Chapter 6: The Voice on the Recording

The words hung in the conference room.

A recording device.

Inside my wedding cake.

For several seconds, I heard nothing but the faint hum of the building's ventilation.

Then I asked, “What exactly was it recording?””

Charles kept the phone pressed to his ear.

“The hotel security team hasn't listened to the entire file yet.””

“Then let's listen.””

He lowered the phone.

“Margaret—”

“Now.””

Evelyn was already gathering the papers.

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Mom, maybe we should let the police handle this.””

I turned to him.

“The police have been handling my life for thirty-two years without finding the truth.””

He went silent.

I looked at Charles.

“Take me back to the hotel.””

“No.””

The answer came from Daniel.

I stared at him.

“You don't get to tell me no.””

“It's not safe.””

I almost smiled.

“Safe?””

I looked down at my frosting-stained dress.

“Daniel, someone has been impersonating me for years, forging my signature, opening bank accounts in my name, and apparently planting recording devices inside my wedding cake.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“Then don't tell me what is safe.””

He looked away.

Brooke spoke softly.

“I'll come with you.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“You should stay here.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was firmer now.

“Whatever happens next, I'm not hiding again.””

Charles grabbed his coat.

“We all go together.””

Evelyn nodded.

“No one separates.””

We left the conference room as a group.

The elevator ride down was silent.

No one looked at anyone else.

When we reached the lobby, the security guard met us.

He looked nervous.

“Mr. Whitmore, the hotel sent the file electronically.””

“Where is the device?”” Charles asked.

“Security has it.””

“Has anyone touched it?””

“Only the investigator.””

“Good.””

I stepped forward.

“Did you find anything else?””

The guard hesitated.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“There were two microphones.””

My stomach tightened.

“Two?””

“One was inside the cake display.””

“And the second?””

He looked directly at me.

“In the bridal suite.””

Brooke went pale.

“What?””

The guard nodded.

“Hidden under the vanity.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know?””

“No.””

She looked genuinely frightened.

“Why would someone put one in my suite?””

Evelyn answered.

“To record private conversations.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Who had access?””

The guard took a breath.

“Wedding staff. Family members. Security. The bridal party.””

Brooke looked toward Charles.

“Dad…”

He held up a hand.

“Not here.””

We climbed into two vehicles.

I rode with Daniel and Evelyn.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel said quietly, “Mom.””

I stared out the window.

“What?””

“I'm sorry.””

I didn't look at him.

“For what?””

“For the wedding.””

I almost said everything.

The cake.

The table.

The missing dance.

The way he'd shrugged.

But something stopped me.

Not anger.

Exhaustion.

“Don't apologize for the cake.””

He frowned.

“Then what?””

“Apologize for believing you had to choose.””

“Choose what?””

“Between your wife and your mother.””

He swallowed.

“That isn't what I was doing.””

“It felt like it.””

He looked down at his hands.

“I thought keeping the peace would make everything easier.””

“And did it?””

“No.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I was wrong.””

It was the first time that night he'd said it without defending himself.

I turned toward him.

“What did Brooke tell you before the wedding?””

He hesitated.

“She said there was a family problem.””

“That's not an answer.””

“She said your name had appeared in financial records connected to Carter Development.””

I stared at him.

“Did you believe her?””

“No.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I thought if I told you, you'd panic.””

I laughed softly.

“You've known me for forty years.””

“I know.””

“When have I ever panicked?””

He looked at me.

“Never.””

“Then you should have trusted me.””

His eyes filled.

“I should have.””

We reached the hotel.

Police cars were parked along the side entrance.

Several hotel employees stood outside.

Inside, the ballroom looked completely different.

The flowers remained.

The tables remained.

The champagne remained.

But the music was gone.

So was the laughter.

The wedding had become a crime scene.

An investigator named Detective Sloan met us near the ballroom doors.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I'm Detective Sloan.””

He shook my hand.

“We found the device approximately twenty minutes ago.””

“Have you listened to it?””

“Part of it.””

“What does it contain?””

He looked at Charles.

Then back at me.

“You should hear it yourself.””

We entered a small security room.

A monitor displayed a timeline from the recording.

Sloan inserted a drive.

The first few seconds were nothing but room noise.

Glasses.

Distant voices.

Music.

Then the microphone picked up a conversation.

