Chapter 9: The Inheritance Nobody Knew Existed
The words remained on the screen.
*Your sister was never the child I wanted to erase.*
*She was the child who inherited everything.*
Nobody spoke.
The video froze on my grandfather’s face.
A man I had only known through photographs.
A man my father rarely mentioned.
A man who was supposed to be gone before I ever understood the world.
Yet somehow, his voice was reaching me from beyond the grave.
And somehow, he knew exactly where I would be.
Exactly what I would find.
Exactly who would be standing beside me.
I looked at Lily.
She was crying silently.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just small tears running down her cheeks while she held onto my jacket.
She didn’t understand billions.
She didn’t understand companies.
She didn’t understand inheritance.
She only understood one thing.
Adults were fighting over her.
Again.
I knelt down.
“Lily.””
She looked at me.
“Am I in trouble?””
The question broke something inside me.
“No.””
My voice softened.
“You’re not in trouble.””
“Then why does everyone want me?””
I had no answer.
Because the truth was worse than anything I could say.
They wanted her because of what she represented.
Not because of who she was.
I looked up at Ethan.
“What inheritance?””
He was staring at the frozen screen.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
His eyes moved to mine.
“I know pieces.””
“Then give me the pieces.””
Ethan swallowed.
“When I was younger, my father told me that Marcus created something separate from Cross Industries.””
“The foundation.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Something bigger.””
Victor stepped closer.
“The Cross Legacy.””
The name sounded familiar.
I had seen it once.
Years ago.
A file title buried in one of my father’s old business archives.
I thought it was a failed project.
“What is it?””
Victor looked at the screen.
“A legal structure.””
“That doesn’t explain anything.””
“It owns controlling interests in companies, properties, and assets that your grandfather built before Cross Industries existed.””
I stared at him.
“How much?””
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
“How much?””
Claire spoke quietly.
“More than you have.””
The answer hit me.
I was already considered one of the richest people alive.
And there was something bigger.
Something hidden.
Something my entire family had buried.
“Why would Lily inherit it?””
Victor looked at her.
“Because your grandfather created the rules.””
“What rules?””
He opened the file.
“The Cross Legacy could not be controlled by the oldest child.””
I frowned.
“Then who?””
Victor looked at Lily.
“The child born outside the family name.””
Silence.
I understood.
My grandfather had created a system designed around secrets.
Around a child nobody was supposed to know existed.
Around Lily.
“He planned this.””
“Yes.””
“Before she was born?””
“Yes.””
My anger grew.
“So my grandfather knew about her.””
“Yes.””
“And my father knew.””
“Yes.””
“And they both let her live like this?””
Victor looked away.
That was the answer.
I stood up.
I couldn’t understand it.
A child with access to unimaginable wealth had spent her life hungry.
Walking through streets.
Following signs.
Begging for a piece of cake at a charity gala meant to help children.
The irony was almost cruel.
“Where is the inheritance now?””
Ethan pointed at the screen.
“Maybe that’s what he was going to explain.””
The video suddenly moved again.
The old recording continued.
My grandfather leaned closer to the camera.
“If you are seeing this, Damon, then you have discovered the first layer.””
The room went quiet.
“First layer?””
My grandfather continued.
“Your father believed he could save the Cross Legacy by hiding it.””
A cold smile appeared on his face.
“He was wrong.””
The video shifted.
Documents appeared behind him.
“Power does not disappear when you hide it.””
A pause.
“It simply waits for someone else to claim it.””
The screen showed a list.
At the top:
*Primary Heir: Lily Cross*
Below it:
*Secondary Protector: Damon Cross*
My breathing stopped.
Secondary protector.
Not heir.
Protector.
I wasn’t meant to inherit everything.
I was meant to protect the person who did.
My grandfather’s voice continued.
“Damon, you will feel betrayed.””
I almost laughed.
“You have no idea.””
“You will believe your father failed you.””
The room became silent.
“You will believe I created a burden for a child who never asked for it.””
My eyes moved to Lily.
He was right.
“You will be tempted to take control.””
My fists tightened.
Because maybe a part of me had already thought that.
The companies.
The assets.
The power.
It was familiar.
But Lily wasn’t an asset.
She was a child.
My grandfather continued.
“And that is why you were chosen.””
I frowned.
“Chosen?””
The video paused.
Then:
“Because Marcus taught you the wrong lesson about power.””
The screen changed.
A final document appeared.
My grandfather’s signature.
But the date was impossible.
It was after my father’s death.
My heart stopped.
“He was alive.””
Claire whispered.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your grandfather.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“He died years ago.””
Claire shook her head.
“Everyone thought so.””
The room became chaos.
Everyone spoke at once.
Victor looked shocked.
Ethan looked terrified.
I stared at the screen.
Another impossible person.
Another dead person who wasn’t dead.
My family was becoming a graveyard full of ghosts.
The video ended with one final message.
*Meet me where your father began.*
Then coordinates appeared.
I recognized the location.
The old Cross headquarters.
The building everyone said burned down.
The building that apparently still existed.
A loud noise suddenly came from above us.
A gunshot.
Everyone froze.
Then another.
The mansion was under attack.
Victor immediately moved.
“They found us.””
Claire looked toward the passage.
“How?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
Someone had betrayed us.
Again.
Victor grabbed Lily.
“We need to leave.””
This time, I stopped him.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Lily.
Then at the files.
Then at the screen showing my grandfather’s message.
“I’m done running.””
Victor’s expression changed.
“Damon.””
“No.””
My voice was steady.
“For ten years, everyone has moved me around like a piece on a board.””
I looked at the hidden room.
“My father.””
“My grandfather.””
“You.””
“Everyone.””
I stepped forward.
“Not anymore.””
Ethan looked at me.
“What are you going to do?””
I picked up the file.
“We go to the old headquarters.””
Victor shook his head.
“It’s a trap.””
“Probably.””
“Then why?””
Because I finally understood something.
My family had spent generations protecting secrets.
But secrets were exactly what destroyed us.
“Because if my grandfather wants to see me…”
I looked at Lily.
“He’s going to answer every question.””
A shadow moved near the doorway.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood there.
Not one of Adrian’s guards.
Not security.
Someone who had entered without making a sound.
Someone who had been listening.
Victor reached for a weapon.
But I recognized the voice before I saw the face.
“Damon.””
The woman stepped into the light.
My mother.
Alive.
But her face was pale.
Her clothes were torn.
And behind her stood the man holding a gun to her back.
Adrian Voss.
He smiled.
“I’m sorry to interrupt the family reunion.””
His eyes moved to Lily.
“But I believe the rightful heir belongs with me.””
My mother looked at me.
Her eyes filled with fear.
And she whispered the words I knew I would never forget.
“Damon…”
“Don’t let him take her.””
Adrian smiled.
“Too late.””
He raised the gun slightly.
“Because your father made one final mistake.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
Then at Lily.
Then at me.
“He trusted that blood would protect blood.””
The mansion lights went out again.
May you like
And when they came back on—
Lily was gone.
