Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the House
Adrian stared at the picture on his phone.
For several seconds, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Lily.
Sleeping.
In her room.
A photograph taken while she was inside the house.
The timestamp was clear.
2:13 a.m.
The same night.
The same mansion.
Someone had been close enough to enter her room.
Close enough to stand beside her bed.
Close enough to take a picture.
His first instinct was anger.
His second was fear.
Not for himself.
Never for himself.
For Lily.
He immediately stood.
“Marcus.””
The security manager answered on the first ring.
“Sir?””
“Wake up the security team.””
A pause.
“Is something wrong?””
“Someone was inside Lily’s room tonight.””
Silence.
Then Marcus’ voice changed.
“I’m coming.””
Adrian looked at the photograph again.
The room behind Lily was dark.
But something in the corner caught his attention.
A shadow.
A shape.
He zoomed in.
The image became blurry.
But he saw enough.
A reflection in the mirror.
Someone standing behind the camera.
Someone who had taken the picture.
Someone who wanted him to know they could reach his daughter whenever they wanted.
His phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*You should have protected Elena. Protecting Lily won’t fix your mistake.*
Adrian’s face tightened.
Because whoever was sending these messages wasn’t just threatening him.
They knew about Elena.
They knew about the past.
They knew exactly where to hurt him.
Twenty minutes later, Marcus arrived with two security specialists.
They moved through the mansion quietly.
Every room was checked.
Every entrance was examined.
Nothing.
No broken locks.
No open windows.
No signs of forced entry.
That was the most frightening part.
Because it meant the person didn’t need to break in.
They already had access.
Marcus stood in Lily’s bedroom doorway.
“Sir.””
Adrian looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus pointed at the lock.
“It wasn’t opened from outside.””
Adrian frowned.
“Then how?””
Marcus looked serious.
“Someone used a key.””
The room became silent.
A key.
Someone with a key.
Someone who belonged here.
Adrian walked into Lily’s room.
Her stuffed animals were arranged neatly on the shelf.
Her drawings covered the wall.
A picture of her and Adrian sat beside her bed.
Everything looked normal.
But it didn’t feel normal anymore.
Because now he understood something.
The threat wasn’t outside his family.
It was inside.
Marcus searched the room.
Then stopped.
“Sir.””
Adrian turned.
“What?””
Marcus held something small.
A piece of paper.
It had been hidden underneath Lily’s pillow.
Adrian took it.
Only one sentence was written.
*Ask yourself why Elena hid the truth from you.*
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Again.
Elena.
Everything returned to her.
The letter.
The photograph.
The recordings.
The warning.
He looked at Marcus.
“Find Thomas Vale.””
“We’re working on it.””
“Faster.””
Marcus nodded.
Then hesitated.
“There’s something else.””
“What?””
“The photograph sent to you.””
“Yes?””
“It wasn’t taken tonight.””
Adrian looked confused.
“What do you mean?””
Marcus showed him the digital information.
“The file was created three days ago.””
Adrian stared.
Three days.
Someone had taken the picture earlier.
Then waited.
They weren’t acting emotionally.
They were planning.
“They’ve been watching her for days.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
Adrian looked toward Lily’s bed.
A cold anger settled over him.
No more waiting.
No more guessing.
No more allowing people to control the story.
The next morning, Adrian made a decision.
He would not confront Vanessa.
Not yet.
He would not accuse her without proof.
Not because he trusted her.
Because he didn’t.
But because he knew people like Vanessa.
They didn’t panic when cornered.
They destroyed evidence.
They changed stories.
They made themselves victims.
So Adrian did something unexpected.
He acted like nothing had changed.
At breakfast, Vanessa walked into the dining room.
She looked surprised to see him smiling.
“Good morning.””
“Good morning.””
She sat down.
“Lily still sleeping?””
“No.””
Adrian poured coffee.
“She’s with the nanny.””
Vanessa studied him.
She was searching for something.
Anger.
Suspicion.
Fear.
But Adrian gave her nothing.
“You seem calmer.””
“I am.””
“Really?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa smiled slightly.
“Did you find what you were looking for?””
Adrian looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
She shrugged.
“I mean Elena’s things.””
A dangerous question.
A test.
Adrian understood immediately.
“She left a lot behind.””
Vanessa looked down.
“She did.””
“Did you know about the letter?””
The question was sudden.
Too sudden.
Vanessa’s hand stopped.
