Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Missing Names
Nobody moved.
The stranger stood beneath the flickering lights of the underground archive, surrounded by decades of hidden records and stolen identities.
Daniel stared at him.
His face had lost all color.
“Dad…”
The word sounded impossible.
Not because he didn’t recognize the man.
Because he did.
Every memory he had buried came rushing back at once.
A father who disappeared.
A funeral with no body.
A childhood filled with unanswered questions.
And now the man stood in front of him.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But alive.
Emily stepped closer to Daniel.
“Your father?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The man looked at Noah.
Then at the file in Emily’s hands.
“So this is him.””
Hammer immediately moved between them.
“You’re going to explain who you are.””
The older man looked at Hammer.
A faint smile appeared.
“Ray Dawson.””
Hammer froze.
“How do you know my name?””
The man glanced at Daniel.
“Because my son talked about you constantly.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew about Hammer?””
“I knew about everything.””
The words were chilling.
Hammer’s hand tightened.
“Start talking.””
The man sighed.
“My name is Michael Carter.””
Daniel stared.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
Michael looked at him.
“So are you.””
The answer hit harder than expected.
For a moment, father and son simply stared at each other.
Eight years of impossible questions stood between them.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Michael looked away.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I had no choice.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“No choice?””
His voice rose.
“You know what happened after you disappeared?””
Michael looked at Emily.
Then Noah.
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He pointed toward Noah.
“You don’t know what it’s like watching your child grow up from a distance.””
Michael’s face changed.
Pain appeared.
“I do.””
Daniel stopped.
“What?””
Michael looked at Noah.
“Because I watched you.””
Silence.
Emily’s expression hardened.
“Excuse me?””
Michael looked at her.
“I watched Daniel because I was trying to keep him alive.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You have no idea what you did to us.””
Michael lowered his eyes.
“I know exactly what I did.””
“Then why?””
“Because Thomas wasn’t the beginning.””
Everyone became still.
Hammer frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Michael looked around the archive.
“This place?””
He gestured toward the files.
“Thomas didn’t create it.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who did?””
Michael looked at him.
“People like me.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Daniel stepped back.
“You were involved.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
Emily stared.
“You were one of them?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The word echoed.
Daniel’s anger returned.
“You were part of the reason my life was destroyed.””
Michael accepted it.
“Yes.””
Hammer looked at Daniel.
“Your father is admitting it.””
“I heard him.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
Michael continued.
“The program began as protection.””
“Protection for who?”” Hammer asked.
“People whose lives were in danger.””
Sarah looked at the files.
“And then?””
Michael’s expression darkened.
“Then people realized erased identities could be useful.””
Daniel understood.
“They started using it to disappear people.””
Michael nodded.
“Thomas was one of them.””
Emily held up Noah’s file.
“And my son?””
Michael looked at the file.
“That was the line Thomas crossed.””
“Why?””
“Because Noah wasn’t just connected to the research.””
Michael looked at Daniel.
“He was connected to the person who created it.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
Then at Michael.
“Who?””
Michael was silent.
Then he answered:
“Me.””
The archive felt smaller after that.
Like the walls themselves were closing in.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“You knew?””
Daniel shook his head immediately.
“No.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Daniel didn’t know everything.””
“Convenient.””
The bitterness in Emily’s voice was impossible to miss.
Michael accepted it.
“I deserve that.””
Daniel looked at his father.
“Explain.””
Michael walked toward the old files.
“When I discovered what Thomas was doing, I tried to shut the program down.””
Hammer crossed his arms.
“And Thomas stopped you.””
“Yes.””
Michael touched one of the cabinets.
“He erased me first.””
Daniel stared.
“Then why did you let me think you died?””
“Because Thomas believed I was gone.””
Michael looked at him.
“And as long as he believed that, you were safer.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You don’t get to call that safety.””
Michael looked at him.
“I know.””
The honesty made it worse.
Daniel looked away.
“I hated you.””
Michael nodded.
“I know.””
“I thought you abandoned me.””
“I know.””
“I spent years wondering why my father didn’t love me enough to stay.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Daniel’s anger finally cracked.
“Stop saying that.””
His voice became quieter.
“Stop saying you know.””
Michael looked at him.
“Because I don’t.””
A tear moved down the older man’s face.
“I know the facts.””
He looked at Noah.
“But I don’t know the pain.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the same thing Daniel had said to Noah.
The same thing Emily had said to Daniel.
Everyone in that room was carrying the weight of someone else’s absence.
A loud sound interrupted them.
A door upstairs slammed.
Sarah immediately turned.
“He found us.””
Hammer looked at her.
“Thomas?””
She nodded.
Michael’s face changed.
“No.””
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Michael looked toward the entrance.
“That isn’t Thomas.””
The footsteps above them became louder.
Multiple people.
Hammer moved toward the stairs.
“We need to leave.””
Daniel grabbed the files.
“We can’t.””
“We can.””
Hammer pointed.
“The evidence is not worth dying for.””
Michael shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
“What?””
Michael looked at Noah.
“They aren’t here for the files.””
Daniel froze.
“Then what?””
Michael whispered:
“They’re here for him.””
Emily immediately pulled Noah close.
“No.””
The lights went out.
Darkness covered the archive.
Then a voice echoed from the hallway.
“Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Not Thomas.
Someone else.
A woman.
Sarah’s face went pale.
“No.””
Hammer looked at her.
“You know that voice?””
Sarah didn’t answer.
The woman entered the archive.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Calm.
Confident.
And completely familiar.
Daniel stared.
“I thought you were dead.””
The woman smiled.
“That seems to happen a lot around you.””
Emily whispered:
“Who is she?””
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because he was too shocked.
Michael stepped forward.
“You.””
The woman smiled.
“Hello, Michael.””
Hammer looked between them.
“Someone please start explaining.””
Sarah finally spoke.
Her voice barely existed.
“She’s the first person Thomas ever erased.””
The woman looked at Noah.
Then at Daniel.
Then she said:
“No.””
Everyone turned.
She smiled slightly.
“I’m the person who taught Thomas how.””
Daniel took a step back.
The woman looked at him.
“Your father started the program.””
She pointed at Michael.
“But I perfected it.””
Hammer’s face hardened.
“And you are?””
The woman smiled.
“Clara Carter.””
Daniel stared.
“Carter?””
She nodded.
“My sister.””
Silence.
Emily looked at Daniel.
“You have a sister?””
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“I don’t.””
Clara smiled.
“That’s the point.””
She walked closer.
“Thomas didn’t erase Daniel Carter.””
She looked at Noah.
“He erased everyone who knew Daniel Carter existed.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
He finally understood.
Clara continued:
“And now the last piece is here.””
She reached toward Noah.
Emily stepped in front of him.
“You’re not touching my son.””
Clara looked amused.
“Your son?””
She tilted her head.
“Emily…”
A pause.
“You still don’t understand what happened before Noah was born.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Clara smiled.
Then she pulled out a document.
The same symbol.
The same files.
The same secrets.
But this time, one name was written across the top.
Not Noah.
Not Daniel.
Emily.
Clara handed it to Daniel.
“Ask your wife why she was chosen.””
Daniel looked down.
And the last piece of the mystery appeared.
A single sentence.
The sentence that explained why Thomas had spent years searching for Noah.
*“Emily Carter was never a patient.””*
Daniel read the next line.

His hands began shaking.
*“She was the original subject.””*
