Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Box

I read the name three times.

Because my brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The handwriting belonged to my mother.

I knew every curve of those letters.

She used to write notes and leave them in my lunch bag.

“Don’t forget your homework.””

“Drink water.””

“Your father loves you more than anything.””

But this note was different.

This wasn’t a reminder.

This wasn’t a message meant for a child.

It was a warning.

Arthur noticed my expression.

“Ethan?””

I looked up.

The noise of the ballroom seemed far away.

“What is this?””

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

My father rarely showed fear.

“I thought I would explain it after the ceremony.””

“After the ceremony?””

My voice came out louder than I intended.

Several guests turned.

Diane immediately looked annoyed.

“Ethan, not here.””

I ignored her.

I looked at my father.

“Who is Daniel Whitmore?””

The moment I said the name, the color disappeared from Diane’s face.

Vanessa looked confused.

Marcus stopped moving.

Nobody spoke.

That silence answered my question before anyone did.

My father slowly closed his eyes.

“Where did you see that name?””

I held up the photograph.

“On the back.””

Diane stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

I pulled it away.

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

“Then explain it.””

She looked at Arthur.

Not me.

Him.

And that was when I knew.

She knew.

My father knew.

Everyone knew except me.

Vanessa grabbed my arm gently.

“Ethan, please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

She swallowed.

“Can we talk somewhere private?””

I almost smiled.

Private.

Another word for hiding.

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“Ethan.””

“No. My father was humiliated in front of everyone because apparently he doesn’t belong here. Now I find out there’s a name connected to my family that everyone recognizes except me.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Son.””

I lowered my voice.

“Dad, tell me the truth.””

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked at the wooden box.

“You deserve to know.””

Diane immediately interrupted.

“Arthur, don’t.””

My father looked at her.

And for the first time that night, his voice became firm.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

The ballroom went silent.

Everyone knew something serious had happened.

Marcus moved closer.

“Mom, what is going on?””

Diane didn’t answer.

My father took a deep breath.

“Daniel Whitmore was my best friend.””

I stared at him.

“Your best friend?””

“Yes.””

“Then why is his name on a picture of me and Mom?””

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“Because before your mother died, she found out something.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me more than the answer.

“She found out Daniel wasn’t just my friend.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“Then what was he?””

My father looked at Diane.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“He was your biological father.””

The world stopped.

No music.

No guests.

No wedding.

Just one sentence.

My biological father.

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my mind had no other way to react.

“That’s impossible.””

Arthur looked devastated.

“I wanted to tell you sooner.””

“You wanted to?””

My voice cracked.

“You let me believe my entire life…”

“I was your father.””

The words came quickly.

Desperate.

“I changed your diapers. I stayed awake when you were sick. I taught you how to ride a bike. I held your mother’s hand when she died.””

His eyes filled.

“Blood does not make someone a father.””

I looked away.

Because he was right.

He was always right.

But the question remained.

“Why didn’t Mom tell me?””

Arthur looked at the photograph.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Before he could answer, Diane spoke quietly.

“Of destroying this family.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

She didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at her mother.

“Mom?””

Diane’s face was cold.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“No,” I said.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Her expression tightened.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the ballroom.

At the guests.

At the decorations.

At the wedding she had spent months controlling.

Then she said something that made my stomach drop.

“Daniel Whitmore didn’t die by accident.””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Marcus looked at his mother.

“What are you saying?””

Diane whispered,

“He was murdered.””

My father’s face went pale.

I looked between them.

“What does this have to do with my father?””

Arthur didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

Because I had spent my entire life believing my father was the strongest man I knew.

But standing there, holding a photograph that changed my identity, he looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

Soft.

Shaking.

“Is this Ethan Bennett?””

“Yes.””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“You need to leave that wedding immediately.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a breath.

“My name is Claire Whitmore.””

I froze.

“Whitmore?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then the words came.

“I’m Daniel Whitmore’s daughter.””

I looked at Vanessa.

At Diane.

At my father.

And Claire whispered the sentence that changed the wedding forever.

“Your father didn’t raise you because he wanted to hide the truth, Ethan.””

May you like

A tremble entered her voice.

“He raised you because he was trying to protect you from the people who killed mine.””
