Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.

Lucas stared at the photograph in Lily's hand.

He had seen hundreds of pictures of Isabella. He had kept them in his study, his bedroom, and even the glove compartment of his car.

But he had never seen this one.

In it, Isabella was standing inside a hospital room, wearing a pale blue cardigan. Her hair was tied back, and her face looked exhausted.

Victor stood beside her.

His hand rested on the hospital bed.

And Isabella was holding a newborn baby.

Daniel.

The date printed on the photograph was two days after the funeral Lucas had attended.

His funeral.

Lucas looked at Victor.

“Explain.””

Victor's face had lost its color.

“It's not what you think.””

Lucas laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“Three years of lies, and that's the best you can do?””

Victor tightened his grip on Lily's shoulder.

“Put the photograph down, sweetheart.””

Lily shook her head.

“My mommy said I should keep it.””

Lucas looked at her.

“Your mommy?””

Lily nodded.

“She gave it to me before she went away.””

Victor's eyes narrowed.

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

Lucas's mind raced.

Isabella had been alive after the funeral.

Daniel had been alive.

And Victor had been present when the photograph was taken.

“Where was this hospital?”” Lucas demanded.

Victor didn't answer.

“Victor!””

“Mercy General.””

Lucas turned toward Elias.

“Find every record from Mercy General three years ago.””

Elias immediately pulled out his phone.

Victor laughed bitterly.

“You think records are going to tell you the truth?””

“No,” Lucas replied.

“But they might tell me how many people you paid to lie.””

Victor's face twisted.

“You still don't understand why I did it.””

“Then tell me.””

Victor looked at the photograph.

For a moment, something resembling regret crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

“Isabella was pregnant.””

Lucas stopped breathing.

“What?””

“She was pregnant before Daniel died.””

Lucas stared at him.

“Daniel was five.””

“I'm not talking about Daniel.””

The words struck harder than a bullet.

Lucas looked at Lily.

Then at Victor.

“What are you saying?””

Victor slowly smiled.

“Your wife had another child.””

Lucas felt the warehouse tilt.

“Where is that child?””

Victor didn't answer.

Lily tugged at his sleeve.

“Mr. Lucas?””

He looked at her.

“My mommy said you would understand when you saw the picture.””

Lucas crouched slightly.

“Did your mother tell you anything else?””

Lily nodded.

“She said that if Uncle Victor ever came near me, I should tell you about the baby.””

Victor's hand tightened.

“Enough.””

Lucas immediately stood.

“Take your hand off her.””

Victor pulled Lily closer.

“Don't move.””

Lucas's eyes never left him.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

Victor laughed.

“I'm the one holding the child.””

“And I'm the one who knows exactly how afraid you are.””

Victor's smile faded.

Lucas continued.

“You've spent three years keeping a dead man's family alive in secret. You didn't kill Isabella. You didn't kill Daniel. You couldn't bring yourself to do it.””

Victor's expression changed.

Lucas saw it.

The smallest flicker.

“You needed them,” Lucas whispered.

“You needed them alive because they knew something.””

Victor suddenly shoved Lily toward one of his men.

“Get her out!””

But Elias moved faster.

He lunged across the warehouse, striking the guard's arm and pulling Lily away.

A gunshot exploded.

The sound bounced off the metal walls.

Lily screamed.

Lucas grabbed her and dropped behind a concrete support pillar.

“Stay down!””

Elias returned fire.

The guards scattered.

Victor ran toward the rear exit.

Lucas looked at Lily.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head, sobbing.

“I want my mommy!””

“I know.””

Lucas handed her to Elias.

“Get her out.””

“Boss—”

“NOW!””

Elias carried Lily toward the loading bay while Lucas pursued Victor.

The rear door slammed open.

Cold rain blew into the warehouse.

Victor was already running toward a black SUV.

Lucas caught sight of him just before the vehicle pulled away.

He fired once at the rear tire.

The SUV swerved, crashed into a stack of wooden pallets, and stopped.

Victor stumbled out.

Lucas reached him before he could get back up.

He grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the vehicle.

“You should have stayed my brother.””

Victor coughed.

“You never treated me like one.””

Lucas tightened his grip.

“Where is Isabella?””

Victor laughed through the pain.

“You're still asking the wrong question.””

“Where is she?””

Victor looked directly into his eyes.

“Ask Grace.””

Lucas froze.

“What?””

“Your precious housekeeper knows where your wife is.””

Lucas released him.

For one terrible second, the entire world seemed to go silent.

Then Elias called from the warehouse entrance.

“Boss! We have a problem!””

Lucas turned.

“What?””

“Grace is gone.””

Grace Carter had never intended to leave the warehouse.

She had only wanted to keep Lily safe.

But when the shooting began, she saw something that made her blood run cold.

A man in a dark jacket had entered through the side entrance.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He wasn't helping Victor.

He was carrying a small medical bag.

Grace recognized him immediately.

Dr. Samuel Price.

The doctor who had disappeared.

The doctor whose medication had nearly killed Lucas.

And the man who had once stood beside Isabella in the hospital.

Grace had seen him before.

Three years earlier.

On the night Isabella gave birth.

He had been the one who carried the baby away.

