Chapter 8: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About
The message stayed on Elise’s screen for nearly a minute.
*Now you understand why Maya can never tell the truth.*
She read it once.
Then twice.
The words were not a confession.
They were worse.
They were confidence.
Raymond Vale was not afraid of being exposed.
He believed he had already won.
Elise looked across the diner table at Maya.
The little girl was coloring quietly, unaware that adults had just placed the weight of an entire empire on her tiny shoulders.
An inheritance.
A fortune.
A legal battle.
A reason someone had spent years controlling her life.
Elise felt something inside her shift.
Maya was not evidence.
She was not a key.
She was not a piece in someone else’s game.
She was a child.
And everyone had forgotten that.
“*We need to get her somewhere safe.*”
The words came from Daniel.
Tessa nodded immediately.
“*Where?*”
Nobody answered.
Because that was the problem.
Everywhere connected to their lives was connected to Raymond.
The school.
The apartment.
Family.
Money.
Even the people who were supposed to help.
Raymond had built a world where he was always one step ahead.
Elise looked at Daniel.
“*How did Raymond find out about Maya’s inheritance?*”
Daniel looked down.
“*Because he was the one who told me.*”
Everyone became still.
“*What?*” Tessa whispered.
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“*After Maya was born, my mother changed her will. She had been planning to leave everything to Raymond. But after she discovered what he was doing, she changed it.*”
“*To Maya?*”
Daniel nodded.
“*Every asset. Every account. Every property. She created a trust in Maya’s name.*”
Elise looked at the table.
“*And Raymond became her guardian?*”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“*Exactly.*”
The realization hit everyone at once.
Raymond had not fought for control because he loved Maya.
He fought because control meant access.
“*But why didn’t Tessa know?*” Elise asked.
Tessa looked ashamed.
“*Because Raymond handled everything after my mother died. He told me there were legal matters I didn’t understand. He said he was protecting Maya’s future.*”
Daniel looked at her.
“*He lied.*”
Tessa nodded slowly.
“*I know that now.*”
Maya suddenly looked up.
“*Mommy?*”
Tessa immediately softened.
“*Yes, sweetheart?*”
“*Am I in trouble?*”
The question broke the room.
Elise reached across and held Maya’s hand.
“*No. Never.*”
Maya looked at her.
“*Grandpa says people only want me because of the money.*”
Nobody spoke.
The cruelty of that sentence was almost impossible to absorb.
A six-year-old had been taught to believe she was valuable only because of what she owned.
Not because of who she was.
“*Maya, listen to me,*” Elise said gently.
“*People care about you because you are you. Not because of money. Not because of anything else.*”
The little girl nodded.
But she did not look convinced.
That hurt Elise more than anything.
The next morning, Elise met with a lawyer.
Not Raymond’s lawyer.
Someone Daniel trusted.
Her name was Hannah Pierce.
She was younger than Elise expected, with sharp eyes and a calm voice.
They met in a quiet office downtown.
Hannah looked through the documents Daniel provided.
Then she looked up.
“*If these records are authentic, Raymond Vale committed serious fraud.*”
Elise leaned forward.
“*Can you prove it?*”
Hannah nodded.
“*Possibly. But we need the original documents. Copies can be challenged.*”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“*The originals are in the blue box.*”
Hannah looked at him.
“*And Raymond has it.*”
Nobody spoke.
“*Then we need another way,*” Hannah said.
Elise looked at the lawyer.
“*What if Raymond destroys it?*”
Hannah’s expression became serious.
“*Then he’s already planning for that possibility. People like Raymond don’t keep one copy of anything.*”
Elise remembered the unknown messages.
The hidden files.
The person who had warned her.
“*Someone else may have information.*”
Hannah raised an eyebrow.
“*Who?*”
Elise hesitated.
She had not told anyone about the former employee.
The person who failed Maya’s grandmother.
The person who knew Raymond.
“*I don’t know yet.*”
Hannah studied her.
