Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Beneath Our Vows
I looked at Adrian.
Not at the man who stood across the ballroom wearing an expensive suit.
Not at the man whose name appeared on every business magazine cover.
Not at the husband I had spent eight years defending.
I looked at him like he was a stranger.
Because maybe he was.
“Answer me.””
My voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Adrian didn’t move.
The investigators were still there. My brothers were standing beside me. Rachel was holding the photograph that had just shattered everything I thought I knew.
And still, Adrian said nothing.
That silence was his answer.
“You knew,” I whispered.
His eyes met mine.
“Elena.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
Like he still had the right to comfort me.
Like he still knew me.
“Did you know my mother?””
Adrian looked around the room.
A habit.
A calculation.
He was searching for the version of the truth that would cause the least damage.
I knew that look.
I had spent years married to it.
“Adrian.””
Marcus’s voice cut through the room.
“Answer the question.””
Adrian looked at him.
“This is not your family matter.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You made it my family matter the moment you hurt my sister.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Then he looked back at me.
“Yes.””
One word.
The room went silent.
“Yes,” he repeated.
“I knew your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“How?””
He took a breath.
“My father knew her.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“It’s a piece of the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“What was my mother to your father?””
Adrian looked away.
That was when I knew.
Whatever the answer was, he hated saying it.
“She worked for him.””
I stared.
“My mother worked for your father?””
“Yes.””
“What kind of work?””
Silence.
Then:
“Financial consulting.””
Rachel let out a bitter laugh.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Adrian.
“That’s what he told you?””
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Be quiet.””
Rachel didn’t.
“She wasn’t a consultant.””
My heart pounded.
“What was she?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She was his accountant.””
The words landed heavily.
My mother.
The woman who taught me honesty.
The woman who kept every receipt in a little wooden box.
The woman who always told me money showed people’s character.
She had worked for Adrian Vale Sr.
And apparently, she knew things.
“What things?”” I asked.
Rachel didn’t answer.
I looked at Adrian.
“What did she know?””
His face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“She found problems.””
“What problems?””
“Elena.””
“What problems?””
The room was completely still.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“My father wasn’t the man you thought he was.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
Because it sounded almost impossible.
I had only met Adrian’s father a few times.
He had always been charming.
Polite.
Generous.
He donated to charities.
He shook hands.
He smiled for cameras.
Just like his son.
“You’re saying this now?””
Adrian looked at me.
“I’m telling you because it’s true.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re telling me because you’re trapped.””
His expression hardened.
“That’s not fair.””
I almost smiled.
Fair.
The word coming from him was almost unbelievable.
“Fair?””
My hand touched my cheek.
The room went quiet again.
Adrian looked away.
For the first time, I saw shame.
But it wasn’t enough.
Not anymore.
“What did my mother find?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“She found evidence that Adrian’s father was moving money through fake charities.””
My stomach dropped.
The foundation.
The money.
The names.
The pattern.
It suddenly felt much bigger.
“He used charities?””
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at the banner behind us.
“He knew people trusted causes like this.””
Margaret stepped closer.
“That’s why Elena was perfect.””
I turned.
“What?””
Margaret’s expression was painful.
“Your mother raised you to care about people. She taught you to believe in helping others.””
She looked at Adrian.
“And he knew that.””
My blood ran cold.
“He chose me because of my mother?””
Adrian immediately answered.
“No.””
Too fast.
Too desperate.
I looked at him.
“Didn’t he?””
He didn’t respond.
And that was enough.
The investigator stepped forward.
“Mr. Vale, we need a formal statement regarding these allegations.””
Adrian ignored her.
His eyes stayed on me.
“You need to understand something.””
I laughed quietly.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
He moved closer.
“Everything I did was because I was trying to protect you.””
My brothers immediately reacted.
Julian stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Adrian looked at him.
“I’m serious.””
Julian’s expression was cold.
“That sentence has been used by every person who hurts someone and wants forgiveness afterward.””
Adrian looked back at me.
“I never wanted you involved.””
“Involved in what?””
“My father’s mistakes.””
I stared.
“Your father died years ago.””
“Yes.””
“Then why am I only finding out now?””
His silence answered again.
Because he chose not to tell me.
Because the truth benefited him when hidden.
Rachel opened another folder.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
She looked at Adrian.
“I didn’t come here only because of the foundation.””
My heart sank.
“Then why?””
Rachel took out a document.
“This.””
She handed it to Marcus.
He read it.
Then his expression changed.
“What?””
I moved toward him.
“What is it?””
Marcus looked at me.
“It’s a marriage agreement.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He handed it to me.
The paper was old.
The date was familiar.
The week before my wedding.
I scanned the first page.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because my name was there.
But not as a wife.
As an asset holder.
The document explained ownership.
Control.
Inheritance.
And one clause made my hands shake.
*Upon marriage to Elena Hart, Adrian Vale gains legal access to all foundation-related networks and financial connections associated with her family.*
I looked up.
“No.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“Elena—”
“You married me for this.””
“No.””
“You married me because of my family.””
“No.””
The word came out louder.
Almost angry.
But anger didn’t scare me anymore.
Not after tonight.
“Then explain it.””
He couldn’t.
Because there was no explanation that didn’t destroy him.
The woman who had spent eight years believing she was loved finally saw the truth.
Maybe Adrian had loved parts of me.
My loyalty.
My trust.
My name.
But not enough to protect me from himself.
Then Caleb’s phone rang.
He looked down.
Answered.
“Hello?””
A pause.
His face changed.
“What do you mean?””
Everyone watched him.
Then he looked at me.
“Elena.””
I knew.
Something else.
Another secret.
“What?””
He lowered the phone.
“The person who sent the messages has been identified.””
Rachel stepped closer.
“Who?””
Caleb looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
“The number belongs to someone connected to the Vale family.””
Adrian’s face went pale.
“Impossible.””
Caleb ignored him.
“The messages came from a private account registered under…”
He stopped.
Like he didn’t want to say the name.
“Say it.””
He looked at me.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“My father?””
Caleb nodded slowly.
“But that’s not the strange part.””
“What is?””
He looked at the phone again.
“The account was activated yesterday.””
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
“Yes.””
Caleb’s voice dropped.
“Because according to every record we have…”
A pause.
“Your father died twenty years ago.””
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then Rachel looked at the old photograph in her hand.
And whispered the words that changed everything.
“Elena…”
May you like
She looked terrified.
“Your father might still be alive.””
