Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Disappearing Act
Nobody touched the laptop.
Nobody spoke.
The file sat on the screen like a locked door.
*NIA’S FATHER.*
Three words.
Three words that should have been impossible.
For sixteen years, I had lived with a simple truth.
My father was dead.
My mother was gone.
Vanessa was the person who stayed.
Now, in less than one night, every piece of that truth had fallen apart.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She didn’t answer.
“You knew my father was alive.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
I stepped back.
“How long?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Since the day you were born.””
My stomach dropped.
The room went silent.
Caleb stared at her.
“Mom…”
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want this.””
I laughed quietly.
“You didn’t want this?””
I pointed toward the laptop.
“You didn’t want me to know my father was alive?””
“Nia.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You watched me grow up believing I was abandoned.””
“I never said you were abandoned.””
I looked at her.
“You let me believe it.””
She had no answer.
That was worse.
Daniel moved closer.
“Nia, you need to understand—”
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t need another person explaining my own life to me.””
He stopped.
Good.
Because I was done being the last person to know.
I sat back down.
My hands hovered over the keyboard.
“Open it.””
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
“Open the file.””
He nodded slowly.
The screen changed.
A video appeared.
The date was sixteen years ago.
The day after I was born.
My heart pounded.
I clicked.
For a few seconds, there was only darkness.
Then a man appeared.
I didn’t recognize him.
But I knew.
Somewhere deep inside, I knew.
He looked younger than the man I imagined.
Dark hair.
Tired eyes.
A face full of regret.
My father.
He stared into the camera.
And for a moment, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“Hi, Nia.””
I covered my mouth.
Those two words destroyed me.
Because he wasn’t speaking about me.
He was speaking to me.
“I don’t know when you’ll see this.””
His voice shook.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to tell you myself.””
He looked away.
Like he was trying not to cry.
“I want to start by saying something important.””
A pause.
“I did not leave you.””
My eyes burned.
“I know people will tell you that I did.””
He swallowed.
“But I didn’t.””
The video continued.
“I made mistakes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I trusted the wrong people. I thought I could fix things before anyone got hurt.””
His expression changed.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was watching the screen with tears on her face.
“My daughter, I need you to know your mother fought for you.””
My breathing slowed.
“She fought harder than anyone I have ever known.””
He looked down.
“And Vanessa…”
The room changed.
Vanessa froze.
“She was there.””
My father continued.
“She saved you.””
I frowned.
Saved me?
From what?
“She helped your mother escape.””
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
My father’s voice continued.
“But then something happened.””
The video paused for a second.
Like he was struggling with the words.
“Vanessa made a choice.””
The room became colder.
“She made a deal with the people who were looking for us.””
My chest tightened.
“What people?””
Nobody answered.
My father continued.
“She thought she was buying time.””
He looked directly at the camera.
“But deals made from fear always have a price.””
The screen flickered.
Then another image appeared.
A document.
A contract.
A signature.
I leaned closer.
The name at the bottom was visible.
*Vanessa Ellison.*
My heart stopped.
Vanessa covered her face.
I turned.
“You signed something?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“With who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who?””
Daniel spoke.
“The people your father was trying to expose.””
I looked at him.
“Who are they?””
His jaw tightened.
“A group that worked with your father’s company.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
“No.””
He looked at the screen.
“Because the name changed over time.””
I looked back at Vanessa.
“What did you agree to?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I agreed that I would keep you hidden.””
I stared.
“From my father?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
“No.””
My anger paused.
“Then from who?””
Vanessa looked at the video.
“From the people who wanted your father to disappear.””
A chill moved through me.
“But why hide me?””
“Because your father knew too much.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Your father discovered financial crimes connected to powerful people.””
“And?””
“And he planned to expose them.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So you hid me.””
“Yes.””
“You separated me from everyone.””
“Yes.””
“You let me think my parents were gone.””
Her face crumpled.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Why?””
The word came out broken.
“Why would you do that?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw the answer before she spoke.
She wasn’t afraid of me being angry.
She was afraid I would never forgive her.
“Because the first person they came looking for was you.””
Silence.
I stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“The night your mother disappeared, someone came to the hospital.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“I really don’t know.””
She looked at me.
“But I know what they said.””
I waited.
“They said if they couldn’t find your mother, they would take you.””
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
My anger didn’t disappear.
But it changed.
Because suddenly, I saw something I hadn’t wanted to see.
Vanessa hadn’t only been controlling my life.
She had also been terrified.
“How did my mother disappear?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel interrupted.
“She was taken.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“We don’t know that.””
“Yes, we do.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“We found evidence.””
My head snapped toward him.
“What evidence?””
He hesitated.
Then reached into his pocket.
A small photo.
He placed it on the table.
I picked it up.
It showed a building.
An old warehouse.
On the back was a handwritten note.
A date.
And my mother’s name.
“She was there?””
Daniel nodded.
“She left clues.””
I stared at the picture.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because I promised her.””
I looked at her.
“What promise?””
Her eyes met mine.
“She made me promise that if she didn’t come back…”
Her voice broke.
“That I would make sure you never went looking for her.””
I felt tears gather.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked toward the laptop.
“Because she knew you would.””
The room became quiet.
Because that sounded like my mother.
Even without remembering her.
I knew.
I would have searched.
I would have asked questions.
I would have opened every locked door.
The screen suddenly changed.
A notification appeared.
*NEW MESSAGE RECEIVED.*
Everyone froze.
Nobody had touched the computer.
A message opened by itself.
One sentence.
One name.
My name.
*Nia, if you are seeing this, Vanessa finally told you enough.*
My hands went cold.
Then another line appeared.
*Now you need to know where your mother really went.*
I stared.
The final line loaded.
And my heart stopped.
*She didn’t disappear sixteen years ago.*
A pause.
Then:
*She came back.*
I looked at everyone.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then the laptop played an audio file automatically.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
A voice I had only heard seconds earlier in the video.
A voice I had spent my entire life missing.
My mother.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
May you like
And the first thing she said was:
“Nia… if you’re hearing this, it means I finally found a way back to you.””
