew where he went.””
“I didn’t know.””
“You said he was dead.””
“I never said that.””
I stopped.
Because she was right.
She never said dead.
Everyone else did.
The police.
The rumors.
The assumptions.
But Lena never said the words.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan spoke.
“He’s closer than you think.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, the call ended.
I immediately called back.
Disconnected.
Again.
Disconnected.
Victor walked toward me.
“What happened?””
I looked at him.
My face must have shown everything.
Because his expression changed.
“What did they tell you?””
My voice barely worked.
“Michael is alive.””
Jasmine dropped the box.
The notebook fell onto the ground.
And for the first time…
Nobody looked shocked.
They looked afraid.
Because they already knew.
I stared at them.
“You knew.””
Neither answered.
“You knew he was alive.””
Jasmine’s eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“We thought he was coming back.””
The world tilted.
“Coming back?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“When?””
Her lips trembled.
Then she said the one thing that made my blood turn cold.
“Tonight.””
I looked around the parking lot.
At the strangers walking by.
At the buildings.
At the streets.
At the world I thought I understood.
Then my phone buzzed.
One final message.
From an unknown number.
A picture.
No words.
I opened it.
And there he was.
Michael Reynolds.
Older.
Tired.
Standing in front of my house.
My house.
The place my father built.
The place my mother planted roses.
The place where Lena and I had built our life.
May you like
And underneath the picture was one sentence.
*Daniel, I need you to know the truth before Lena does what she came back to finish.*
