Thinking

Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Curtain

The photo stayed on my screen for several seconds.

Sophie walking out of school.

Her backpack over one shoulder.

Her head slightly down.

A normal moment from an ordinary day.

Except it wasn’t ordinary anymore.

Because someone had been watching her.

Someone wanted me to know they were watching her.

My first instinct was to call her.

My second instinct was to destroy whoever sent the message.

But anger was exactly what they wanted.

Anger made people careless.

I had spent years believing I was protecting my family by staying quiet.

I wasn’t going to make that mistake again.

I called Ethan.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?””

I didn’t waste time.

“Sophie.””

His voice changed.

“What about her?””

I sent him the photo.

The line went silent.

“Where did this come from?””

“Unknown number.””

“When?””

“Just now.””

“Daniel, listen to me.””

His voice became serious.

“You need to get her somewhere safe.””

“I’m picking her up.””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

“Not alone.””

I looked around the parking lot.

“Ethan—”

“Daniel, whoever did this wants you emotional. They want you reacting.””

I clenched my jaw.

“They threatened my daughter.””

“I know.””

“So what do you expect me to do?””

“I expect you to think like the person who built a sixteen-million-dollar company.””

I stopped.

Because he was right.

The old Daniel would have driven straight to Martin’s house.

The old Daniel would have walked into Jason’s office and demanded answers.

The old Daniel would have let anger choose his next move.

But the old Daniel had trusted everyone.

And look where that got him.

“Where are you?”” Ethan asked.

“Outside Jason’s office.””

“Leave.””

“Why?””

“Because if Jason is involved, he may not be the person controlling this.””

I looked back at the building.

“What do you mean?””

“Jason admitted he helped them.””

“Yes.””

“But he also admitted something important.””

“What?””

“He was scared.””

I frowned.

“So?””

“So scared people make mistakes.””

I understood.

Jason wasn’t the mastermind.

He was a piece on the board.

And someone else was moving the pieces.

I drove straight to Sophie’s school.

I didn’t call her.

I didn’t want to scare her.

I parked across the street and waited.

Five minutes later, she walked out.

The moment she saw me, she smiled.

“Dad?””

I got out of the truck.

She immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked around before answering.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

She frowned.

“That means something happened.””

I hated how much she had grown up.

She was sixteen, but sometimes she understood things adults ignored.

I opened the passenger door.

“Get in.””

She did.

As soon as we pulled away, she looked at me.

“Is this about Claire?””

I glanced at her.

“How did you know?””

“Because she called me.””

My hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“When?””

“This morning.””

“What did she say?””

Sophie looked out the window.

“She apologized.””

I waited.

“She said she should have protected me.””

The words surprised me.

“What did you say?””

“I told her I believed she was sorry.””

I looked at my daughter.

“You did?””

She shrugged.

“I can believe someone feels bad and still know they hurt me.””

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

Because Sophie had more wisdom than everyone who had caused this mess.

When we arrived home, Ethan was already there.

Sophie froze when she saw him.

She looked at me.

“Dad?””

I nodded.

“This is my brother.””

She looked confused.

“The one who disappeared?””

Ethan looked away.

“Yes.””

Sophie studied him.

Then she said something that made both of us stop.

“You look sad.””

Ethan blinked.

“What?””

“You look like someone who has been carrying something heavy for a long time.””

The room went quiet.

Ethan smiled sadly.

“You’re very much like your father.””

Sophie smiled slightly.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.””

For the first time in days, I almost laughed.

Almost.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Daniel.””

“Where are you?””

“Home.””

“Good. Stay there.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“We identified the number that sent the photo.””

My grip tightened.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“It was registered to an old phone account.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the account was created twelve years ago.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And?””

“The account belonged to your brother.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Ethan.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Harris continued.

“We traced the device.””

“Where?””

A pause.

“Your former company headquarters.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“The phone that sent the message was inside Whitaker Home Solutions.””