“*Elise, if you’re going against Raymond Vale, you need to understand something.*”
“*What?*”
“*He doesn’t fight fair. He fights first.*”
Elise already knew.
She had seen it.
The complaint.
The accusations.
The way he turned himself into the victim.
“*He already reported me.*”
Hannah’s face changed.
“*To whom?*”
“*The school. Police.*”
The lawyer sighed.
“*Then he’s trying to establish a pattern.*”
“*A pattern?*”
“*Yes. He wants people to believe you are obsessed with accusing him. Then anything you reveal later becomes easier to dismiss.*”
Elise felt cold.
Because that was exactly what he was doing.
That afternoon, Elise returned to Lakeview Primary.
She needed to collect her things.
The school felt different.
Teachers avoided eye contact.
Parents whispered.
Her reputation had already started changing.
That was Raymond’s first victory.
People believed rumors before facts.
Mrs. Caldwell found her in the classroom.
“*You’re leaving?*”
Elise shook her head.
“*Only temporarily.*”
The secretary looked relieved.
Then worried.
“*He came here this morning.*”
Elise stopped.
“*Raymond?*”
Mrs. Caldwell nodded.
“*He wanted to speak with Dr. Harper.*”
“*About me?*”
“*Yes.*”
Elise clenched her jaw.
“*What did he say?*”
Mrs. Caldwell looked toward the hallway.
“*He said you were unstable. That you had become emotionally attached to Maya.*”
Elise closed her eyes.
The exact accusation she expected.
“*Anything else?*”
Mrs. Caldwell hesitated.
“*He asked about the old storage room.*”
Elise looked up.
“*What?*”
“*He asked if anyone had accessed the old files.*”
A chill moved through her.
“*What did Dr. Harper say?*”
Mrs. Caldwell looked terrified.
“*He lied.*”
That evening, Daniel received a call.
One call.
One sentence.
And his entire expression changed.
Elise was sitting with Tessa and Maya at a temporary safe location Hannah arranged when Daniel walked inside.
“*We have a problem.*”
Everyone looked up.
Tessa stood.
“*What happened?*”
Daniel looked at Maya.
Then lowered his voice.
“*Raymond filed for emergency guardianship.*”
The room went silent.
“*What?*” Tessa whispered.
“*He claims Maya is being manipulated and is currently in an unsafe environment.*”
Elise felt anger rise.
“*He is accusing us of what he is doing.*”
Daniel nodded.
“*The hearing is tomorrow morning.*”
Tessa’s face went pale.
“*Can he win?*”
Nobody answered immediately.
That scared Elise.
Because silence was sometimes an answer.
Hannah’s warning returned.
He fights first.
“*What happens if he wins?*” Maya asked.
Everyone froze.
Nobody realized she was listening.
Tessa rushed to her.
“*Sweetheart—*”
“*Do I have to go back?*”
Her voice cracked.
Elise knelt beside her.
“*No one is sending you anywhere.*”
But Maya looked afraid.
“*That’s what everyone said before.*”
The sentence destroyed them.
Because Maya had learned not to trust promises.
Late that night, Elise sat alone with the documents.
She searched through every file.
Every name.
Every date.
Then she noticed something.
A document from Raymond’s company.
A payment.
A transfer.
A familiar name.
She froze.
The person who helped Raymond hide Daniel’s disappearance.
The person who had signed the paperwork.
The person who had access to everything.
She grabbed her phone.
She called Hannah.
“*I found something.*”
“*What?*”
“*The person who helped Raymond fake Daniel’s death.*”
A pause.
“*Who?*”
Elise stared at the name.
Her voice lowered.
“*It was someone inside the legal system.*”
“*Who?*”
Elise swallowed.
“*The judge assigned to tomorrow’s guardianship hearing.*”
The line went silent.
Then Hannah whispered:
“*Elise… are you sure?*”
Before she could answer, a notification appeared on her phone.
A new message.
From Raymond.
A photo.
Maya sleeping.
Taken through a window.
Elise’s blood turned cold.
May you like
Underneath the image were six words.
*You should have protected her sooner.*
