Chapter 10: The Last Moretti Secret
The first explosion shattered the windows of the old music school.
Lucas jumped from the SUV before it had completely stopped.
“BELLA!””
Smoke poured through the second-floor windows. Flames crawled along the curtains, turning the familiar building into a furnace.
Elias arrived behind him with two guards.
“Boss, the fire department is on its way!””
Lucas grabbed a fire extinguisher from the vehicle.
“Get everyone out!””
“Lucas, wait!””
But he was already running inside.
The hallway was filled with smoke. Pieces of plaster fell from the ceiling. Somewhere upstairs, an alarm screamed.
“ISABELLA!””
A faint voice answered.
“Lucas!””
He followed it.
At the top of the staircase, he found Emily lying beside the piano room door. Blood ran down her forehead.
He dropped beside her.
“Emily!””
She opened her eyes.
“Mr. Moretti?””
“Where is Isabella?””
“Inside.””
Lucas looked toward the burning room.
“Where's Victor?””
Emily grabbed his sleeve.
“He took the envelope.””
Lucas looked at her.
“What envelope?””
“The hospital records. He knows about the fifth baby.””
Lucas felt the floor shake beneath him.
“Stay here. Elias will get you out.””
He lifted Emily carefully and carried her toward the staircase.
Elias met him halfway.
“Take her!””
Elias grabbed the young woman.
Lucas turned back.
“Lucas!”” Emily shouted.
He stopped.
“Your brother isn't Victor.””
Lucas stared.
“What?””
Emily coughed.
“Your brother is the man who signed the hospital records.””
Before Lucas could ask another question, the ceiling above them cracked.
A burning beam crashed between them.
Lucas stumbled backward.
And from somewhere inside the smoke, a familiar voice called his name.
“Lucas!””
Isabella.
He ran.
The piano room was almost completely engulfed in flames.
The curtains had burned away. The wooden piano was beginning to crack from the heat.
Isabella stood near the window, holding a small metal box.
Her left arm was bleeding.
Lucas reached her.
“Bella!””
She turned.
For one second, neither moved.
Then she rushed into his arms.
He held her tightly.
“I thought I lost you again.””
Isabella pressed her face against his chest.
“You came.””
“I'll always come.””
She pulled away.
“Victor has the records.””
“I know.””
“He knows about the fifth baby.””
Lucas stared.
“Emily said Victor isn't my brother.””
Isabella nodded.
“She was right.””
Lucas looked at her.
“Then who is?””
Isabella opened the metal box.
Inside were several hospital documents, an old photograph, and a small silver bracelet.
She handed him the photograph.
It showed five newborn babies.
Lucas stared.
“Five.””
Isabella nodded.
“Your father had five children that night.””
“Who was the fifth?””
She pointed to a name written on the back.
*THOMAS ANTHONY MORETTI.*
Lucas frowned.
“I've never heard that name.””
“Because your father erased it.””
Isabella explained that the fifth baby had been born to another woman.
A woman named Catherine Bell.
She had been Anthony Moretti's mistress before his first marriage.
The child was born prematurely on the same night as Isabella's triplets.
Anthony had arranged for all five babies to be delivered at the same private hospital.
But only four were officially recorded as Moretti children.
The fifth had been registered under another surname.
“Why?”” Lucas asked.
“Because Anthony wanted to hide the fact that he had another son.””
Lucas looked at the photograph.
“Where is he now?””
Isabella's expression changed.
“You know him.””
Lucas stared.
“Who?””
She looked directly into his eyes.
“Elias.””
For several seconds, Lucas couldn't speak.
“Elias?””
Isabella nodded.
“He was raised under another name. Anthony arranged for him to enter the family security department when he was young.””
Lucas shook his head.
“No.””
“I'm sorry.””
“Elias is my brother?””
“Yes.””
Lucas looked at the photograph again.
The five babies had been separated before they were old enough to recognize one another.
Daniel.
Charlotte.
Sophie.
Emily.
And Elias.
Victor had not been the fifth child.
He had been another man entirely.
A man who had learned the family's secrets and used them to build his own power.
Lucas looked toward the burning doorway.
“Where is Victor?””
Isabella pointed toward the back exit.
“He left with the documents.””
Lucas took her hand.
“Then we're leaving.””
But before they reached the door, a gunshot rang out.
The bullet struck the wall beside them.
Victor stood in the hallway.
His suit was torn.
His face was streaked with soot.
And in his hand was a pistol.
“Don't move.””
Lucas stepped in front of Isabella.
“It's over, Victor.””
Victor laughed.
“Is it?””
He raised the gun.
“You still don't understand.””
Lucas stared at him.
“Then explain it.””
Victor's eyes burned.
“Your father promised me everything. He promised that I would become the heir. He promised that when you were gone, the empire would belong to me.””
“You were never his son.””
Victor's expression twisted.
“No. But I was the son he chose.””
Lucas looked at him.
