Chapter 6: The Video That Revealed Vanessa’s Hidden Visit
Marcus didn’t press play immediately.
He stared at the screen.
The file sat there like a warning.
A video.
From yesterday.
The day Vanessa had stood in our living room and told everyone she was trying to help me.
The day she smiled while I stayed silent.
The day I thought my fear was invisible.
But someone had seen it.
Someone had recorded it.
Ethan.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She didn’t answer.
Her silence was louder than words.
“Vanessa.””
She took a step back.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus’ expression hardened.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I had never seen Vanessa without an answer.
It felt strange.
Almost unreal.
Marcus looked at the phone.
Then at me.
“Lena.””
I looked up.
“Do you know what this is?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His voice softened.
“Do you want to see?””
I hesitated.
A part of me wanted to.
Another part of me was afraid.
Because every time Vanessa’s secrets came out, they hurt.
But I nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus pressed play.
The video started.
At first, it showed a street.
A quiet street.
Then the camera moved.
It looked like someone was filming from inside a car.
A house appeared.
Our house.
My heart began beating faster.
The timestamp was from the previous afternoon.
Before my father came home.
Before the doll recording.
Before everything changed.
Then Vanessa appeared on the screen.
She was standing at our front door.
But I didn’t remember her coming home.
Because I had been inside.
Alone.
The video continued.
Vanessa knocked.
Then she looked around.
Like she was checking if anyone was watching.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
And there I was.
My younger self from yesterday.
Standing there with my mother’s photograph.
My hands tightened.
I didn’t want to watch.
But I couldn’t look away.
The video had no sound at first.
Then Ethan’s voice appeared.
He must have recorded it from somewhere nearby.
“Don’t skip this part.””
Marcus looked surprised.
Ethan was narrating.
The video continued.
Vanessa looked at me.
The same cold expression.
The same one I knew.
Then the audio became clearer.
Vanessa said:
“Why are you still holding that?””
My younger voice answered:
“Because she’s my mommy.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Lena.””
The way she said my name made me shiver.
Even knowing it was a recording.
Even knowing my father was beside me.
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
The video showed me stepping backward.
Then Vanessa reached out.
Marcus grabbed the edge of the table.
His knuckles turned white.
He watched himself fail to be there.
Fail to protect me.
The video continued.
“Say it.””
My small voice:
“What?””
Vanessa:
“Say I’m your mommy.””
Nobody in the room breathed.
I knew what came next.
But hearing it again felt worse.
Because this time, I wasn’t remembering.
I was watching.
“No.””
“You’re not her.””
Then the video showed Vanessa picking up the doll.
The same doll.
The same threat.
“Then maybe Daddy stops loving you.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The video stopped.
Not because it ended.
Because someone paused it.
Vanessa.
She had stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Marcus slowly turned.
“No.””
Her face changed.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You don’t get to stop this.””
“I said enough.””
“You said that because you know what comes next.””
Vanessa looked away.
Ethan’s voice came from the phone.
“Keep watching.””
Marcus pressed play.
The video continued.
This time, it showed something I didn’t remember.
After Vanessa threatened me.
After I started crying.
She didn’t leave.
She sat beside me.
And her voice changed.
The camera angle was far away, but the sound was clear.
“Lena.””
I looked up.
“I’m sorry.””
My younger self stared at her.
Vanessa continued.
“I get frustrated because I love you.””
I watched myself.
Confused.
Because that was the part that always hurt.
She could be cruel.
Then kind.
Mean.
Then gentle.
It made my head feel like it was spinning.
Vanessa reached toward me.
“I just want you to understand something.””
My younger voice whispered:
“What?””
“You don’t want to lose another mother, do you?””
I froze.
Marcus froze.
Because that sentence was not a threat.
Not directly.
It was worse.
It was fear disguised as love.
Vanessa continued.
“Your daddy has choices.””
My small voice:
“What choices?””
“He could find someone easier.””
My father looked sick.
“She was preparing you to fear abandonment,” he whispered.
The video continued.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“But I can make sure that doesn’t happen.””
“How?””
“By being the only person you need.””
The room went silent.
Then the video showed something unexpected.
A shadow moved.
Someone outside the window.
Ethan’s voice returned.
“That was when I understood.””
The camera zoomed slightly.
A boy’s reflection appeared in the glass.
Ethan.
He had been there.
Watching.
Listening.
My eyes widened.
“He saw everything,” Marcus whispered.
The video continued.
Ethan spoke.
“Lena, I need you to hear this part.””
The camera turned toward Vanessa again.
She was leaving.
But before she walked away, she looked back at me.
And she said:
“Someday, you’ll thank me for making you choose.””
The video stopped.
No one spoke.
Vanessa looked like she had aged ten years.
Marcus stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Why what?””
“Why would you do that?””
Her eyes filled.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You were trying to protect your control.””
Vanessa looked angry now.
Finally.
The sadness disappeared.
“You think this is simple?””
“No.””
“You think I woke up one day and decided to be like this?””
“No.””
“Then stop looking at me like I’m evil.””
Marcus stared.
“I’m looking at you like someone who hurt children.””
Vanessa flinched.
I saw it.
A small reaction.
But it was there.
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked at it.
A message.
She read it.
Her face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What now?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who is it?””
She turned the phone around.
A message from Ethan.
Only one sentence.
*“I know about the second recording.””*
Marcus frowned.
“Second?””
Vanessa’s breathing became uneven.
“What second recording?””
She didn’t respond.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
The phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Ethan.
Marcus read it aloud.
“Ask her about the night Lena disappeared from the house.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at my father.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked confused.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He wasn’t supposed to know.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Marcus’ voice became low.
“What night?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I…”
She stopped.
For the first time, she looked trapped.
Not by anger.
Not by accusation.
By the truth.
Marcus took the phone from her hand.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
The silence lasted too long.
Then Marcus said:
“When did Lena disappear?””
I looked between them.
“I didn’t disappear.””
But nobody heard me.
Because Vanessa finally spoke.
And the words she said changed everything.
“Before she came here…”
She looked at me.
“…she was supposed to be gone.””
Marcus went still.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“It means Ethan found out before I could fix it.””
My father’s voice became a whisper.
“Fix what?””
Vanessa lifted her eyes.
And for the first time, I saw the truth she had been hiding.
Not just about Ethan.
Not just about the recordings.
About me.
“I wasn’t trying to replace Lena’s mother.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“I was trying to replace Lena.””
