Chapter 12: The Secret Luca Carried
The room became silent.
Not normal silence.
The kind where every person is waiting for one person to speak.
And nobody wants to be the first.
I looked at Luca.
He didn’t look at me.
That hurt.
More than anything Victor had said.
Because lies were one thing.
But silence?
Silence meant there was something to hide.
“Luca.””
He closed his eyes.
“Avery.””
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Nothing.
My chest tightened.
“Tell me.””
Matteo looked away.
My father stared at the floor.
Nobody defended him.
Nobody.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Luca finally looked at me.
“I was there.””
The words barely left his mouth.
The world stopped.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“When my mother died?””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
A broken sound.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I promised her.””
“Stop saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Stop using my mother as the reason you kept secrets from me.””
His expression changed.
Pain.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Luca looked at the floor.
“Because the truth would destroy the way you remembered her.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
He took a breath.
“The night your mother died, she wasn’t running from Victor.””
I waited.
“She was running from me.””
My stomach dropped.
“Why?””
“Because I made a mistake.””
The room felt colder.
“What mistake?””
Luca looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him, he looked completely powerless.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
I said nothing.
Because somehow I already knew.
“The night Elena died, she had proof against Victor.””
“The evidence?””
“Yes.””
“She was going to expose him.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Luca swallowed.
“I told someone where she was.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Matteo?””
Matteo closed his eyes.
“No.””
The answer came from Luca.
“Not Matteo.””
I froze.
“Then who?””
His voice was barely audible.
“My father’s most trusted advisor.””
“Who?””
Luca looked at the necklace.
Then at me.
“Your grandmother.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Nobody moved.
“Eleanor?””
Luca nodded.
“No.””
My mind rejected it.
“My grandmother raised me.””
“Yes.””
“She loved me.””
“Yes.””
“She protected me.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
Luca’s face tightened.
“Because she was protecting you.””
That made no sense.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Luca sat down slowly.
The powerful man disappeared.
The feared man disappeared.
There was only someone carrying a memory that had haunted him.
“Your grandmother found out Victor planned to kill your father.””
I listened.
“She tried to stop him.””
“Then why blame her?””
“Because she made a deal.””
My throat tightened.
“With who?””
“Victor.””
Silence.
“She offered him something in exchange for your father’s life.””
“What?””
Luca looked at me.
“You.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
“She told Victor you were the last piece of leverage.””
I backed away.
“No.””
“She convinced him you were safer hidden.””
“No.””
“Avery.””
I covered my ears.
“No.””
Because suddenly every secret had a new meaning.
Every lie.
Every missing piece.
My grandmother hadn’t just hidden the truth.
She had negotiated with the people who wanted it buried.
My phone rang again.
Victor.
Nobody moved.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
His voice was calm.
“I wanted you to know.””
“Know what?””
“That Luca has spent twelve years pretending he saved you.””
I looked at Luca.
Victor continued.
“He didn’t save you.””
My hand tightened.
“What did he do?””
The answer came softly.
“He was the reason your mother died.””
I looked at Luca.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Praying he would deny it.
He didn’t.
Instead, he whispered:
“He’s right.””
My heart shattered.
May you like
And then Luca said the words I never expected.
“I killed your mother.””
