Chapter 8: The House Under Siege

Naomi pushed Ethan behind the stone pillar beside the workshop door.

“Stay down.””

Another gunshot shattered the silence.

Glass rained across the courtyard.

Ethan stared toward the main house.

“What the hell is happening?””

“Someone wants us frightened enough to make a mistake.””

Naomi drew her phone and checked the signal.

No service.

The estate's security network had been disabled, the lights were out, and the emergency alarm continued to howl through the grounds.

She moved toward the workshop window and peered through a narrow gap in the curtains.

Two figures crossed the courtyard.

One carried a flashlight.

The other held a handgun low against his thigh.

Naomi recognized the taller man's build.

Grant Mercer.

“Ethan, do you know another way off the property?””

“The old service road. It runs behind the greenhouse and connects to the public lane.””

“Can you get us there without crossing the courtyard?””

“Yes.””

“Then we move now.””

They slipped through the workshop's rear door and crossed the narrow garden path. Rainwater soaked Naomi's shoes. The air smelled of wet earth and crushed leaves.

Behind them, a voice shouted from the main house.

“Check the conservatory!””

Another voice answered, “The west wing is clear!””

Naomi and Ethan reached the greenhouse.

She stopped beside the door and listened.

Footsteps approached from the other side.

She pulled Ethan behind a row of tall planters just as a flashlight beam swept across the glass.

A man entered the greenhouse.

“Mercer wants the files,” he muttered into his radio.

“He says the girl is still alive, but the maid has the original evidence.””

Naomi exchanged a glance with Ethan.

The man continued walking, his boots scraping against the tiled floor.

When he reached the far end, Naomi moved.

She caught his wrist, forced the gun toward the ground, and drove him against the metal shelving. He struggled, but she used his momentum to pin him between the shelves and the wall.

“Who sent you?”” she demanded.

He clenched his jaw.

“Get off me.””

Naomi tightened her grip.

“Who sent you?””

He looked toward Ethan.

Then he laughed.

“You really don't know, do you?””

“Know what?””

The man's eyes shifted toward the greenhouse entrance.

“Ask the billionaire why his father paid for the operation.””

Naomi felt her stomach drop.

Before she could question him further, a voice called from outside.

“Frank? Report.””

The man suddenly drove his elbow backward.

Naomi lost her grip for half a second.

He twisted free, struck the shelf, and sent a row of terracotta pots crashing to the floor.

Ethan lunged to help her.

The man shoved past him and ran through the opposite door.

Naomi started after him, but Ethan caught her arm.

“Naomi, stop!””

She turned.

“He has a gun.””

“So do the others. We need to get out.””

The words forced her to reconsider.

They reached the service road just as a black SUV emerged from behind the greenhouse.

Its headlights flooded the path.

Naomi raised an arm to shield her eyes.

The driver's door opened.

Vanessa Sterling stepped out.

She was no longer wearing the cream dress from dinner. She had changed into black trousers and a fitted coat, her platinum hair pulled tightly behind her head.

In her right hand was a small pistol.

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Vanessa?””

She aimed the weapon at the ground between them.

“Don't move.””

Naomi positioned herself slightly in front of Ethan.

“Put the gun down, Vanessa.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You really are extraordinary. You break into private offices, steal confidential documents, and now you think you can give me orders in my own house.””

“Your house?””

“Whitmore House is going to belong to me in six weeks.””

“Not if Ethan refuses to marry you.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Ethan will do exactly what I tell him to do.””

He stepped forward.

“Why are you doing this?””

She turned the gun toward him.

“Because your father left me no choice.””

“My father is dead.””

“Yes,” she said.

“And if he had understood what was good for him, he might still be alive.””

Ethan recoiled.

Naomi felt him move beside her.

“Did you kill him?”” he asked.

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

For a second, she looked almost offended.

“You think I wanted Richard dead?””

“Did you?””

She lowered the weapon slightly.

“Your father was a stubborn old man. He believed that money could solve every problem and that people would forgive him if he offered enough of it. He didn't understand that some decisions cannot be reversed.””

