Chapter 7: The Truth Vanessa Tried to Bury About Lena

For a moment, I didn’t understand what Vanessa meant.

The words were too big.

Too strange.

Too impossible.

“I was trying to replace Lena.””

Everyone heard it.

But nobody knew what to say.

Marcus looked at her like he was waiting for her to explain.

Like there was still a part of him hoping there was another meaning.

“There’s no way,” he whispered.

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t mean—”

“You just said it.””

“I was emotional.””

“No.””

Marcus’ voice was different now.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just empty.

“That’s what you always say.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

“Every time you hurt someone, you say you were emotional.””

Her face tightened.

“That’s not fair.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Fair?””

He pointed toward me.

“Look at her.””

I looked down.

I hated when adults argued about me.

I hated feeling like a problem sitting in the middle of the room.

Marcus noticed.

He walked over and knelt beside me.

“Lena.””

I looked at him.

“You’re okay.””

I nodded.

But I wasn’t.

Because I had heard something I couldn’t forget.

I was trying to replace Lena.

Not my mother.

Me.

Vanessa had never wanted to love me.

She wanted to change me.

Marcus stood.

“Explain.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

She walked toward the kitchen counter.

Her hands touched the edge.

“I was never supposed to be the second mother.””

Nobody spoke.

“I knew that when I met you.””

She looked at Marcus.

“You loved her mother.””

Marcus frowned.

“My wife died.””

“I know.””

“You knew that.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I knew I could never compete with a memory.””

The room became quiet.

“So I stopped trying.””

Marcus stared.

“And started what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I thought if Lena stopped remembering…”

She paused.

“Then maybe she would finally accept me.””

My chest tightened.

“You wanted me to forget Mommy?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For one second, I thought she might apologize.

Instead, she said:

“I wanted you to move on.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“She was seven.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice shook.

“You don’t know what a child needs.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“I tried.””

“You controlled.””

“I cared.””

“You manipulated.””

She looked away.

The words hurt because they were true.

But I also saw something else.

Something I had never noticed before.

Vanessa wasn’t only angry.

She was broken.

That didn’t make what she did okay.

But it made the room more complicated.

Marcus picked up the phone.

“What did Ethan mean by Lena disappearing?””

Vanessa became still.

“I don’t want to talk about that.””

“You don’t get to choose anymore.””

She looked at him.

“You think knowing everything will make you feel better?””

“No.””

His eyes moved to me.

“I think Lena deserves the truth.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then she sat down.

“When Lena’s mother died…”

Her voice became quieter.

“I was already in Marcus’ life.””

I looked at my father.

He nodded slowly.

“I knew Vanessa through work.””

Vanessa continued.

“I saw how much pain he was in.””

Marcus looked away.

“I wanted to help.””

“And I was grateful.””

Vanessa nodded.

“That was the beginning.””

She looked at me.

“Then I started noticing something.””

“What?””

Her fingers twisted together.

“Every time Lena talked about her mother, Marcus smiled.””

My father frowned.

“Because she was my daughter’s mother.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

Her eyes filled.

“I felt invisible.””

The room stayed quiet.

“I thought if I became more like her, things would change.””

Marcus looked confused.

“More like who?””

Vanessa answered softly.

“Lena’s mother.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I studied her.””

Marcus stared.

“What are you talking about?””

“Her clothes.””

Her voice became distant.

“The way she cooked. The songs she sang. The way she spoke.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I thought if I became the woman Lena remembered…”

She swallowed.

“Then Marcus would finally love me the same way.””

My father looked disturbed.

“You tried to become my dead wife?””

“I tried to become someone you couldn’t lose.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus asked:

“And when that didn’t work?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I thought the problem was Lena.””

I felt tears form.

Not because I was surprised.

Because hearing it out loud made it real.

Marcus stepped closer.

“You blamed a child.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I was jealous of a child.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Even her.

She looked down.

“I hated that she had something I couldn’t have.””

“What?””

“A place in your heart that was automatic.””

Marcus looked at me.

Then back at her.

“You had a chance to create your own place.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t know how.””

The room was silent.

Then Marcus’ phone buzzed.

Another message.

Ethan.

Marcus opened it.

His face changed.

“What?””

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa looked nervous.

“What did he say?””

Marcus read the message again.

Then slowly looked at her.

“Ethan said there is one more thing you never told me.””

Vanessa went pale.

“What?””

“He said you knew Lena before you met me.””

The air disappeared.

Marcus looked confused.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My father’s voice sharpened.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus turned toward me.

“Lena…”

Vanessa whispered:

“I met her before.””

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

Marcus stared.

“You’re saying you knew my daughter before we got married?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I saw her.””

“Where?””

Her voice broke.

“At the hospital.””

My heart started racing.

“What hospital?””

“The day her mother died.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked like the ground had disappeared.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I worked there.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

She didn’t answer.

And that silence was terrifying.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“I saw Lena sitting alone.””

I remembered that day only in pieces.

Bright lights.

Doctors.

People whispering.

My father crying.

And me holding my mother’s hand.

“I saw her.””

Vanessa continued.

“And I saw how much Marcus loved her.””

Her voice lowered.

“I knew then.””

“Knew what?””

“That if I wanted a family…”

She looked at me.

“I needed her.””

I shook my head.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked away.

“It means I watched.””

A horrible feeling spread through me.

“You watched me?””

“For weeks.””

Marcus’ face changed.

“Vanessa.””

“I wanted to understand your family.””

“No.””

“I wanted to know what I was walking into.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“You followed my daughter?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I moved closer to my father.

Marcus immediately put an arm around me.

“How long?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Three weeks.””

The room felt smaller.

“Three weeks before we met?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I saw something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Lena was looking for someone to replace her mother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You don’t remember.””

“I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

Her voice became softer.

“You were little.””

Marcus moved between us.

“Stop.””

But Vanessa continued.

“You used to ask every woman if they were your mommy.””

I froze.

Because I remembered something.

Not clearly.

But a feeling.

A question.

A longing.

Vanessa whispered:

“And when you asked me…”

She stopped.

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“You called me Mommy.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Lena?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

Vanessa cried softly.

“Because you were only five.””

Marcus stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because I thought it meant something.””

“What?””

“That we were meant to be a family.””

Marcus looked at her with disbelief.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You took one moment from a grieving child and built your entire life around it.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Marcus’ phone buzzed again.

Another message from Ethan.

This time, it wasn’t text.

It was a photo.

Marcus opened it.

And his face changed completely.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the phone around.

The picture showed a document.

A hospital record.

A name.

A date.

And a signature.

Vanessa’s signature.

Under a line that made my father whisper:

“No…”

I looked at the paper.

I didn’t understand all the words.

But I understood one thing.

The date.

It was three weeks before Vanessa met my father.

And the document proved she had made a decision about me.

A decision no one knew about.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What did you sign?””

Vanessa started crying.

And this time, she didn’t look like someone pretending.

She looked like someone whose secret had finally caught up with her.

Because Ethan had found the one thing she never thought anyone would see.

May you like

The document that proved Vanessa didn’t just want to replace my mother.

She had tried to take my place away from me.