Only briefly.
But it was enough.
“No.””
Adrian watched carefully.
“Interesting.””
“What is?””
“You answered quickly.””
Vanessa smiled.
“I have nothing to hide.””
Adrian leaned back.
“Everyone says that when they do.””
Her expression changed.
Just slightly.
Then the doorbell rang.
The timing was perfect.
A delivery worker stood outside holding a package.
“Mr. Hawthorne?””
“Yes.””
“This was delivered for you.””
Adrian looked at the package.
No return address.
Only his name.
Vanessa watched.
“Who sent it?””
“I don’t know.””
He opened it carefully.
Inside was an old voice recorder.
Not a digital one.
A small device from years ago.
His heart stopped.
Because he recognized it.
Elena used one exactly like this.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena’s voice.
Adrian froze.
“Adrian… if you’re hearing this, then I wasn’t able to tell you myself.””
Vanessa stood up.
“What is that?””
He ignored her.
The recording continued.
“I need you to listen carefully. Do not believe everything you’ve been told.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Her voice.
After five years.
The sound nearly broke him.
“Someone has been manipulating events around us. Someone who knows how much you trust them.””
A pause.
Then Elena whispered:
“Vanessa is not working alone.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone pale.
The recording continued.
“Thomas knows the truth. He helped me hide the evidence because I was afraid.””
Adrian’s breath caught.
Thomas.
The name again.
“I tried to leave. I tried to take Lily somewhere safe. But they found out.””
The room became silent.
Lily’s name.
Safe.
Leave.
Those words changed everything.
Then Elena said:
“Adrian, the night I died wasn’t an accident.””
The recording stopped.
Just like that.
Everyone froze.
Adrian pressed the button again.
Nothing.
The battery was dead.
Or removed.
Someone wanted him to hear only enough.
Not everything.
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Is it?””
She shook her head.
“Elena was sick.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because she was.
For the first time, Adrian saw it clearly.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t offended.
She was afraid.
That afternoon, Adrian met Marcus privately.
“I found Thomas.””
Adrian looked up.
“Where?””
“An old property outside the city.””
“Is he alive?””
“Yes.””
“Take me there.””
Marcus hesitated.
“Sir, it could be dangerous.””
Adrian looked at him.
“My daughter was threatened inside my own house.””
A pause.
“I’m going.””
The old property was abandoned.
A small house surrounded by trees.
No neighbors.
No cameras.
No signs anyone lived there.
Marcus knocked.
Nothing.
He knocked again.
Still nothing.
Then Adrian noticed something.
The door wasn’t locked.
He pushed it open.
Inside, the house was dark.
Dust covered everything.
But someone had been there recently.
A chair was still warm.
A cup of coffee sat on the table.
Marcus moved forward.
“Sir.””
On the wall was a collection of photographs.
Adrian walked closer.
His heart stopped.
The photographs were of him.
Elena.
Lily.
Vanessa.
Thomas.
Years of memories.
Years of watching.
Years of secrets.
Then he saw one picture in the center.
A picture of Elena holding baby Lily.
Written underneath:
*The child is the key.*
Adrian stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Before Marcus could answer, a voice came from behind them.
“You finally found me.””
They turned.
An older man stood in the doorway.
Thomas Vale.
Adrian stared.
“You know why I’m here.””
Thomas looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Just broken.
“Yes.””
“Tell me the truth.””
Thomas looked at the photographs.
Then at Adrian.
“I tried to warn you.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You helped hide the truth.””
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Thomas swallowed.
“Because Elena made me promise.””
“Promise what?””
Thomas looked toward the picture of Lily.
“To protect the one person they couldn’t control.””
Adrian’s voice became quiet.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at him.
And said the words Adrian never expected.
“Your daughter.””
A long silence followed.
Then Thomas continued:
“Adrian, Vanessa wasn’t trying to destroy your marriage.””
He paused.
“She was trying to take control of everything Elena left behind.””
“What did Elena leave?””
Thomas looked at him.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Thomas’ face turned serious.
“Proof that the person behind all of this was never Vanessa.””
Adrian froze.
“What are you saying?””
Thomas took a breath.
“The person who started this was someone much closer.””
The lights suddenly went out.
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Thomas looked toward the window.
His face changed.
“They found us.””
Adrian turned.
“Who?””
Thomas whispered:
May you like
“The person who has been watching Lily since the beginning.””
And then the front door slowly opened.