“What decisions?””

Vanessa looked toward the main house.

“Ask him.””

“He's dead!””

“And that's why we're having this conversation.””

Naomi watched her closely.

Vanessa wasn't merely angry.

She was buying time.

Somewhere behind them, Mercer was moving through the grounds, searching for the files. Vanessa wanted Ethan to listen, perhaps because she believed she could still manipulate him into cooperating.

Naomi decided to let her talk.

“What did Richard do?”” she asked.

Vanessa looked at her.

“Your employer was not the innocent victim you imagine. He financed a private security operation that was supposed to protect valuable witnesses. Instead, it became a tool for intimidation. People were followed, evidence was stolen, and certain witnesses were persuaded to change their statements.””

“Daniel Hale.””

“Daniel Hale was going to expose the entire operation.””

“So you arranged his murder?””

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

“I didn't pull the trigger.””

The admission landed like a stone.

Ethan stared at her.

“You paid someone to do it?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I paid for a problem to be handled.””

“His daughter was seventeen!””

“She wasn't supposed to be there.””

The words escaped before Vanessa could stop them.

Naomi's grip tightened around the encrypted drive in her pocket.

“You knew Lily was in the hotel.””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Who told you that name?””

Naomi said nothing.

Vanessa raised the pistol again.

“Give me the files.””

“No.””

“Naomi, don't be stupid.””

“You've already admitted involvement in a murder. You think threatening us is going to make that disappear?””

Vanessa's eyes burned.

“You have no idea how many people are involved. You think you can take me down and walk away? There are judges, police officers, corporate directors, and politicians who owe my family everything they have.””

“Then they'll have a lot to explain.””

Vanessa took a step forward.

“Give me the drive.””

Ethan moved between them.

“No.””

She stared at him.

“Ethan, get out of the way.””

“You told me you loved me.””

“I do.””

“You killed my father.””

“I protected our future.””

“You stole my signature.””

“I secured your inheritance.””

“You drugged me.””

Vanessa's expression went still.

The silence that followed was more frightening than the gun.

Ethan's voice shook.

“Were you giving me the same supplements you gave my father?””

Vanessa looked at the weapon in her hand.

Then at Naomi.

Finally, she smiled.

“You should have taken the capsules when I asked you to.””

Ethan went pale.

Naomi felt a cold fury rise inside her.

“What was in them?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Enough to keep him calm. Enough to make him sleep. Enough to stop him asking questions when he should have been signing documents.””

“You could have killed him.””

“He was never the target.””

“Your fiancé was a target every time you handed him a pill.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You think this is simple? You think I woke up one morning and decided to become a monster?”” Her voice rose.

“My father built the Sterling empire with nothing but his hands and a small loan. Your father inherited billions and still believed he could dictate terms to everyone around him. He thought he could use our money, our contacts, our people, and then suddenly decide he wanted to be a saint.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Your family paid for Daniel's murder.””

“Your father approved the first payment.””

Naomi felt the ground shift beneath her.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

“He signed the authorization. He knew what the money was for. When Daniel refused to cooperate, Richard wanted the problem contained. I only made sure the operation continued.””

“That's a lie,” Ethan said.

“Is it? Look at the records. Your father approved the payment, and then he panicked when he realized the investigation might reach him.

He tried to bury the operation. When he couldn't, he began threatening to expose everyone involved.””

Naomi remembered Richard's recording.

I did not authorize the use of these funds for any illegal operation.

Either he had lied in the recording, or Vanessa was twisting the truth to save herself.

Perhaps the most dangerous possibility was that both had done terrible things and each had tried to hide behind the other's guilt.

“Who killed Daniel Hale?”” Naomi asked.

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“Grant Mercer arranged it.””

“And Richard?””

Vanessa's eyes flickered again.

“He became inconvenient.””

Ethan staggered backward.

Naomi held her position.

“Did you poison Richard Whitmore?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“I gave him medication.””

“Medication he didn't know he was taking?””

“He refused to listen. He was going to destroy everything.””

“Did you poison him?””

Vanessa raised the gun.

