Chapter 9: The Night the Sterling Empire Burned
The Sterling mansion was already burning when we reached the estate.
Flames crawled along the east wing, illuminating the windows in violent orange flashes. Smoke rolled over the roof and drifted across the gardens. Fire engines had not arrived, and the estate gates stood open.
Daniel abandoned the SUV before it had fully stopped.
“Mother!””
I caught his arm.
“Wait!””
He turned on me.
“My mother is inside!””
“And if you run into a burning building without knowing where the fire started, you could die before reaching her.””
He stared at the mansion, chest heaving.
Then he forced himself to stop.
Lucas climbed out behind us.
“The archive room is in the east wing,” he said.
“That's where Graham keeps the original file.””
Daniel looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because I helped him move it.””
My stomach tightened.
“When?””
“Three days ago. He told me it was a collection of financial records. He said he needed to move them before the government discovered what my father had done.””
Lucas looked toward the flames.
“I didn't know the file contained the names of the children.””
“Did you know what he was planning tonight?”” I asked.
“No.””
He swallowed.
“But I knew he was going to destroy something.””
A crash echoed from the mansion.
We all turned.
The east wing's upper windows burst outward, scattering glass across the garden.
Daniel started forward again.
I grabbed his shoulder.
“Do you know another entrance?””
“The underground passage connects to the library.””
“Then take us there.””
We ran along the side of the house, keeping below the windows. The smoke thickened near the east garden, and I could hear alarms ringing inside.
At the service entrance, the electronic lock had been torn from the wall.
Someone had forced it open.
I pulled my sleeve over my nose and entered.
The corridor was dark except for the emergency lights. Smoke hung near the ceiling. A silver serving tray lay overturned beside a housekeeping cart.
Then I saw Eleanor.
She was crouched beside the wall, coughing violently, one hand pressed against her forehead.
Daniel dropped beside her.
“Mother!””
She looked up.
“Daniel?””
He wrapped his arms around her.
“Are you hurt?””
“My head. I hit it when the lights went out.””
“Can you walk?””
She nodded, though her knees trembled.
I helped her stand.
“Where is Marcus?””
Eleanor looked toward the stairwell.
“He tried to stop Graham. Graham shot him.””
Daniel went pale.
“Is he dead?””
“I don't know.””
A crash sounded from the upper floor.
Eleanor grabbed Daniel's arm.
“He's looking for the file.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“Then we have to get to the archive room.””
Eleanor stared at him.
“Who are you?””
Lucas hesitated.
I took his hand.
“Mother, this is Lucas.””
Her face changed.
For a moment, she seemed unable to breathe.
Then she reached toward him.
“Robert's child?””
“No,” I said.
“Mine.””
Eleanor lowered her hand.
She looked at Lucas with an expression I couldn't interpret.
“I am sorry,” she whispered.
Lucas said nothing.
He had every reason not to forgive her.
I turned toward the corridor.
“We need to move.””
We reached the underground passage through the library. Smoke had begun seeping through the floorboards above us, and the heat was becoming unbearable.
At the bottom of the stairs, Daniel unlocked the archive room.
The door opened.
Inside, the shelves had been emptied. Filing cabinets lay overturned, and papers covered the floor.
The original file was gone.
Lucas moved toward the far wall.
“He hid it behind the panel.””
He pulled at a section of wood beneath the shelves. The panel came loose, revealing a narrow cavity.
Empty.
He stared at it.
“No.””
Daniel looked around the room.
“Where else could he have put it?””
Lucas shook his head.
“He told me this was the only place.””
I crouched beside the cavity.
There were fresh scratches on the wood, and a small piece of black plastic lay near the edge.
I picked it up.
A fragment of a portable storage case.
“Graham removed the file recently,” I said.
“But he didn't take everything.””
I examined the cavity again.
Behind the rear panel, I found a small envelope taped to the wood.
My name was written across it in my mother's handwriting.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a folded letter and a photograph.
The photograph showed my mother standing beside a younger Graham Voss. She was holding a baby.
Me.
On the back, she had written:
If you are reading this, the truth has finally reached you. I am sorry I could not protect you from him.
I unfolded the letter.
Mara,
Robert Sterling was never your son's father. Graham is. But there is another truth you must understand.
Graham did not begin the identity program to hide his own children. He began it because he discovered that powerful people were buying children through a network of false adoptions and forged birth records. He believed he could control the system by controlling the records.
Then he discovered he could profit from it.
I helped him at first because I believed he was trying to expose the people responsible. When I realized what he had become, I stole the original records and gave them to Adrian.
Adrian promised to protect you and the child.
I failed you both.
But I did not fail to hide the truth.
The original file is not a document. It is a person.
I stopped reading.
Daniel leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
I turned the page.
The final paragraph was written in darker ink.
Graham's first child was never registered under his real identity. He was moved through the program before you were born. He is the only person who can authenticate the original records because his genetic profile was used to create the first false inheritance claim.
You know him.
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Lucas.
He stared back at me, confused.
Then he shook his head.
“No.””
I turned the photograph over again.
Beneath my mother's message was a name.
*THOMAS REED.*
For a moment, the room seemed to fall silent around me.
Thomas had been the person who brought me to the Sterling estate. He had arranged the investigation, given me the assignment, and helped me believe that we were trying to uncover the truth.
He had known where my son was.
He had known my mother was alive.
