Chapter 5: The Night Danielle Was Declared Dead

I couldn't move.

Vanessa's words seemed to hang between us.

"Repeat that.""

She looked toward the front window.

"Danielle didn't die when the hospital told you she did.""

I took a step toward her.

"Are you telling me my wife was alive after the hospital declared her dead?""

Vanessa nodded.

"For almost four hours.""

I felt the room tilt.

"That's impossible.""

"I know what I saw.""

"You were there?""

She looked down.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"That night.""

I shook my head.

"I was with Danielle when she died.""

"You were there earlier. You left to get Nia's overnight bag and some clothes.""

I remembered that evening.

Danielle had been getting worse.

A nurse had suggested I go home briefly because I hadn't changed clothes in two days.

I had resisted.

Danielle had insisted.

"Go get some sleep, Marcus. Nia needs you tomorrow.""

I had kissed her forehead and promised to return.

I had been gone for less than an hour.

When I came back, Harrison was standing outside her room.

He had told me Danielle had suffered a sudden complication.

I remembered the nurse's expression.

The lowered voices.

The way everyone seemed to avoid looking directly at me.

I had entered the room and found my wife motionless.

Harrison had told me she was gone.

And I had believed him.

"You expect me to believe that you knew she was alive?""

Vanessa nodded.

"I was in the hospital.""

"Why?""

"Because Harrison called me.""

I grabbed the back of a chair.

"What happened during those four hours?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"She woke up.""

My heart pounded.

"Danielle woke up?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"She was confused. She couldn't speak properly. Harrison told everyone she was experiencing a temporary reaction to medication.""

I stared at her.

"Who is everyone?""

"Me. Two nurses. Harrison.""

"Where was I?""

"You were downstairs speaking with the hospital administrator.""

I remembered that conversation too.

A woman had approached me about funeral arrangements and medical authorization forms.

She had taken me into an office and asked me to sign several documents.

I had been devastated.

I hadn't read a single page.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Danielle kept asking for you.""

My throat tightened.

"What did Harrison do?""

"He told her you were busy.""

"Busy?""

"Then she started asking about the blue folder.""

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"She told Harrison that the original records had to be given to you. She said he couldn't keep them hidden anymore.""

"What did he say?""

"He told her it was too late.""

I stared at Vanessa.

"Too late for what?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Stop saying that! You were there!""

Her voice rose.

"I wasn't the one treating her! I was just there because Harrison told me he needed someone to help with the paperwork.""

"What paperwork?""

She looked toward the hallway.

Then she whispered:

"The death certificate.""

I felt as though someone had struck me.

"What?""

"Marcus, I know how this sounds.""

"It sounds like you're telling me someone falsified my wife's death.""

Vanessa began crying.

"I didn't know what he was doing until later.""

"Did Danielle die that night?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said, "Yes.""

"When?""

"After you came back.""

I stared at her.

"You watched her die?""

Vanessa nodded.

"She started struggling to breathe. Harrison told the nurses to prepare medication. They tried to stabilize her, but—"

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Harrison said it would destroy everyone involved.""

I laughed.

It came out broken and bitter.

"Everyone involved? My wife was dead. My daughter was growing up without her mother. What exactly did you think I had left to lose?""

Vanessa covered her face.

I stepped away from her.

"Did Harrison change her medical records?""

"I don't know.""

"Did he alter the death certificate?""

"I don't know.""

"Did he use my signature?""

She looked up.

This time, she didn't deny it.

"He told me you had signed everything.""

I felt a cold pressure in my chest.

"What did I sign?""

"An authorization for the hospital to release certain records and settle outstanding financial claims.""

"Who received the money?""

Vanessa remained silent.

I moved closer.

"Who received it?""

She whispered a name.

"The Harrison Medical Trust.""

I closed my eyes.

I had never heard of it.

Before I could ask another question, Detective Reynolds entered through the front door with two officers.

"Vanessa Carter, step away from Mr. Carter.""

She turned.

"What's happening?""

Detective Reynolds held up a document.

"We've recovered the original authorization form from Dr. Harrison's office.""

Vanessa went pale.

"How?""

"That's not your concern.""

He turned toward me.

"Marcus, we need to talk.""

I looked at the document.

"Is that the one I signed?""

"Possibly. We need handwriting analysis, but there's something else.""

He opened the folder.

"The hospital has confirmed that the document was used to authorize the transfer of a substantial portion of Danielle's insurance proceeds into a private trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

"Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

I felt my knees weaken.

Danielle's policy had been worth one million dollars.

The money had been intended to protect me and Nia.

Instead, most of it had apparently disappeared into a trust connected to the doctor who had treated her.

"Who controlled the trust?""

Detective Reynolds looked at Vanessa.

"That's complicated.""

He placed another document on the table.

The trust had three listed administrators.

Dr. Harrison.

Vanessa Carter.

And a third name.

*Daniel Brooks.*

My attorney.

I stared at the page.

"No.""

Detective Reynolds nodded.

"Your attorney's signature appears here.""

I shook my head.

"Daniel wouldn't do this.""

"Have you spoken to him today?""

"Yes.""

"Did he tell you he was involved with the trust?""

"No.""

The detective closed the folder.

"We're going to need his explanation.""

I couldn't process anything.

Daniel had been the person helping me understand the paperwork.

He had told me Danielle was frightened.

He had shown me his notes.

And now his name was on the trust.

Vanessa sat down.

"Now you understand why I wanted to talk privately.""

I turned toward her.

"You knew Daniel was involved?""

She nodded.

"When I first met Harrison, Daniel was already handling some of the paperwork.""

"How did you meet Harrison?""

"At a charity event.""

"And Daniel?""

She hesitated.

"They were working together before I came into the picture.""

Detective Reynolds asked her to explain.

Vanessa rubbed her forehead.

"Danielle had discovered that Harrison was using his position to get access to financial information. Daniel helped him establish the trust. They thought they could protect the money by moving it before anyone noticed.""

"Who is they?"" I demanded.

"Daniel and Harrison.""

"And you?""

"I was brought in later.""

"Why?""

"Because Harrison needed someone he could trust to manage the household and keep you from asking too many questions.""

The room went silent.

I looked at her.

"Did you marry me because of that money?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Detective Reynolds asked another question.

"Where is Dr. Harrison now?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"I don't know.""

"Where is the blue folder?""

"I don't know.""

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the same blue folder from her message.

"Then perhaps you can explain why your fingerprints were found on the original storage cabinet.""

Vanessa looked down.

Her hands began shaking.

"I only took what Harrison told me to take.""

"What did you take?""

She closed her eyes.

"The original patient records.""

"Whose records?""

"Danielle's.""

I stepped forward.

"Where are they?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Somewhere safe.""

"Tell me where.""

She swallowed.

"At Daniel's office.""

Detective Reynolds immediately called another officer.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel Brooks.

I answered on speaker.

"Daniel?""

His voice sounded breathless.

"Marcus, listen carefully. You need to leave that house immediately.""

I looked at the detective.

"Why?""

"Because Reynolds is looking at the wrong person.""

Detective Reynolds moved closer to the phone.

"Daniel Brooks, this is Detective Reynolds. Where are you?""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said something that made every person in the room freeze.

"Ask Marcus what he signed the night Danielle died.""

I gripped the phone.

"What did I sign, Daniel?""

His voice dropped.

May you like

"The document that made you legally responsible for everything that happened to her.""

The call disconnected.
