Chapter 8: The Secret Rachel Buried
Rachel sat at my kitchen table for twenty minutes without speaking.
That was how I knew the truth was bad.
Rachel had never been good at silence.
When we were children, she filled every room with noise.
Stories.
Complaints.
Jokes.
But now she sat completely still.
Like someone waiting for a sentence that could destroy her.
Daniel stood near the window.
Watching.
Waiting.
Finally, I spoke.
“Tell me.””
Rachel looked at me.
“I didn’t know what Warren was planning.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“I know.””
“Then try again.””
She closed her eyes.
“When I met Warren, he already knew about you.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“He asked about your job.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“He said he was impressed.””
I almost laughed.
“Impressed?””
Rachel nodded.
“He said you were wasting your potential.””
Daniel looked at her.
“He was recruiting information.””
Rachel looked away.
“I didn’t know.””
“You kept talking to him about me.””
Her silence confirmed it.
I felt something break inside.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
“You told him things.””
“Only small things.””
“There are no small things when someone is trying to find a person.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t understand.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You didn’t want to understand.””
That hurt her.
But it was true.
People rarely missed warning signs because they weren’t there.
They missed them because accepting them was painful.
Daniel moved closer.
“What did Warren ask about Black Ridge?””
Rachel looked at him.
“I don’t know what that is.””
“You do.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
Daniel stared.
“You were at the hospital.””
Rachel froze.
I looked at him.
“What hospital?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“The night after Black Ridge.””
Rachel looked terrified.
“I was visiting my father.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were there when they brought me in.””
My heart stopped.
“You survived?””
Daniel nodded.
“But barely.””
Rachel looked at him.
“I thought you were…”
“Dead?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Everyone did.””
I looked at Rachel.
“What happened?””
She didn’t answer.
“Rachel.””
She covered her face.
“I was told not to talk.””
“By who?””
She looked at me.
“Warren.””
The room went silent.
I stood.
“What?””
“He came to the hospital.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What did he say?””
Rachel swallowed.
“He said people would get hurt if anyone talked.””
My hands curled into fists.
“He threatened you?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was afraid.””
I looked at my sister.
The woman I had protected my entire life.
The woman who just watched someone try to break me.
“You let me believe Daniel was dead.””
Her tears fell.
“I thought he was.””
Daniel shook his head.
“They made sure you thought that.””
A notification appeared on my phone.
A video file.
From Warren.
I opened it.
The screen showed my house.
The camera angle was from across the street.
Someone had been watching.
Then Warren appeared.
Smiling.
“Hello, Major.””
My blood went cold.
He continued.
“I know you’re with Rachel.””
Nobody moved.
“I also know Daniel is alive.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
Warren laughed softly.
“You always were difficult to eliminate.””
The video paused.
Then another message appeared.
*One hour.*
*Bring the drive.*
*Come alone.*
Lily looked at me.
“No.””
I turned.
She was standing in the doorway.
“You’re not going.””
I forced a smile.
“Lily.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“But you always say heroes don’t run away.””
I froze.
Because those words were mine.
Words I had told her when she was younger.
When she was afraid of storms.
When she was afraid of the dark.
“You’re right.””
She looked at me.
“So?””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Rachel.
Then the message.
I knew what Warren wanted.
He wanted me angry.
Alone.
Predictable.
But he made one mistake.
He assumed I was still fighting the same way I fought years ago.
I wasn’t.
Back then, I fought missions.
Now, I fought for my family.
I picked up the phone.
And instead of calling Warren…
I called someone else.
Someone who owed me a favor.
Someone who knew exactly how dangerous Warren Caldwell was.
“Major Hayes,” the voice answered.
“General.””
A pause.
“I was wondering if I’d ever hear from you again.””
I looked out the window.
At the quiet street.
At the house where Warren thought he was in control.
“I need your help.””
The general’s voice changed immediately.
“What happened?””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Lily.
“Someone from my past came back.””
Another pause.
“And someone from your past?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
I watched a car slowly pass our house.
Then disappear.
“An enemy.””
The general was silent.
Then:
“Send me the name.””
I did.
A few seconds later, his response arrived.
Three words.
*Impossible. He’s dead.*
I stared at the screen.
Because that was exactly what everyone had believed about Daniel.
Then another message appeared.
This one longer.
*Major… get your daughter somewhere safe.*
May you like
*Because Warren Caldwell isn’t just your enemy.*
*He’s the reason Black Ridge happened.*
