Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Inside the Box
The flash drive weighed almost nothing.
That was the strangest part.
Something so small had managed to change everything I thought I knew about my life.
I held it between my fingers, staring at the tiny piece of plastic like it was something alive.
Something dangerous.
Something my mother had trusted me to find.
Vanessa stood across the room.
She looked older than she had an hour ago.
Not physically.
But something about her had cracked.
The woman who always had an answer.
The woman who always knew exactly what to say.
She had run out of words.
“What’s on it?””
My voice was quiet.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Daniel.
Then Eleanor.
Then Caleb.
Finally, I looked at Vanessa.
“What’s on it?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because I was tired of hearing those words.
“You really expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You opened the box.””
“I opened the box.””
“And you didn’t check the flash drive?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I couldn’t.””
That made me pause.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked at the small device in my hand.
“Because I was afraid of what I would find.””
The honesty surprised me.
But it didn’t erase anything.
“You were afraid?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Do you know what it feels like to be sixteen years old and realize everyone around you has been afraid except you?””
Vanessa looked away.
I continued.
“You were afraid. My mother was afraid. My father was afraid.””
My voice cracked.
“Caleb was afraid.””
Caleb lowered his eyes.
“And I was the only person who didn’t even know there was something to be afraid of.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Daniel said quietly:
“Your mother wanted that.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She wanted you to have a normal childhood.””
I stared.
“Normal?””
The word tasted bitter.
“She died.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“She disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“She left me secrets instead of answers.””
His face softened.
“She left you a chance.””
I looked down at the flash drive.
A chance.
That was what everyone kept saying.
But nobody understood.
A chance to do what?
Destroy everything?
Forgive people?
Find someone who was gone?
I walked toward the old laptop sitting on the desk in the corner of the living room.
Nobody stopped me.
That worried me.
If this was dangerous, why was everyone letting me open it?
Maybe because they were finally done protecting me.
Maybe because they were ready for the truth too.
I sat down.
The room gathered behind me.
Caleb stood closest.
Vanessa stayed farther away.
Like she didn’t deserve to be near the answer.
I plugged in the flash drive.
The screen flashed.
One folder appeared.
No name.
Just a date.
The date I was born.
My fingers froze.
“Open it,” Daniel whispered.
I clicked.
Inside were four files.
Three videos.
One audio recording.
And one document.
The document was named:
*FOR NIA WHEN SHE IS READY*
I clicked it.
A page appeared.
The first sentence made my eyes burn.
*My sweet girl,*
I covered my mouth.
Because those three words were enough.
My mother.
Talking to me.
Not about me.
To me.
*If you are seeing this, then I hope you are old enough to understand that people are complicated. The people who hurt you may have also loved you. The people who loved you may have also hurt you.*
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying silently.
*I don’t want you to hate anyone because of me. Hate is a heavy thing to carry, and I already carried enough. I want you to know what happened.*
I clicked the first video.
The screen went black.
Then an image appeared.
A woman sitting in a hospital room.
My mother.
My breath disappeared.
She looked younger than I expected.
Not like the photographs.
Not like a memory.
Alive.
Real.
She was wearing a hospital gown.
Her hair was pulled back.
And she was holding a tiny baby.
Me.
I couldn’t move.
“Nia…”
Caleb’s voice broke.
I lifted a hand.
I couldn’t hear anything except her voice.
“If you’re watching this,” my mother said, “then you’re probably angry.””
I started crying before I realized it.
Her voice.
I had imagined it my whole life.
But nothing prepared me for actually hearing it.
“I know you’ll have questions.””
She smiled sadly.
“You always did.””
My chest tightened.
Even as a baby, she knew me.
“I need you to understand something first. Vanessa did not start as your enemy.””
I looked at her.
“She was my best friend.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She saved my life once.””
My mother looked down at me.
“And I asked her to save yours.””
The video shook slightly.
Maybe someone was holding the camera.
Maybe my mother’s hands were trembling.
“I discovered something about your father.””
The room became silent.
“My husband wasn’t the man I thought he was.””
My heart pounded.
“He had made choices that put us in danger.””
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded slightly.
“My father?””
Daniel answered quietly.
“Yes.””
My mother continued.
“I found evidence that he was involved with people who cared more about money than lives.””
I felt cold.
“But I also learned something else.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa knew.””
The room changed.
Everyone looked at Vanessa.
My mother’s voice continued.
“She knew before I did.””
Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
I paused the video.
Everyone looked at me.
I turned around.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“It’s not what you think.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at the screen.
Then at me.
“I found out your father was hiding things.””
“What things?””
“Business deals.””
Daniel spoke.
“Illegal deals.””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“And you didn’t tell my mother?””
“I did.””
“Then why did she say you knew before her?””
Vanessa looked broken.
“Because I knew something was wrong.””
“But you didn’t tell her everything.””
“No.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I was scared.””
Again.
That word.
But this time, it sounded different.
Not like an excuse.
Like a confession.
“What were you scared of?””
Vanessa looked at the video.
Then answered.
“That your father would hurt you.””
The room went quiet.
I turned back to the screen.
My mother was still speaking.
“I need you to know something about Vanessa.””
The words hit harder because they came from her.
“Fear made her make choices I didn’t understand.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“But she loved you, Nia.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She loved you before you were born.””
The video paused.
I stared at the frozen image of my mother holding me.
A baby who had no idea how many people were already fighting over her future.
Then the video continued.
“But there is one thing Vanessa has never told you.””
My heart stopped.
The room seemed to lean closer.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
“Your father did not disappear.””
Everyone froze.
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
The video continued.
“He is alive.””
The words didn’t make sense.
My father.
Alive?
The man whose funeral I thought I remembered.
The man whose grave we visited.
Alive.
My mother’s voice became softer.
“And he has spent years trying to find you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
Not denying.
Not arguing.
Just crying.
I stood up slowly.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Nia…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Someone is lying.””
My mother’s face remained on the screen.
Then she said the sentence that made my entire body go cold.
“The reason you were never told your father was alive is because Vanessa made a deal.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
The room went silent.
My mother’s voice continued.
“She promised she would keep you hidden.””
I stared at Vanessa.
A person I had trusted.
A person who had raised me.
A person who had told me she was protecting me.
And then Vanessa whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“I didn’t hide you from your father.””
She looked at me.
“I hid you from someone worse.””
The laptop screen flickered.
The video ended.
And a new file appeared automatically.
A file that had not been there before.
May you like
A file with only one name.
*NIA’S FATHER.*
