Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Camera

The frozen image remained on the screen.

Adrian couldn’t move.

He couldn’t speak.

He simply stared at the person captured by the hidden camera.

The face.

The posture.

The familiar way they walked through the house as if they owned every hallway, every room, every secret.

Marcus looked from the screen to Adrian.

“Sir…”

Adrian raised a hand.

“Don’t say anything.””

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Because the truth sitting in front of him was not a stranger breaking into his home.

It was someone who had keys.

Someone who knew the security system.

Someone who knew Lily’s routine.

Someone who knew exactly where the cameras were.

Someone he had welcomed into his family.

The person on the screen was Vanessa.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Lily whispered:

“Why did she take Buttons?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

That question hurt more than the betrayal.

Because Lily wasn’t asking why Vanessa lied.

She wasn’t asking why Vanessa embarrassed her.

She was asking why someone she called family would steal the one thing that made her feel safe.

Adrian knelt beside her.

“I don’t know.””

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“But you said you believed me.””

“I do.””

“Then why did she do it?””

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there were some questions even adults couldn’t answer.

Marcus quietly stepped away and made a phone call.

Adrian watched the security footage again.

The timestamp appeared in the corner.

8:47 p.m.

That was almost exactly when Vanessa sent Lily upstairs.

The camera showed Vanessa walking into the hallway.

She looked around.

She knew where the hidden camera was.

Then she removed Buttons from Lily’s room.

But there was something else.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Pause.””

Marcus turned around.

“What?””

“Go back three seconds.””

The footage rewound.

Vanessa entered Lily’s room.

She opened the door.

Then stopped.

She looked toward the bed.

Toward something.

Adrian watched carefully.

“She wasn’t looking for the bear.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She already knew where Buttons was.””

The footage continued.

Vanessa didn’t search randomly.

She walked directly to the exact spot where Lily had placed the bear.

She knew.

She had been told.

Or she had been watching.

Adrian felt anger rising.

Not the kind that exploded.

The dangerous kind.

The kind that became quiet.

“Find out who installed that camera.””

Marcus nodded.

“I will.””

“And find every recording from today.””

“I’ll need access to the main server.””

“You have it.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Sir, if Vanessa has been using your security access—”

“I know.””

Adrian looked back at the screen.

“I want everything.””

Marcus left.

Lily remained beside him.

She looked tired.

Too tired.

Adrian noticed the way she kept rubbing her eyes.

The way she held Buttons tighter even though the bear was damaged.

“Sweetheart.””

“Yes?””

“You should sleep.””

“No.””

Adrian looked surprised.

“Why not?””

“Because when I sleep, Vanessa might take Buttons again.””

The sentence broke him.

He sat beside her.

“She won’t.””

“How do you know?””

Adrian looked at his daughter.

And for the first time in years, he made a promise without hesitation.

“Because I won’t let anyone hurt you.””

Lily studied him.

“Promise?””

Adrian held out his pinky.

The same way he did when she was younger.

She slowly connected her pinky with his.

“Promise.””

But neither of them noticed the shadow standing at the end of the hallway.

Watching.

Listening.

And holding a phone that had recorded everything.

The next morning, Vanessa acted like nothing happened.

That was what shocked Adrian the most.

She came downstairs wearing a cream-colored blouse, her hair perfectly styled, a cup of coffee in her hand.

She looked like a woman who had slept peacefully.

Not someone caught on camera stealing evidence from a child’s room.

“Good morning,” she said.

Adrian sat at the dining table.

He watched her carefully.

“Morning.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Did Lily sleep well?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

“She slept.””

A small pause.

Then Vanessa sat across from him.

“I’m glad.””

She took a sip of coffee.

“Yesterday was difficult.””

Adrian leaned back.

“Was it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Yes.””

“You mean the part where you embarrassed my daughter?””

Her hand stopped.

Only briefly.

But Adrian saw it.

“Adrian, we talked about this.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“We didn’t.””

Vanessa placed the cup down.

“I understand you’re upset.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain something.””

He slid his phone across the table.

The security footage was paused on Vanessa entering Lily’s room.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What is this?””

Adrian watched her carefully.

“You tell me.””

Vanessa picked up the phone.

She looked at the screen.

Then laughed softly.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

“Yes.””

“Because it looks like you entered Lily’s room after locking her inside.””

Vanessa put the phone down.

“I was checking on her.””

“With a hidden camera?””

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“You removed something from her teddy bear.””

Silence.

This time, Vanessa couldn’t hide it quickly enough.

Her eyes moved.

A tiny reaction.

A tiny mistake.

But Adrian noticed.

“You know what was inside.””

Vanessa leaned back.

“You’re accusing me based on a blurry video?””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice became colder.

“I’m asking why my daughter’s teddy bear had a recording device hidden inside.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she smiled.

Not warmly.

Carefully.

“Maybe you should ask yourself why someone would need to record your daughter.””

The answer disturbed him.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because sometimes children don’t tell the truth.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Lily is five.””

“Exactly.””

“She’s a child.””

“And children can be influenced.””

Adrian stood.

“Are you saying someone influenced her?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

That was the answer.

Adrian walked closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Adrian.””

“Who?””

Her voice lowered.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I made one years ago.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely angry.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I trusted people without asking questions.””

Vanessa stood.

“Are you saying you don’t trust me?””

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m saying I don’t know who you are anymore.””

The words hit her.

Her face changed.

The perfect mask slipped.

“You’re choosing her over me?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because the question itself was wrong.

It wasn’t about choosing.

It was about protecting his daughter.

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“Fine.””

She walked toward the door.

But before leaving, she stopped.

“You should be careful, Adrian.””

He turned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked back.

“It means you don’t know everything about Lily’s mother.””

The room went silent.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“You heard me.””

Then she left.

Adrian stood there.

Frozen.

Because Vanessa had just mentioned the one thing she knew could hurt him.

Lily’s mother.

A woman whose death had always felt like a closed chapter.

But now Adrian wondered.

Was it?

An hour later, Marcus returned with the recovered files.

He looked serious.

“Sir.””

Adrian turned.

“What did you find?””

Marcus placed a folder on the desk.

“The hidden camera wasn’t installed yesterday.””

“How long?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Almost six months.””

Adrian felt a chill.

Six months.

Someone had been watching.

Recording.

Collecting information.

“Who had access?””

Marcus opened the file.

“Only three people.””

“Me.””

“Yes.””

“Vanessa.””

Marcus nodded.

“And one more person.””

Adrian looked down.

“Who?””

Marcus slid the paper forward.

Adrian read the name.

And his heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t a stranger.

It wasn’t an employee.

It wasn’t someone outside the family.

It was someone connected to the past.

Someone who had been there before Vanessa.

Someone who knew Lily’s mother.

Someone who had disappeared the night Lily was born.

Adrian looked up.

“Are you sure?””

Marcus nodded.

“Completely.””

Adrian stared at the name again.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*You finally found the camera. Now find out why Lily’s mother was afraid to tell you the truth.*

Adrian looked toward the staircase.

Lily stood there holding Buttons.

Watching him.

Waiting.

May you like

And for the first time, Adrian realized the birthday party wasn’t the beginning of the mystery.

It was the moment someone finally failed to hide it.
