Chapter 8: The Child No One Knew About
Nobody spoke.
The sentence hung in the air.
I wasn’t the only person he took.
My mind tried to understand the words.
But it couldn’t.
Because there was only one question.
“Who else?””
My mother looked at me.
And I saw the answer before she said it.
A child’s name.
A child’s face.
A memory buried for decades.
“Your sister.””
The world stopped.
I stared at her.
“My what?””
She began crying.
“You had a sister.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Because some truths were too large to fit inside a person.
“I would remember.””
My mother shook her head.
“You were too young.””
“How old?””
“Four.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
“I had a sister?””
“Yes.””
“What happened to her?””
My mother looked down.
“She disappeared too.””
The room became silent.
Ethan whispered:
“Dad…”
I looked at him.
I had no answer.
No explanation.
Only another missing piece of my childhood.
“Her name was Lily.””
My mother touched the locket around her neck.
“She was two years old.””
I closed my eyes.
A little girl.
My sister.
Someone I never knew existed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
My mother looked broken.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing you again.””
I shook my head.
“You already lost me.””
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
But I needed her to feel a fraction of what I had carried.
“I spent years believing you abandoned me.””
“I know.””
“And you knew there was another child?””
“I knew she was missing.””
I looked at her.
“You’re saying you didn’t know where she was?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“My father erased records.””
I turned.
“What?””
“He did it carefully.””
Adrian’s voice was low.
“He changed addresses. Paid people. Covered mistakes.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian said:
“Because Lily wasn’t supposed to exist.””
The words made no sense.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at my mother.
“She knows.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Your father discovered I was planning to leave.””
“Because of Lily?””
She nodded.
“Because Lily wasn’t his daughter.””
Silence.
I felt the floor move beneath me.
“What?””
My mother looked at me.
“I was going to tell you everything that night.””
My breathing became shallow.
“Everything about what?””
She looked at the photograph on the table.
“Before I met your father, I had another relationship.””
I stared.
“Your sister was born from that relationship.””
I couldn’t speak.
My mother continued.
“Your father knew.””
“Then why marry you?””
Her answer was devastating.
“Because he wanted the perfect family image.””
I looked toward the closed door where my father had left.
The man who built an empire.
The man who controlled everything.
The man who cared more about appearances than people.
“He raised another man’s child?””
My mother nodded.
“But only because he could use it.””
“Use it?””
“To control me.””
I felt anger rising again.
My father hadn’t just lied.
He had collected secrets.
Used them.
Stored them.
Waiting for the moment they became weapons.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Adrian.
No.
From someone using Adrian’s old number.
The message read:
Ask him why he never looked for Lily.
I looked at Adrian.
“Did you send this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
My mother stood suddenly.
“We need to leave.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he knows.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the window.
“Your father.””
The lights in the house flickered.
Everyone froze.
Then we heard it.
A car door closing outside.
Adrian moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“He followed us.””
I looked outside.
A black sedan was parked at the curb.
The same type of car my father always used.
My mother grabbed my arm.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“You need to understand something.””
Her voice shook.
“Your father didn’t just hide your mother from you.””
A shadow moved outside.
“He hid the truth because if you find Lily…”
She stopped.
“Then everything he built will collapse.””
The front door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to open it.
Ethan stepped closer to me.
“Dad…”
My heart pounded.
The door unlocked.
And a voice came from the other side.
“Daniel.””
My father.
But he wasn’t alone.
A woman stood beside him.
An older woman.
One I recognized from my childhood photographs.
My stepmother.
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
May you like
Then she looked at my mother.
“You were never supposed to find him.””