“You murdered my wife in my memories. You stole my children. You nearly killed me.””
Victor shook his head.
“I gave you a chance to walk away.””
“You gave me a funeral.””
Victor raised the gun higher.
“You were supposed to stay dead.””
Lucas moved.
The gun fired.
The bullet struck his shoulder.
Isabella screamed.
Lucas crashed against the wall, but he stayed on his feet.
Victor stepped forward.
“Now you understand.””
But before he could fire again, another shot rang through the corridor.
Victor's gun dropped.
He stared at his bleeding hand.
Elias stood at the other end of the hallway.
His weapon was raised.
“Drop it.””
Victor looked at him.
“You?””
Elias stepped forward.
“Put the gun down.””
Victor laughed.
“You don't even know who you are.””
Elias's face remained calm.
“I know exactly who I am.””
Victor looked at Lucas.
“Tell him.””
Lucas slowly straightened.
“He's your brother.””
Elias froze.
Victor smiled.
“Congratulations. The family reunion is complete.””
Then he lunged toward Isabella.
Lucas tackled him.
The two men crashed through the doorway and onto the burning staircase.
Victor struck Lucas across the face.
Lucas hit him back.
They fought like men who had nothing left to lose.
Victor reached for the fallen gun.
Lucas caught his wrist.
“Not this time.””
He twisted Victor's arm and forced the weapon away.
Elias reached them.
“Boss!””
Lucas shoved Victor toward him.
“Take him.””
Elias handcuffed Victor.
For the first time in three years, the man who had controlled the Moretti family was powerless.
Victor looked up at Lucas.
“You think you've won?””
Lucas looked down at him.
“No.””
He glanced toward Isabella.
Then toward the staircase.
“I think I've finally stopped losing.””
The fire department arrived minutes later.
Lucas was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound in his shoulder.
Isabella was treated for smoke inhalation and a deep cut on her arm.
Emily suffered a concussion but was expected to recover.
Victor was arrested and transferred to federal custody.
The hospital records, the forged death certificates, the financial transfers, and the recordings of Anthony Moretti's orders became the foundation of an investigation that would expose decades of corruption.
But Lucas had one more question.
He sat beside Isabella's hospital bed while the morning sun filtered through the curtains.
“Why did you tell me there were only three children?””
Isabella looked at him.
“Because I thought the fourth had died.””
“And the fifth?””
She sighed.
“I didn't know about Elias until recently.””
Lucas looked toward the window.
“I spent years believing I was protecting this family.””
Isabella reached for his hand.
“You were protecting a name.””
He looked at her.
“And now?””
She smiled sadly.
“Now you have a chance to protect the people behind it.””
Lucas squeezed her fingers.
“I don't want the empire anymore.””
“Then let it go.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
Isabella studied his face.
“You said that once before.””
“I know.””
“What makes this time different?””
Lucas looked toward the hospital door.
Daniel stood there, holding Lily's hand.
Sophie and Emily were behind them.
And Elias was waiting in the hallway.
“Because this time, I have something worth losing everything for.””
Three weeks later, the Moretti mansion no longer looked like a fortress.
The armed guards were gone from the entrance.
The heavy security gates remained, but they were no longer locked against the outside world.
Lucas had begun dismantling the family's criminal operations.
Several legitimate businesses were transferred into independent management. The remaining illegal assets were surrendered as part of a federal cooperation agreement.
It wasn't an easy decision.
Some of the old captains threatened him.
Others tried to bargain.
A few disappeared before they could be arrested.
Lucas didn't chase them.
For the first time, he understood that walking away from something could be stronger than fighting to control it.
On a quiet Sunday morning, he stood in the kitchen watching Lily arrange strawberries on a plate.
Daniel was helping Sophie pour orange juice.
Emily sat at the table with a book.
Elias entered carrying a newspaper.
“Morning.””
Lucas looked up.
“Morning.””
Elias placed the newspaper on the counter.
The front page showed a photograph of the federal courthouse.
Victor Romano was being escorted inside by two officers.
The headline read:
*FORMER MAFIA LIEUTENANT CHARGED IN DECADES-LONG CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY.*
Lucas glanced at it.
Then he turned away.
Elias noticed.
“Don't you want to read it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Lucas smiled faintly.
“Because I know how it ends.””
Elias raised an eyebrow.
“And how's that?””
Lucas looked at the children.
“With breakfast.””
At eleven o'clock, Isabella entered the kitchen.
She was wearing a simple cream dress.
Her hair fell naturally around her shoulders.
Lily immediately ran toward her.
“Mommy!””
Isabella knelt and caught her.
“Hello, my little girl.””
Lily hugged her tightly.
Then she pulled away.
“Are you staying?””
Isabella looked at Lucas.
He stood beside the table, waiting.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
“Forever?””
Isabella kissed her forehead.
“That's the plan.””
Lily smiled.
Then she reached into her pocket and removed a small pink inhaler.
“Look, Mommy. Mr. Lucas bought me a new one.””
