Chapter 9: The Enemy Who Wanted to Be Exposed
Ethan’s final words stayed in my mind all night.
*You’ll understand why your father tried to destroy my family.*
Not why my father investigated him.
Not why he was afraid of Ethan.
Why my father tried to destroy his family.
Those words bothered me because they were carefully chosen.
Ethan never said things accidentally.
Every sentence was a weapon.
Every pause was part of a performance.
And now I understood something terrifying.
He wasn’t running anymore.
He wanted us to chase him.
By morning, Madison and I were sitting in Thomas Reed’s office downtown.
The same city that had watched my daughter get humiliated the night before now moved outside the windows like nothing had happened.
People rushed to work.
Cars filled the streets.
Everyone continued living normal lives.
But inside that office, everything was changing.
Thomas placed a large folder on the table.
“This is everything your father left behind.””
I looked at the documents.
“How long have you had these?””
“Years.””
“And you never told me?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Your father gave strict instructions.””
“Instructions that protected his secrets?””
“Instructions that protected Madison.””
I glanced at my daughter.
She sat quietly beside me.
Since hearing the recording, something had changed.
She wasn’t broken.
She was angry.
And for the first time, her anger was not directed at herself.
“What did my grandfather know?”” Madison asked.
Thomas opened the folder.
“Before your grandfather died, he became concerned about Ethan Whitmore’s company.””
“Why?””
“Financial records didn’t match public reports.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means money was moving through accounts that didn’t have clear explanations.””
Madison looked down.
“Ethan told me investors were impressed with him.””
“They were.””
Thomas pushed a document forward.
“But they weren’t investing because of Ethan.””
I read the page.
Then stopped.
“Madison.””
My daughter looked.
Her face changed.
The document showed an investment agreement.
Her name was there.
Again.
Everything came back to her.
“He used her.””
Thomas nodded.
“Your father believed Ethan was building credibility by attaching himself to Madison’s reputation.””
“But why?””
“Because your daughter was connected to your father.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas leaned back.
“Your father had a reputation for honesty. People trusted him.””
“And Madison inherited that trust.””
“Yes.””
A terrible realization settled over me.
Ethan didn’t just want Madison’s money.
He wanted everything people associated with her.
Her name.
Her family.
Her credibility.
Her future.
Thomas continued.
“Your father began investigating Ethan quietly.””
“Why quietly?””
“Because he believed Ethan was dangerous when challenged.””
That sounded exactly right.
“What did he find?””
Thomas opened another document.
“He found evidence that Ethan had manipulated previous business partners.””
Madison looked up.
“Previous?””
“Yes.””
“How many?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Three.””
The room went quiet.
“What happened to them?”” I asked.
“One lost his company.””
“Another?””
“Declared bankruptcy.””
“And the third?””
Thomas looked at Madison.
“Disappeared from the business world.””
My daughter swallowed.
“Why didn’t Grandpa stop him?””
“He tried.””
“How?””
“He planned to confront Ethan.””
“When?””
“Two weeks before his death.””
My stomach tightened.
“Two weeks?””
“Yes.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“Because Ethan found out.””
The silence that followed felt heavy.
Madison’s voice became small.
“How?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
We all knew.
Someone inside my father’s circle had told him.
Someone had betrayed him.
“Who had access to this information?”” I asked.
Thomas sighed.
“Your father. Me. His assistant.””
“Who was his assistant?””
He looked at me.
“You know her.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“No.””
Thomas nodded.
“Rachel.””
I froze.
“The woman who called me?””
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
Rachel.
The person who revealed Ethan’s secrets.
The person who had access to the documents.
The person who knew about the files.
“How does she fit into this?””
Thomas answered carefully.
“She worked for your father before she worked for Ethan.””
I stared.
“What?””
“She was your father’s research assistant.””
Madison looked shocked.
“Then why was she at Ethan’s company?””
“Because after your father died, Ethan hired her.””
“Why would she work for him?””
Thomas looked at the documents.
“Because she was trying to find out what happened.””
The room became silent.
Suddenly everything connected.
Rachel wasn’t just an employee.
She was investigating.
“She knew,” I whispered.
Thomas nodded.
“She suspected.””
Madison looked at me.
“What about Daniel?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“That is the problem.””
“What?””
“Daniel Whitmore is not just Ethan’s lawyer.””
“I know.””
“He is Ethan’s older brother.””
I stared.
The man at my door.
The calm man with the legal documents.
The man who had threatened me politely.
“He was involved too.””
“We don’t know how much.””
“But you suspect.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Again.
That was an answer.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Rachel.
*I need to see you. Alone. It’s about Ethan’s brother.*
I showed Madison.
“No.””
She immediately shook her head.
“Mom, don’t go alone.””
“I need answers.””
“It could be a trap.””
She was right.
But I also knew something else.
Rachel had risked contacting me.
She had revealed information that could destroy Ethan.
“I’ll meet her somewhere public.””
Madison looked worried.
“I’m coming.””
I almost argued.
Then I stopped.
Because for years I had protected Madison by making decisions for her.
I wasn’t going to repeat Ethan’s mistake.
“Okay.””
Two hours later, we met Rachel at a small coffee shop away from downtown.
The moment she saw Madison, her face changed.
“I’m sorry.””
Madison looked confused.
“For what?””
Rachel looked down.
“For not warning you sooner.””
My daughter said nothing.
Rachel sat across from us.
“I worked for your grandfather.””
“I know.””
Rachel looked surprised.
“He told you?””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Thomas told us.””
She nodded slowly.
“My grandfather trusted you.””
Rachel’s eyes filled.
“He did.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I failed him.””
The words came out broken.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel opened her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this after he died.””
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“From my father?””
She nodded.
My hands shook as I opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My father.
The letter was short.
Only a few paragraphs.
But one sentence made my heart stop.
*If Ethan Whitmore ever gets close to Madison, do not trust anything he says. He did not choose her by accident.*
I looked at Rachel.
“What else?””
She swallowed.
“There’s more.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag.
A second envelope.
“This was hidden inside the first.””
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Not of Ethan.
Not of Madison.
Of my father.
Standing outside a building.
Beside him was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I had trusted for years.
My breath caught.
Because the person standing next to my father in the photograph was the last person I expected.
Rachel whispered:
“Your father wasn’t investigating Ethan alone.””
I stared at the picture.
“Who is that?””
Rachel looked at me.
“The person who helped Ethan find Madison.””
My fingers went numb.
Because I knew that face.
I had seen it every holiday.
Every family gathering.
Every birthday.
Rachel’s voice dropped.
“Your own family member was working with him.””
May you like
The photograph slipped from my hand.
And suddenly, everything I thought I knew about my family began falling apart.
