Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Gone
The black SUV stopped ten feet away from us.
The engine kept running.
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Jasmine.
Not the person inside the vehicle.
The entire parking lot felt frozen.
I looked at Jasmine.
The woman who had spent weeks making me feel small.
The woman who laughed at my memories.
The woman who acted like she owned a piece of my marriage.
And for the first time since I met her…
She looked terrified.
Not annoyed.
Not arrogant.
Terrified.
“Who is that?”” I asked.
Jasmine didn’t answer.
Her eyes stayed locked on the SUV.
“Daniel.””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Get in your truck.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Get in your truck and leave.””
I almost laughed.
After everything?
After all the secrets?
After all the lies?
She was giving me orders again.
“No.””
Her eyes snapped toward me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Jasmine. I don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“And that’s the problem.””
The SUV door opened.
A man stepped out.
He was tall.
Late forties, maybe early fifties.
Gray hair.
Dark jacket.
He looked completely calm.
Too calm.
Like someone who knew exactly where he was and exactly what he was doing.
Jasmine grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
I looked down at her hand.
Then at her face.
She let go immediately.
“I’m serious.””
“Who is he?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I expect you to survive.””
That sentence stopped me.
Before I could respond, the man started walking toward us.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Jasmine grabbed the box and stepped backward.
The man looked at her.
Then at me.
Then smiled.
A small smile.
The kind that didn’t reach his eyes.
“Well.””
His voice was calm.
“This is unexpected.””
Jasmine said nothing.
The man looked at me.
“You must be Daniel.””
I felt my entire body tense.
“How do you know my name?””
He ignored the question.
“You’re taller than I expected.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He smiled again.
“It means Lena was right.””
My heart stopped.
“Right about what?””
The man glanced at Jasmine.
“She never told him.””
Jasmine’s face tightened.
“Don’t.””
The man looked amused.
“You still think you can control this?””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Neither answered.
The man stepped closer.
“My name is Victor Hale.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way Jasmine reacted told me everything.
She knew him.
“Are you the one looking for Michael?”” I asked.
Victor’s expression changed slightly.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“Who told you that name?””
I didn’t answer.
His eyes moved to Jasmine.
Then back to me.
“So.””
He nodded slowly.
“You found the letter.””
My stomach dropped.
“How do you know about the letter?””
Silence.
Victor looked at Jasmine.
“Interesting.””
Jasmine’s face turned pale.
“You sent someone?””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
Then he looked at me.
“Apparently Michael had more friends than we thought.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You knew Michael?””
Victor didn’t answer directly.
“I knew of him.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the only one you’re getting.””
I stepped forward.
“You know what?””
I was done being careful.
Done asking politely.
Everyone around me had spent years protecting secrets.
Protecting each other.
Protecting themselves.
Nobody protected me.
“You all keep talking like I’m some child who can’t handle the truth.””
I looked at Jasmine.
“You.””
Then Victor.
“And you.””
Then back toward the building.
“Everyone seems to know what happened except me.””
My voice shook.
“But it’s my marriage.””
Nobody spoke.
“It’s my life.””
The parking lot went quiet.
Then Victor said something I didn’t expect.
“You’re right.””
I looked at him.
He nodded.
“You should have been told.””
Jasmine looked at him sharply.
“Victor.””
“No.””
His eyes stayed on me.
“He deserves to know.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because for the first time, someone was actually agreeing with me.
But I didn’t trust it.
Not from anyone.
“Tell me.””
Victor looked at the box in Jasmine’s hands.
Then at the building.
Then back at me.
“Not here.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“Another secret location. Another private conversation. Another person telling me I’ll understand later.””
Victor’s expression softened.
“You think this is about keeping you out.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
He paused.
“It’s about keeping you alive.””
I felt the anger leave my body for a second.
Not because I believed him.
Because I hated that he sounded serious.
“What happened to Michael?””
Victor looked away.
“That depends on which part you mean.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Michael Reynolds was not the innocent man everyone thinks he was.””
Jasmine stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Victor looked at her.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Her face changed.
Pain.
Guilt.
Something deeper.
I noticed.
And I remembered what Aaron had told me.
Michael had called Jasmine before he disappeared.
“Why does everyone keep acting like Michael is the center of this?”” I asked.
Victor looked at me.
“Because he was.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Your wife’s first secret was not the affair.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
Victor continued.
“The affair was what people saw.””
He looked directly at me.
“The real secret was what happened afterward.””
Jasmine whispered:
“Stop.””
Victor ignored her.
“Michael discovered something.””
“What?””
“He discovered that Lena wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
I looked at Jasmine.
Then Victor.
“What did he discover?””
Victor didn’t answer.
Instead, he asked:
“Do you know why Lena chose you, Daniel?””
The question felt like a knife.
I hated hearing it from someone else.
“She told me.””
Victor nodded.
“Did she?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly repeating Lena’s words felt wrong.
She made me feel special.
Chosen.
Like I had saved her.
Victor watched my silence.
“Exactly.””
Jasmine looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I need to hear this.””
Victor continued.
“Lena didn’t just meet you after Michael disappeared.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“She met you because she was looking for a way out.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Victor didn’t react.
“She needed a new life.””
“That doesn’t mean she used me.””
“No.””
He paused.
“It doesn’t.””
That surprised me.
“Then what are you saying?””
“I’m saying the truth is more complicated.””
I hated that answer.
Because complicated was where people hid things.
Complicated was where betrayal lived.
Victor looked at Jasmine.
“Show him.””
Jasmine froze.
“No.””
“Show him.””
Her fingers tightened around the box.
I looked at her.
“What’s inside?””
She didn’t answer.
“Jasmine.””
Slowly…
She opened the box.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Old documents.
A phone.
And a small black notebook.
I stepped closer.
The top photograph caught my attention.
It was Lena.
But not the Lena I knew.
She was younger.
Standing beside Michael.
And beside them was Jasmine.
The three of them looked happy.
Normal.
Until I noticed the date written on the back.
Five years ago.
Before I met Lena.
Before the wedding.
Before everything.
Jasmine picked up the notebook.
Her hands were shaking.
“I kept this because I thought one day I would need to prove what happened.””
“To who?””
She looked at me.
“To you.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened?””
Jasmine opened the notebook.
Then she handed it to me.
The first page had one sentence written in Michael’s handwriting.
A sentence that made my entire world tilt.
*If Daniel Carter ever finds this, it means Lena finally told him enough to start asking questions.*
I looked up.
“How did Michael know my name?””
Nobody answered.
Then the black SUV behind us suddenly flashed its headlights.
Victor’s face changed.
The calm disappeared.
“Get down.””
The sound that followed was not a car horn.
Not a door slamming.
It was something else.
Something sharp.
Something violent.
Jasmine screamed.
Victor grabbed me and pulled me behind the concrete wall.
The notebook fell from my hand.
And as I hit the ground, I heard Victor say the words I never wanted to hear.
“They found Michael’s evidence.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“And now they know you have it.””