Grace had spent years trying to forget his face.

Now he was standing only a few feet away.

He looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter.””

Grace stepped backward.

“You.””

He nodded.

“We need to talk.””

“Where is Isabella?””

The doctor looked toward the loading bay.

“Not here.””

“Where is she?””

He reached into his medical bag and removed a photograph.

Grace stared at it.

A little girl sat on a hospital bed.

She had dark brown hair and gray-blue eyes.

She looked about three years old.

On her wrist was a white hospital bracelet.

Grace covered her mouth.

“Who is she?””

The doctor looked at her.

“Isabella's second child.””

Grace's knees weakened.

“She's alive?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Safe. For now.””

Grace stepped closer.

“Why are you telling me this?””

The doctor lowered his voice.

“Because Victor is no longer the only person who wants that child dead.””

Grace stared at him.

“What do you mean?””

He looked toward the entrance.

“Someone inside the Moretti family ordered the baby's disappearance.””

“Who?””

Before he could answer, a vehicle screeched outside.

The doctor grabbed Grace's arm.

“We have to leave.””

She pulled away.

“I'm not going anywhere until you tell me where Isabella is.””

He leaned closer.

“Isabella is in the city.””

Grace's heart hammered.

“Where?””

The doctor whispered an address.

Then he added something that made her blood run cold.

“She believes Lucas is responsible for what happened to her daughter.””

At the warehouse, Lucas had Victor restrained in a chair.

Two guards stood behind him.

Elias had returned with Lily, who was now sitting inside an SUV with a blanket around her shoulders.

Lucas walked toward Victor.

“Start talking.””

Victor spat blood onto the concrete floor.

“You think you can scare me?””

Lucas placed the hospital photograph on the table.

“Who is the baby?””

Victor stared at it.

“Your daughter.””

Lucas felt his throat close.

“My daughter?””

“Isabella gave birth two days after you were supposedly killed.””

Lucas stared at him.

“I'm not dead.””

Victor laughed.

“You were supposed to be.””

Lucas's eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

Victor leaned back.

“The warehouse explosion was planned to kill you. Isabella found out before it happened. She tried to warn you, but I intercepted the message.””

Lucas's hands curled into fists.

“I remember the call.””

“You remember the lie.””

Victor continued.

“She went to the hospital when she realized she couldn't stop you. She was already in labor. The baby was born early.””

Lucas looked down at the photograph.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Because the family couldn't afford another heir.””

Lucas slowly raised his head.

“What?””

Victor's smile disappeared.

“Your father had made arrangements before he died. The Moretti empire was supposed to pass to a different branch of the family if you had no legitimate successor.””

Lucas stared at him.

“My father was dead.””

“His orders weren't.””

Victor leaned forward.

“Your daughter threatened everything. If she lived, Isabella could claim your estate and challenge the succession. If Daniel survived, he would inherit the family name. I was ordered to make sure neither child could ever become a problem.””

Lucas felt sick.

“Who gave the order?””

Victor looked toward the ceiling.

Then he smiled.

“Your father.””

Lucas shook his head.

“Impossible.””

“Your father knew Isabella was pregnant. He knew she wanted to take the children away from this life. He considered her a threat.””

Lucas grabbed the table.

“My father died before Daniel's funeral.””

“His instructions were written long before that.””

Lucas looked at Victor.

“Where is my daughter?””

Victor shrugged.

“I don't know.””

“Who took her?””

“I don't know.””

Lucas leaned forward.

“Then who does?””

Victor smiled.

“Your mother.””

Lucas went completely still.

“My mother died when I was twelve.””

Victor shook his head.

“Your biological mother died when you were twelve.””

He paused.

“But the woman who raised you after that?””

Lucas stared.

Victor whispered:

“She's been alive this whole time.””

At 4:20 a.m., Lucas returned to the mansion.

Daniel was asleep on the sofa in the private sitting room.

Lily was curled up in an armchair beside him.

They had fallen asleep holding hands.

Lucas stood in the doorway for a long time.

Two children.

Both had been dragged into a war they never understood.

He approached Daniel and gently tucked the blanket around him.

Then he noticed something beneath the boy's hand.

A folded drawing.

Lucas picked it up.

It showed a house.

Three figures stood outside.

A woman.

A little boy.

And a little girl.

Above them, in uneven letters, Daniel had written:

*MOMMY, ME, AND MY SISTER.*

Lucas stared at the drawing.

Then he heard footsteps.

Elias entered.

“Boss.””

“What?””

“We found something in the hospital records.””

Lucas turned.

Elias placed a folder on the table.

“Your daughter wasn't registered under Isabella's name.””

“Then whose?””

Elias swallowed.

“Grace Carter.””

Lucas stared at him.

“What?””

“The baby was transferred from the hospital under Grace's identity. According to the records, she was adopted and later declared deceased.””

Lucas slowly opened the folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The child's name was written clearly.

*CHARLOTTE CARTER.*

Lucas looked toward the sleeping Lily.

Then at Grace's empty chair.

And suddenly he understood why Victor had called the little girl a problem.

May you like

Because Lily Carter wasn't simply the daughter of a housekeeper.

She was his daughter.