Isabella laughed.
“That's wonderful.””
Lucas walked over.
“Actually, I bought three.””
Daniel looked up.
“Why?””
Lucas smiled.
“Because I don't want anyone in this family running out of medicine again.””
Sophie giggled.
Emily shook her head.
“You really are becoming a father.””
Lucas looked at her.
“I've been a father for eight years.””
Emily smiled.
“Then perhaps you're finally learning how to be one.””
He laughed.
For a moment, the kitchen filled with a sound that had been missing for years.
A family laughing together.
That afternoon, Lucas visited the cemetery.
He stood before his father's grave.
The stone was simple.
ANTHONY MORETTI.
Beloved Father.
Lucas placed a small envelope on the ground.
Inside were copies of the hospital records.
The truth.
All five children.
All five names.
He stared at the grave.
“You spent your life believing the family belonged to you.””
The wind moved through the trees.
“But it never did.””
Lucas turned away.
He didn't feel forgiveness.
He didn't feel hatred.
He felt something quieter.
Freedom.
As he reached the car, his phone rang.
It was Elias.
“Boss?””
Lucas smiled.
“You know you don't have to call me that anymore.””
A brief pause.
“Habit.””
“What is it?””
“We found another account connected to Anthony.””
Lucas stopped.
“What kind of account?””
“A private trust.””
“Where?””
“Switzerland.””
Lucas sighed.
“More money?””
“Much more.””
“Freeze it.””
“There's something else.””
Lucas waited.
“The beneficiary is listed as a child.””
“Which child?””
Elias hesitated.
Then he read the name.
“Lily Carter.””
Lucas stared at the cemetery gate.
“What?””
“The trust was established before she was born. Your father apparently knew about Isabella's pregnancy.””
Lucas felt cold.
“How much?””
Elias gave him the figure.
Lucas said nothing.
“Boss?””
Lucas finally answered.
“Keep the money untouched. Have the lawyers verify everything.””
“Understood.””
“And Elias?””
“Yes?””
“Don't tell the children until we know exactly what it means.””
He ended the call.
Then he looked back at his father's grave.
Even in death, Anthony Moretti had left one final secret.
But Lucas had learned something.
He didn't have to follow his father's instructions.
He could choose what happened next.
Six months later, the mansion had changed completely.
The east wing had been converted into a music school.
The old security office was now a library.
The enormous dining room, once reserved for meetings with powerful men, had become a place where children could make as much noise as they wanted.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Isabella sat at the piano.
Daniel stood beside her.
Sophie and Emily were arguing over a board game.
Elias was outside repairing a bicycle.
And Lily was running through the hallway in her pink pajamas.
Lucas watched from the doorway.
“Lily!””
She stopped.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Where are you going?””
“To get my inhaler!””
He smiled.
“Good idea.””
She ran toward the bedroom.
Then she returned, holding it up proudly.
“Got it!””
Lucas crouched.
“Remember what we practiced?””
She nodded.
“Use it only when I need it, and tell Mommy or Daddy if my breathing feels strange.””
“Exactly.””
She smiled.
Then she looked at him carefully.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Are you still sick?””
Lucas glanced toward Isabella.
Then he looked back at his daughter.
“Sometimes.””
Lily tilted her head.
“But you're not going to die?””
Lucas took her small hand.
“Not today.””
She considered that answer.
Then she leaned forward and hugged him.
“Good. Because I need you.””
Lucas closed his eyes.
Three years earlier, he had been lying on a cold marble floor.
The most feared man on the East Coast.
Surrounded by people who were too afraid to touch him.
He had believed that money, power, and loyalty could protect him from anything.
Then a six-year-old girl in pink pajamas had knelt beside him.
She hadn't known his name.
She hadn't known his reputation.
She hadn't known he was a millionaire, a criminal, or a man with enemies in every corner of the city.
She had simply seen someone who couldn't breathe.
And she had helped.
Lucas looked at the little inhaler in her hand.
“Lily?””
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Do you remember what you asked me the first time we met?””
She nodded.
“You were sick like me.””
Lucas smiled.
“And do you remember what I promised?””
“You promised to get a new inhaler.””
“I did.””
“You got three.””
He laughed.
“Yes. I did.””
Lily hugged him again.
Then she whispered:
“I'm glad I saved you.””
Lucas held her tightly.
“I'm glad you did too, sweetheart.””
From the piano room, Isabella began playing a familiar melody.
Daniel started singing along.
Sophie joined him.
Emily laughed.
Elias appeared in the doorway carrying the repaired bicycle.
And for the first time in the history of the Moretti mansion, nobody was afraid of the sound of children laughing.
Lucas looked around at his family.
Five children.
One woman.
One brother he had never known.
And a future that no longer belonged to the dead.
He had once inherited an empire built on fear.
Now he had something infinitely more valuable.
A home.
May you like
And this time, when the sun went down, he knew exactly where he would be.
*He would be home.*
