Chapter 7: The Truth Daniel Had Buried

“Ask Daniel what happened to the girl who was supposed to come home with you.””
I read the message three times.
Then I looked across the café.
Uncle Daniel was speaking quietly with Patricia. Dad was staring at the photograph of Vanessa holding a newborn. Neither seemed to notice that my hands had started shaking.
I turned my phone toward Daniel.
“What's this about?””
He read the message.
His face changed.
Not dramatically.
He simply stopped moving.
And somehow, that frightened me more than anything Vanessa had done.
“Daniel?””
He placed the photograph on the table.
“Who sent that?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you reply?””
“No.””
Dad looked up.
“What is it?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message, then slowly turned toward his brother.
“Daniel. What happened to the girl?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Patricia lowered her eyes.
Dad stood.
“I'm asking you a question.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Marcus, not here.””
“No. We've spent fifteen years not talking about this. I'm done.””
People at nearby tables began looking over.
Patricia quietly gathered her handbag.
“I think I should leave.””
Dad shook his head.
“Please stay. You've already told us more than anyone else has.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“The girl was never supposed to leave the hospital.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“After Rebecca gave birth, the hospital contacted me.””
Dad frowned.
“Why would they contact you?””
“Because Rebecca had listed me as an emergency family contact.””
“And?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“They told me there had been complications with the paperwork. They said one child needed to remain under observation.””
“Which child?””
“The girl.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened to her?””
“They said she had been transferred to another unit.””
“Where?””
“I wasn't told.””
Dad stepped closer.
“You're saying you knew about the twins?””
Daniel nodded.
“Not immediately. I found out three days later.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I tried to.””
“When?””
“After Rebecca came home.””
Dad stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“She was devastated. She kept asking about the boy. She said Vanessa had promised to bring him back. She also kept asking about the girl.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because you were a baby, Ethan. And because she didn't know what had happened.””
Daniel looked down.
“She was convinced someone had switched the records.””
Dad sat down.
“Who?””
“Adrian Cole.””
I leaned forward.
“Then why did you keep quiet?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because I made a terrible mistake.””
He reached into his coat and removed a folded document.
It was an old letter from a hospital administrator.
Dad took it.
The letter was dated October 2009.
It confirmed that a newborn girl had been transferred to a private care facility following an administrative review.
There was a signature at the bottom.
Daniel Walker.
My father stared at his brother.
“You signed this?””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought I was helping Rebecca.””
“How?””
“Adrian told me the girl had a serious medical condition. He said the hospital couldn't release her to Rebecca because the necessary specialist care wasn't available locally.””
“Did you see the medical records?””
“No.””
“Did you ask?””
“I trusted him.””
Dad threw the letter onto the table.
“You trusted a stranger with my sister-in-law's child?””
Daniel flinched.
“I was told it was temporary.””
“And then?””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“Then the facility disappeared.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
“The address was false. The telephone number stopped working. The organization closed within weeks.””
I felt sick.
“So you lost her?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Dad stood again.
“Why didn't you tell Rebecca?””
“I did.””
“What happened?””
“She blamed herself. She said she should never have trusted anyone. Then she made me promise not to tell you until she had proof.””
Dad's voice broke.
“She was my wife, Daniel.””
“I know.””
“She was searching for her children while I thought she was grieving over one.””
Daniel covered his face.
“I know.””
I looked between them.
“What happened to the boy?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“Then why did Vanessa say she knew?””
“Because she was involved in the placements.””
I sat back.
For fifteen years, people had made decisions about my life without knowing who I really was.
My mother had searched.
My uncle had signed documents.
Vanessa had lied.
Adrian had apparently arranged something that should never have happened.
And my father had been left outside the truth.
Then my phone vibrated again.
This time, the message contained a photograph.
A young man stood outside a university building.
He looked about eighteen or nineteen.
Dark hair.
A narrow face.
A small scar near his right eyebrow.
I stared.
Something about his expression felt strangely familiar.
The message beneath the photograph read:
*This is the boy Vanessa tried to erase. His name is Oliver.*
I showed Dad.
He leaned closer.
“Who is he?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel took the phone.
His face changed immediately.
“Where did you get this?””
“Someone sent it.””
Daniel zoomed in on the photograph.
Then he whispered:
“That's Adrian's son.””
Dad looked up.
“What?””
“Oliver Cole. I've seen him before.””
I stared at the photograph.
“Could he be my brother?””
Daniel didn't answer.
Patricia leaned forward.
“Where was this photograph taken?””
I showed her the location tag.
Manchester.
She closed her eyes.
“That's the university near the old placement office.””
Dad stood.
“Then we're going there.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Marcus, we need to be careful.””
“I've been careful for fifteen years. Look where that got us.””
He turned toward me.
“Ethan, we're going to find out who that boy is.””
For the first time, I saw something different in my father.
Not confusion.
Not guilt.
Determination.
We left the café together.
Daniel followed us to the car, but before we could get inside, a black vehicle pulled up beside us.
The passenger window lowered.
Vanessa sat inside.
Her face was pale.
“Marcus.””
Dad didn't move.
“What do you want?””
She looked at me.
“Ethan, get in the car.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Please.””
Dad moved between us.
“Leave him alone.””
Vanessa opened the passenger door.
“I know where the boy is.””
Dad stared at her.
“Which boy?””
“Rebecca's son.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel went still.
Dad turned.
“What does she mean?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“Daniel knows.””
I looked at my uncle.
He didn't deny it.
Vanessa continued.
“The boy was never lost. He was taken to a family in Manchester. Adrian arranged everything.””
Dad's jaw tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Rebecca refused to sign the final papers.””
“What papers?””
“The transfer documents.””
I stepped forward.
“Where is he now?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Living under another name.””
“What's his name?””
She hesitated.
Then she said:
“Oliver.””
I stared.
The same name as the young man in the photograph.
Dad's face changed.
“Is he alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you tell us?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because Adrian told me never to.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Why?””
She whispered:
“Because the family who raised him was told his biological mother had abandoned him.””
I felt tears sting my eyes.
“Does he know?””
“No.””
“Does he know about Mom?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Not everything.””
Dad's voice became cold.
“Take us to him.””
She looked at him.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian is watching him.””
A horn sounded behind us.
A second vehicle had stopped at the entrance.
A man stepped out.
Even from a distance, I recognized the face from the photographs.
Adrian Cole.
Vanessa's expression collapsed.
She whispered:
“Please don't let him see you.””
But Adrian had already seen us.
He smiled.
May you like
Then he raised his phone.
And took a picture.
