Chapter 5 - THE THING SHE HID

I felt as though the ground had dissolved beneath me.
Claire… murdered?
I stood there in Vanessa’s living room, my heart hammering so hard it hurt, trying to reconcile those words with everything I remembered. Claire, fading slowly, her smile weak but her voice still warm, telling me she loved me, telling me to take care of our boy. Doctors coming and going. Beeping machines. The final, terrible silence.
I was there. I held her hand. I watched her heart stop.
“How?” I said, my voice cracking. “How was she murdered?”
Vanessa shook her head. “I don’t know the details. Kael told me she was given something. Something that looked exactly like her illness. By the time anyone realized… it was too late.”
“Who?” I demanded. “Who would do that?”
“He won’t tell me. He says only Claire knew the whole truth. And she hid it somewhere safe. Somewhere only you would know where to look.”
“Where?” I stepped toward her, gripping her shoulders. “Where did she hide it?”
Vanessa pulled back, trembling. “I don’t know! He wouldn’t tell me. He said Claire left clues. Small things. Things you see every day and never notice. He said once you understand what really happened to her… you’ll know exactly where she put it.”
“And you helped him.” The words tasted like ash. “You moved into my house. You gained my trust. All so you could help him find whatever Claire hid.”
Vanessa flinched as if I had struck her. Tears spilled faster.
“I didn’t have a choice,” she whispered. “He found out who I was. What my connection is to all of this. He threatened me. He said if I didn’t help him, he’d destroy my life. I did what I had to do to survive.”
“And chaining Caleb outside? Was that part of the plan too?”
Her face crumpled completely. She sank back onto the sofa, burying her face in her hands.
“No,” she sobbed. “That was… that was me being stupid. I was stressed. Scared. I wanted to punish him because you loved him more than you ever loved me. I lost control. And then Kael saw it. He saw the video. And he told me I had ruined everything. That now he had to move faster.”
She looked up, her eyes desperate.
“He didn’t intend to take Caleb yet, Adrian. But after last night—after you found the chain, after you started asking questions—he said you were too close. That you were going to figure it out. So he took him to force your hand.”
My blood ran cold. “So it’s my fault?”
“No!” She reached toward me, then pulled back when I flinched away. “It’s nobody’s fault but theirs. Please… I know you hate me. And you have every right. But please… believe me when I say I never wanted any of this. Especially not Caleb.”
I turned away from her and walked to the window. Down on the street, nothing looked different. Cars passed. A dog barked. People lived their lives while mine had been shattered into pieces.
Claire had been murdered. Someone had killed her. And they had covered it up so perfectly that not even I—her husband, the man who never left her side—had suspected a thing.
And before she died, she knew. She knew she was being killed. And she hid the proof.
“Tell me exactly what Kael said,” I told Vanessa, turning back to her. “Every word. Every clue. Everything.”
Vanessa took a deep, shaky breath. “He said: Claire knew she was running out of time. She knew they were watching. So she didn’t write a letter. She didn’t leave a file. She left pieces of herself. In plain sight. Everywhere you looked. You just have to put them together.”
Pieces of herself. In plain sight.
I thought of our house. The photos on the walls. The books on the shelves. The jewelry she wore. The things she touched every day.
And then I thought of the photograph Caleb kept on his nightstand. The one that had been face down when they took him.
Claire’s photograph. Caleb always kissed it. Always.
But this morning… someone had turned it over.
Kael. He had turned it over on purpose. To show me. To give me a starting point.
I pulled out my phone and called home. The call went straight to voicemail. I called again. Same thing.
My blood turned to ice.
“He cut the line,” I said, grabbing Vanessa’s arm. “I have to go back. Now.”
I ran for the door. Vanessa followed me, her voice frantic.
“Adrian! Be careful! He’s dangerous! And there’s something else—”
I paused, my hand on the doorknob. “What?”
She hesitated, swallowing hard, as if terrified to speak the words.
“Kael… he says Claire was carrying something. Something that changed everything. And when she died… she left it to Caleb.”
I stared at her. “What?”
May you like
Vanessa stepped closer, her voice barely a breath.
“Adrian… Kael is Claire’s brother.”