“Enough!””

The word echoed across the service road.

A voice came from behind the SUV.

“Put the weapon down, Vanessa.””

Grant Mercer stepped into the headlights.

He held his own pistol.

For one moment, Vanessa looked genuinely relieved.

“Grant. Thank God.””

Mercer glanced at Ethan, then at Naomi.

“Give me the drive, Naomi.””

“You first,” Naomi replied.

Mercer sighed.

“Why must you always make things difficult?””

“Because the last time I trusted you, a man died and a seventeen-year-old girl spent three years hiding from the truth.””

Mercer's expression hardened.

“You have no idea what happened in Philadelphia.””

“I know you were there.””

“Then you know I was doing my job.””

“You entered Daniel's room forty-seven seconds before he died.””

Mercer stopped moving.

Naomi watched the recognition register.

“You saw the footage,” he said.

“Yes.””

“Then you should understand why it must never be released.””

Ethan stared at him.

“You killed Daniel Hale?””

Mercer looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her gun slightly.

“Tell him,” she said.

Mercer's face darkened.

“Shut up.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Now you want silence? After all these years?””

Mercer took a step toward her.

“You were supposed to secure the documents, not start confessing to everyone who asks a question.””

Naomi's pulse quickened.

There it was.

The admission she needed.

“You killed Daniel Hale because he threatened to expose Sterling Meridian,” she said.

Mercer looked at her.

“Daniel was going to destroy an operation that protected dozens of people.””

“By murdering him?””

“He was given a chance to cooperate.””

“And when he refused?””

Mercer said nothing.

Naomi felt the old grief sharpen into something clear and terrible.

“You murdered him.””

Mercer raised his weapon.

“I did what I had to do.””

Ethan moved toward Naomi.

“Stay behind me.””

Naomi almost laughed at the absurdity of it.

He was the one with no tactical training, standing between a gunman and the woman who had spent years protecting people from men like him.

Then the lights of the main house came back on.

A siren sounded in the distance.

Mercer looked toward the road.

“What did you do?””

Naomi kept her eyes on him.

“Before the network went down, I sent a copy of the evidence to an external contact. If anything happened to us, the files would be released.””

It was a bluff.

But Mercer didn't know that.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You said the network was secure!””

“It was.””

“Then why are there sirens?””

Mercer's expression changed.

Naomi saw the moment he understood that the situation was slipping beyond his control.

He grabbed Vanessa's arm.

“We're leaving.””

She pulled away.

“I'm not going anywhere with you.””

“You don't have a choice.””

Vanessa raised her pistol toward him.

Mercer reacted instantly.

A gunshot split the night.

Vanessa screamed and dropped to one knee, clutching her upper arm. The pistol fell onto the gravel.

Ethan lunged toward her.

Naomi caught his shoulder.

“Don't!””

Mercer turned his weapon toward them.

But the sirens were closer now, and blue lights flashed beyond the estate gates.

He backed toward the SUV.

“Stay where you are!””

He climbed into the driver's seat and sped down the service road, smashing through the half-open gate.

Naomi dropped beside Vanessa.

Blood darkened the sleeve of her coat.

Ethan knelt beside them, his hands shaking.

“Vanessa, look at me.””

She stared at him, tears running down her face.

“Ethan, I didn't mean for this to happen.””

Naomi pressed a folded cloth against the wound.

“Save your breath. The ambulance is coming.””

Vanessa grabbed Naomi's wrist.

“You don't understand,” she whispered.

Naomi looked at her.

“Then explain it.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with terror.

“Mercer didn't kill Richard.””

Naomi froze.

Vanessa tightened her grip.

“He didn't kill Daniel, either. He took the money, arranged the cover-up, and made sure the evidence disappeared. But the person who ordered the murders was someone else.””

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward the main house.

Then she whispered a name that made Ethan recoil.

“Your mother.””

Before Naomi could respond, Vanessa's eyes rolled backward.

Her hand went limp.

May you like

And from the darkness beyond the greenhouse came the sound of a car engine starting.

Someone else was still on the estate.
