Chapter 9: The Man Who Never Died

I forgot how to breathe.

Not because Daniel was standing in front of me.

Because of what he said.

*You weren’t supposed to find out about Brooke yet.*

Not hello.

Not I’m sorry.

Not I’m alive.

The first thing my best friend did after six months of being gone was warn me.

About her.

Brooke froze beside me.

“Daniel.””

His eyes moved to her.

For a second, something passed between them.

Something I couldn’t understand.

A conversation without words.

Then Daniel looked back at me.

“You need to sit down.””

I almost laughed.

“You disappear for six months, let me believe you’re dead, then walk into my apartment and tell me to sit down?””

His expression didn’t change.

“I know how this looks.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

Daniel stepped inside and closed the door.

The fact that he acted like he belonged there made something inside me snap.

“You don’t get to do that.””

He stopped.

“Do what?””

“Act like this is normal.””

His face softened.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

Not from weakness.

From everything I had held inside.

“I buried you.””

Silence.

“I watched people talk about you like you were gone.””

I pointed toward him.

“I spent months wondering why I was still alive when you weren’t.””

Daniel looked down.

For the first time since he entered, he looked like a man carrying guilt.

“I’m sorry.””

The words should have helped.

They didn’t.

“You’re sorry?””

“Yes.””

“That’s all?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry because keeping you alive meant hurting you.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel glanced at Brooke.

Then back at me.

“It means if you knew I survived, they would have killed you.””

I laughed.

A bitter, exhausted laugh.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Because everyone thinks fear is a good excuse.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

That bothered me.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“You should be.””

The answer surprised me.

“You’re not going to defend yourself?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I made the choice.””

He walked closer.

“I chose to disappear.””

I looked at him.

“And you chose to let me suffer?””

His eyes closed briefly.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Brooke.

Then at me.

“Because I found out who was behind Phoenix.””

The room became still.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That was the problem with everyone connected to this.

They always knew.

They always hesitated.

They always decided what I was allowed to handle.

“Daniel.””

He took a breath.

“The person controlling Phoenix wasn’t trying to destroy Vance Technologies.””

“Then what?””

“They were trying to get access to something your mother created.””

I looked at him.

“The system.””

He nodded.

“Phoenix wasn’t just software.””

“Then what was it?””

“A blueprint.””

“For what?””

“To predict and control financial systems.””

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Daniel looked serious.

“It’s why your mother was killed.””

The words hit harder coming from him.

Because Daniel didn’t dramatize things.

He didn’t use fear.

He used facts.

“My mother discovered a way to see patterns before they happened.””

Daniel walked toward the table.

“Market crashes. Corporate failures. Hidden ownership structures.””

He looked at the flash drive.

“Your mother created something that could expose powerful people before they had time to hide.””

“And my father knew?””

“Yes.””

“Brooke knew?””

Daniel glanced at her.

“Yes.””

My eyes moved between them.

“How long have you two known?””

Brooke looked away.

Daniel answered.

“Years.””

My stomach tightened.

Years.

The word felt like a betrayal all by itself.

“You both knew.””

“Ethan—”

“No.””

I backed away.

“My entire life has been surrounded by people who knew the truth.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“You’re right.””

That stopped me.

Because I expected him to fight.

Instead, he accepted it.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because the person behind Phoenix was someone you loved.””

I froze.

The words were familiar.

Daniel had said something similar in the video.

Someone close.

Someone I would never suspect.

I looked at Brooke.

Then away.

“No.””

Daniel’s expression was painful.

“You already know.””

“Don’t.””

“Ethan.””

“Don’t say it.””

Because I didn’t want another name.

I couldn’t handle another person.

My entire life had become a list of people I trusted and reasons I shouldn’t have.

Daniel said quietly:

“It was Chad.””

I stared at him.

The silence broke.

Not with shock.

With relief.

Because somehow, I could believe Chad.

I hated that.

But I could.

“The document had Brooke’s name.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“She signed.””

“Yes.””

“She was involved.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Brooke.

Her eyes were full of tears.

“But Chad was controlling it.””

Daniel nodded.

“Chad was recruited because of his family’s financial network.””

I frowned.

“His family?””

“His father helped create the first Phoenix investors.””

I felt sick.

“So Brooke…”

“Was trying to get close enough to expose them.””

Brooke whispered:

“And failed.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You survived.””

She shook her head.

“That’s not the same thing.””

No one spoke.

Because she was right.

Surviving wasn’t the same as winning.

Daniel placed a folder on the table.

“The proof is inside.””

I didn’t touch it.

“What proof?””

“Everything.””

“Convenient.””

“It’s not.””

He opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank transfers.

Names.

The kind of evidence that could destroy people.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

One document.

One signature.

I recognized it.

My father’s.

“What is this?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“That’s the part you need to understand.””

I picked up the paper.

It was an agreement.

Dated twenty years earlier.

Before my mother died.

Before Vance Technologies existed.

At the bottom was my father’s signature.

And another name.

A name I had never seen before.

“Who is this?””

Daniel was quiet.

“Your mother’s business partner.””

I frowned.

“My mother never had a business partner.””

“Yes, she did.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“She would have told me.””

Daniel’s expression became heavy.

“She didn’t tell you because she was trying to protect you.””

Another person protecting me.

Another secret.

“Who was it?””

Daniel looked at the signature.

Then said:

“Your uncle.””

My hand froze.

“My uncle?””

Richard Vance had one brother.

A man everyone said died before I was born.

A man my father never mentioned.

“Impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Your uncle didn’t die.””

The room went cold.

“Then where is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened another file.

A photograph.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Sharp eyes.

Standing beside Chad Mercer.

I stared at the image.

“Who is that?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“That is the man who has controlled Phoenix from the beginning.””

I looked closer.

The face seemed familiar.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen his eyes before.

On someone else.

My father.

My uncle.

My family.

“What’s his name?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then said:

“Victor Vance.””

I stepped back.

The name felt like a ghost.

A ghost my family had buried.

A ghost who had been alive the entire time.

A ghost who had been watching me.

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody moved.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he wants you to.””

The phone continued ringing.

Brooke whispered:

“Ethan.””

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Hello, nephew.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I had never met Victor Vance.

But I knew his voice.

I had heard it once before.

On a voicemail my father deleted seventeen years ago.

“Your father spent years hiding me from you.””

A pause.

“But now you finally know the truth.””

I couldn’t speak.

The voice continued.

“I know Daniel is there.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Hang up.””

But I couldn’t.

Because Victor said the one thing that made my entire body go numb.

“Ethan, before you decide who the villain is…”

May you like

A pause.

“You should ask Daniel why he was the one driving the car the night your mother died.””
