Thinking
The Man They Tried to Hide / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Enemy Behind the Door

The alarm screamed through the hotel.

Guests rushed out of the ballroom, confused and terrified.

The elegant wedding I had spent a year planning collapsed into chaos in less than ten seconds.

Champagne glasses shattered.

Chairs scraped across the floor.

People shouted questions nobody could answer.

But I barely heard any of it.

Because Daniel’s words were still echoing in my head.

*The person who tried to kill your mother twenty-five years ago just arrived at the hotel.*

I looked toward the entrance.

My father was already moving.

Not panicking.

Not running.

Moving with purpose.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my father was not a man who reacted without thinking.

He was a man who had survived something.

Something he never told me about.

“Marcus!””

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Stay with me.””

I looked at her.

Twenty-five years of anger.

Twenty-five years of questions.

And now, somehow, my first instinct was to protect her.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

Her eyes moved toward Richard.

And I followed.

Richard wasn’t looking at the exit.

He wasn’t looking at the guests.

He was looking at someone standing near the entrance.

Someone who had just walked through the doors.

A tall man in a dark coat.

Older.

Gray hair.

A scar running along his jaw.

The man looked around the room calmly.

Like he wasn’t walking into a disaster.

Like he was arriving exactly where he expected to be.

Richard whispered something I couldn’t hear.

But his face told me enough.

He knew him.

My father stepped in front of me.

“Stay behind me.””

I stared at him.

“Dad.””

“Marcus.””

His voice was firm.

The same voice he used when I was a child and something dangerous happened.

A voice that didn’t allow arguments.

I had spent my whole life seeing my father as a quiet man.

A patient man.

A gentle man.

But in that moment, I saw something else.

A man who had been forced to become dangerous.

The stranger looked directly at him.

Then smiled.

“Arthur Bennett.””

My father’s face went cold.

“Victor.””

The name hit the air like a gunshot.

My mother’s expression changed.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know him?””

She nodded slowly.

“That’s the man who followed me the night I disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

The stranger.

Victor.

The person who had haunted my family for twenty-five years.

He looked around.

Then his eyes landed on me.

“So this is Marcus.””

I felt my father tense.

“Don’t come near him.””

Victor smiled.

“You still protect him.””

My father stepped forward.

“You don’t get to speak about protection.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You really believe that story, don’t you?””

I looked between them.

“What story?””

Nobody answered.

Again.

I was tired of that answer.

I stepped forward.

“No more secrets.””

My father turned.

“Marcus.””

“No.””

My voice was louder than I expected.

“I’m done.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I have spent my entire life living with pieces of a story everyone else knew.””

I pointed toward Victor.

“So if he’s here because of something that happened twenty-five years ago, I deserve to know.””

Victor smiled.

“That’s exactly why I came.””

My mother moved closer.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor looked at her.

“Still protecting him?””

She stared back.

“No.””

Her voice was steady.

“I’m protecting my son.””

Something flashed in Victor’s eyes.

Anger.

For the first time, the calm mask disappeared.

“You should have stayed gone.””

My mother went still.

My father moved.

But I stopped him.

“Wait.””

I looked at Victor.

“What does that mean?””

Victor smiled.

“You really don’t know.””

He looked at Richard.

“Didn’t he tell you?””

Richard’s face tightened.

“Enough.””

Victor laughed.

“That’s the problem with secrets.””

He looked around.

“Eventually someone gets tired of carrying them.””

I looked at Richard.

“What does he mean?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Then Vanessa stepped forward.

“Dad.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was shaking.

“What did you do?””

Richard looked at his daughter.

For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Because he looked like a father realizing his child finally saw him clearly.

“Vanessa, go home.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You lied to me.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I protected you.””

“No.””

She stepped back.

“You protected yourself.””

The words hurt him.

I could see it.

But not enough.

Nothing seemed enough to make Richard admit what he had done.

Victor looked amused.

“She’s smarter than you thought.””

Richard glared.

“Shut up.””

Victor ignored him.

“Do you want to know the truth, Marcus?””

My father answered.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Dad.””

His eyes met mine.

There was fear there.

Not for himself.

For me.

But I couldn’t live inside his fear anymore.

“Yes.””

I looked at Victor.

“Tell me.””

My father closed his eyes.

My mother reached for my hand.

Victor nodded.

“Twenty-five years ago, Richard Whitmore wasn’t just stealing money.””

He looked at me.

“He was laundering it.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with my mother?””

“She found out.””

Victor paused.

“And she found out something worse.””

The room felt colder.

“What?””

Victor looked at Richard.

“Richard wasn’t working alone.””

Everyone turned.

Richard’s face changed.

Because that was the one thing he didn’t want revealed.

Victor continued.

“There were three people involved.””

My father whispered:

“No.””

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.””

He raised three fingers.

“Richard Whitmore.””

“Your former business partner.””

“And someone inside Arthur’s own family.””

My father stepped back.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know who?””

He didn’t answer.

Victor smiled.

“You do.””

My father’s silence said everything.

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

My father looked away.

And then he said a name.

A name I never expected.

“Daniel.””

The world stopped.

My uncle.

The man on the phone.

The man who claimed to be helping us.

“No.””

My mother shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

Victor smiled.

“Is it?””

My father looked devastated.

“I thought he was being forced.””

I stared.

“What are you saying?””

My father’s voice broke.

“Your uncle wasn’t just a victim.””

Nobody moved.

“He was the one who gave Richard access to the company.””

My mind couldn’t process it.

Daniel.

The man who had called me.

The man who warned me.

The man who sounded like he cared.

“You’re lying.””

Victor looked at me.

“Maybe.””

He pulled something from his coat pocket.

A small envelope.

Then threw it toward me.

It landed on the floor.

“Open it.””

Nobody moved.

I picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Old.

Faded.

A picture of three men standing outside a building.

Richard.

Daniel.

And another man.

A man I recognized.

Because I had seen him every day growing up.

My father.

But the date on the back made my blood run cold.

It was taken one week before my mother disappeared.

I looked at my father.

“Why are you in this picture?””

He looked at it.

And all the strength left his face.

Because he knew something I didn’t.

Something Victor wanted me to discover.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

The dead man.

The liar.

The man who might have saved us.

Or destroyed us.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s voice whispered:

“Marcus.””

I tightened my grip.

“Tell me the truth.””

A long silence.

Then:

“I was the reason your mother had to run.””

My heart stopped.

My mother covered her mouth.

My father looked like he had been stabbed.

Daniel continued:

“But I wasn’t the person who betrayed you.””

A pause.

Then his voice became urgent.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I waited.

“The person who betrayed your family is standing right beside you.””

Slowly…

I looked around.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

Richard.

Diane.

Everyone froze.

Because Daniel had not said a name.

He didn’t have to.

The phone went silent.

And then the hotel doors locked automatically.

All of them.

One by one.

The person behind the security system had trapped us inside.