Brooke's voice.

“Did you sign it?””

Another voice answered.

A man's.

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

It sounded like Daniel.

I looked at him.

He shook his head.

“That isn't me.””

The recording continued.

“Did she notice?””

“No.””

“She can't know about the trust.””

“I know.””

I looked at Brooke.

She was crying.

“That isn't me,” she whispered.

The voice that answered her wasn't Daniel.

It was another man.

Low.

Calm.

Older.

“Once she signs, the problem disappears.””

Brooke's recorded voice said, “And what happens to Margaret?””

The man's answer was barely above a whisper.

“She won't remember any of it.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What does that mean?””

Detective Sloan stopped the recording.

“We don't know.””

“Play it.””

He hesitated.

“Mrs. Carter—”

“Play it.””

He did.

The man's voice returned.

“She'll be protected.””

Brooke's voice:

“You said nobody would hurt her.””

“I said she wouldn't be a problem.””

The recording stopped abruptly.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Daniel turned toward Brooke.

“What did you know?””

“I swear I never had that conversation.””

“You're on the recording.””

“I know!””

Her voice broke.

“But I don't remember saying those things.””

I looked at her.

“Maybe because you didn't.””

She stared at me.

“What?””

I turned toward Detective Sloan.

“Can you isolate the voices?””

“Yes.””

“The second man's voice.””

He nodded.

“We'll run enhancement.””

“Do it.””

While he worked, Charles stepped aside to make a call.

I watched him.

There was something in his posture.

He looked afraid again.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

I walked toward him.

“Who are you calling?””

“Nobody.””

“You're holding a phone.””

He lowered it.

“I need to contact my security team.””

“Why?””

“To make sure the hotel remains locked down.””

I stared at him.

“Or to make sure someone doesn't leave?””

He didn't answer.

“Charles.””

He looked at me.

“I didn't know about the recording.””

“I didn't ask that.””

“Margaret—”

“Did you know the man on the recording?””

His silence was enough.

I stepped closer.

“You recognize him.””

“No.””

“You do.””

“No.””

I lowered my voice.

“You've lied to me all night.””

He looked exhausted.

“I've been trying to protect you.””

“From whom?””

He looked toward Daniel.

Then Brooke.

Then the detective.

Finally, he whispered, “Victor.””

My heart stopped.

“Victor Hale?””

Charles nodded.

“The man who supposedly died in 1994.””

“Yes.””

“But he is alive.””

Charles's eyes filled with something close to regret.

“I saw him last month.””

The room went still.

I stared at him.

“Where?””

“Outside your house.””

My mouth went dry.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was trying to confirm it.””

“You saw him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone was watching my house.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe I was imagining things.””

Charles closed his eyes.

“I was afraid you'd confront him.””

“Why would I confront him?””

“Because Robert did.””

The room seemed to freeze.

I stepped backward.

“What do you mean?””

Charles opened his eyes.

“Robert discovered that Victor had been using your identity.””

I shook my head.

“Before Robert died?””

“Yes.””

“And that's why Robert wanted to meet you.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Charles looked at the floor.

“I was supposed to help him disappear.””

I felt suddenly cold.

“Disappear?””

“Robert believed Victor was going to kill him.””

Daniel whispered, “Grandfather never told us that.””

“He couldn't.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor had already reached someone inside the police department.””

I looked at Detective Sloan.

He stiffened.

Charles continued.

“Robert planned to move you and Daniel out of state.””

I closed my eyes.

“But he died before he could.””

“Yes.””

“Accident?””

Charles said nothing.

That was the answer.

I heard Brooke gasp behind me.

Then the security monitor suddenly flickered.

The recording vanished.

The screen went black.

Detective Sloan cursed.

“Someone's accessing the system.””

The lights in the security room shut off.

Darkness swallowed us.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Mom, stay here.””

A metallic crash echoed from the hallway.

Someone screamed.

Then the emergency lights came on.

The security door was open.

Nobody was standing outside.

Except there was something on the floor.

A small white envelope.

My name was written across it.

In handwriting I recognized instantly.

Robert's.

I bent down.

Daniel caught my wrist.

“Don't touch it.””

But I already knew what it said.

May you like

Because beneath my name were six words that made my entire body go cold.

*Margaret, I never died by accident.*