I looked toward the window.

The company.

My company.

The place where I thought I was safe.

“Who had access?””

“We’re checking.””

I lowered my voice.

“Detective, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Someone is trying to scare me.””

“Yes.””

“But they’re not hiding.””

“What do you mean?””

“They want me to find them.””

There was silence.

Then Detective Harris said:

“Daniel, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

“We found security footage.””

“From the headquarters?””

“Yes.””

“Who was using the phone?””

The detective paused.

And when he answered, my entire world shifted.

“Your wife.””

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

Claire.

Again.

The person at the center of everything.

The person who knew.

The person who lied.

The person who helped.

I ended the call.

Sophie looked at me.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“It’s okay.””

She shook her head.

“No, it’s not.””

I looked at her.

“You’re doing it again.””

“What?””

“Pretending everything is fine.””

The words hit me.

Because they sounded like something I used to tell myself.

I sat down.

“You’re right.””

She sat beside me.

“Is Claire bad?””

I looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

That answer scared me.

Because for years, I knew exactly what I thought about people.

Martin was arrogant.

Linda was cruel.

Jason was a betrayer.

Ethan was lost.

But Claire?

Claire was the person I couldn’t understand.

That night, she came to my house.

Ethan wanted me not to let her in.

I did anyway.

Because I needed the truth.

Claire walked inside slowly.

She looked at Sophie first.

“I’m glad you’re okay.””

Sophie nodded.

“Thank you.””

The politeness between them hurt more than anger would have.

Claire turned to me.

“I know you think I’m behind this.””

I didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

“You were at my company.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“The phone.””

She froze.

“What phone?””

“The one used to threaten Sophie.””

The color left her face.

“I didn’t send that.””

“Security footage says you did.””

She stared at me.

Then she whispered:

“No.””

I watched her carefully.

This time, I wasn’t looking for love.

I was looking for lies.

“I went there because I found something.””

“What?””

She opened her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in my father’s office.””

She handed it to me.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

An old one.

A picture of Claire.

Martin.

Jason.

And another person.

A person I recognized.

But not from my life.

From my company records.

“Who is this?””

Claire looked terrified.

“Your mother.””

I froze.

“My mother died when I was young.””

“I know.””

“Then why is she in this picture?””

Claire swallowed.

“Because she wasn’t just connected to your family.””

I stared at the photo.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Your mother knew about the company.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Daniel, the company you think you built alone…”

She paused.

“It was built on a secret.””

I stared at her.

“What secret?””

She looked down.

“Your father didn’t start Whitaker Home Solutions.””

The room went silent.

“Then who did?””

Claire looked at the photograph.

And whispered:

“Your mother.””

I felt like the ground disappeared.

My entire life.

My company.

My family.

Everything I thought I knew.

Gone.

Ethan stepped forward.

“Claire.””

She looked at him.

“I didn’t want him to find out this way.””

My hands trembled.

“What does my mother have to do with Martin?””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because Martin didn’t want your company.””

I frowned.

“Then what did he want?””

She looked directly at me.

“He wanted something your mother left behind.””

“What?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“The original ownership agreement.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“Because Daniel…”

She paused.

“Your mother didn’t just create Whitaker Home Solutions.””

She looked at Ethan.

“She created a trust.””

My heart pounded.

“A trust for who?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“For you.””

Before I could respond, Ethan’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Detective Harris.””

“And?””

His eyes met mine.

“They found Martin Collins.””

I waited.

“Where?””

Ethan swallowed.

“At the old Whitaker workshop.””

My stomach dropped.

“That’s impossible.””

Ethan looked at the floor.

“Daniel…”

“What?””

“He wasn’t alone.””

I felt cold.

“Who was with him?””

Ethan looked at me.

Then said:

“Your mother’s attorney.””

I froze.

Because my mother’s attorney had been dead for fifteen years.

May you like

And yet somehow…

He was standing beside Martin Collins.