And now her letter suggested that he was the person who could authenticate the original records.
Daniel took the letter from me.
“Thomas is Graham's first child?””
“I don't know,” I said.
“But we're going to find out.””
Eleanor leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.
“There is something I never told you about Thomas.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Robert Sterling paid for his education. He called it charity, but he visited Thomas privately every year.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because he believed Thomas was the only person who could eventually bring down Graham Voss.””
The floor shook above us.
A section of the ceiling collapsed near the entrance, sending dust and smoke into the room.
Daniel grabbed Eleanor.
“We have to get out!””
Lucas picked up the letter.
“Not without the file.””
“The file is gone!”” Daniel shouted.
“No,” Lucas replied.
“Graham said the file could only be destroyed by the person who created it.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Lucas looked at the silver flash drive in his hand.
“Graham told me the records were encrypted with a key that belonged to Thomas. He said that even if someone stole the files, they couldn't open them without Thomas's biometric authorization.””
I thought of the silver flash drive Victor had shown us in the study.
The key wasn't a physical object.
It was a person.
Thomas Reed.
My phone rang.
His name appeared on the screen.
I answered immediately.
“Thomas, where are you?””
“At the estate.””
“Where?””
“In the north garden.””
“Stay there. We're coming out.””
“No, Mara. Listen to me. Graham has the original records, but he can't destroy them without my authorization.””
“Why do you have the key?””
A pause.
Then Thomas said, “Because I'm his son.””
I closed my eyes.
The words were no longer a surprise.
They were a confirmation.
Thomas continued.
“My mother died when I was young. Graham told me she abandoned me. Robert Sterling took me in and paid for my education. He wanted me to become someone who could expose Graham if he ever went too far.””
“Did you know about my son?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know my mother was alive?””
“Yes.””
Anger rose through me so quickly that I could barely speak.
“You used me.””
“I was trying to find the records.””
“You sent me into that house without telling me the man who destroyed my life was your father!””
“I thought I could keep you safe.””
“Everyone thinks they can keep me safe!””
My voice echoed through the archive room.
“Everyone decides what I can know, what I can survive, and what I deserve. I'm done with that.””
Thomas was silent for a moment.
Then he said, “You're right.””
The simple admission caught me off guard.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes, you should have.””
“But if you want to save your mother and your son, you need to bring the silver drive to the north garden. Graham is waiting for me there.””
I looked at Lucas.
He held the drive tightly.
“Why does Graham want you?””
“Because if I authenticate the original records, every person connected to Blackridge will be exposed. He can't allow that to happen.””
“And if you refuse?””
“He'll kill me.””
I looked at the burning ceiling.
“Then we'll make sure he doesn't get the chance.””
We escaped through the underground passage and emerged into the north garden. Firefighters had finally arrived, but the main driveway was blocked by emergency vehicles.
Thomas stood beneath a stone archway, his hands raised.
Graham Voss stood several feet away, holding a pistol.
He looked calm.
Almost bored.
“Thank you for bringing them,” Graham said when he saw me.
Thomas's face twisted.
“I didn't bring anyone.””
Graham smiled.
“You always were a disappointing son.””
Thomas flinched.
Graham turned toward Lucas.
“And there he is. My other son.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“You don't get to call yourself my father.””
Graham raised the pistol.
“You wouldn't exist without me.””
Lucas's voice shook, but he didn't retreat.
“Neither would any of the lies you built your life around.””
Graham's smile disappeared.
He pointed the gun at Thomas.
“Give me the drive.””
Thomas looked at me.
I understood.
The silver drive wasn't merely evidence. It was the key that could unlock the records and expose the entire network.
I held it up.
“Let him go.””
Graham laughed.
“You still believe you can negotiate with me?””
“No. I believe you need the drive more than you want to admit.””
His eyes narrowed.
“Hand it over.””
I took one step forward.
“You spent twenty-one years convincing my son that I abandoned him. You kept my mother locked away. You used my grief to control me. And now you want me to save you from the consequences?””
Graham raised the gun toward me.
“I'm giving you one last chance.””
I looked at Thomas.
He nodded almost imperceptibly.
I threw the silver drive toward the fountain.
Graham's attention followed it for a fraction of a second.
That was all Thomas needed.
He lunged.
The gun fired.
Thomas fell.
Daniel shouted.
Lucas rushed toward his brother.
Graham swung the pistol toward me.
But before he could fire again, Eleanor stepped between us.
She struck Graham's arm with a heavy brass candlestick she had carried from the house.
The gun flew from his hand.
I tackled him to the ground.
He fought violently, driving his knee into my ribs and clawing at my face. I caught his wrist and forced it behind his back.
“It's over!”” I shouted.
He laughed into the grass.
“No, Mara. You still don't understand.””
I tightened my grip.
“What?””
Graham turned his head toward the mansion.
The fire had reached the central roof.
He smiled.
“Even if you arrest me, the records will destroy your son.””
Lucas looked up from Thomas's side.
“What does that mean?””
Graham's eyes gleamed.
“It means the original file contains proof that you weren't the only child moved through the program.””
He looked at Daniel.
“And it contains proof that Daniel Sterling's entire inheritance was built on a lie.””
Then he leaned closer to me and whispered the words that made my blood turn cold.
“Your son isn't the heir, Mara.””
May you like
He smiled.
“He's the evidence that the real heir is already inside this family.””
