Chapter 17 - THE BEGINNING OF THE END
We walked out of the office in silence. The key felt heavy in my pocket. The document Claire had signed felt heavier still.
When we reached the car, Vanessa leaned forward, her face tight with worry. Kael nodded once—slow, deliberate—and she exhaled deeply, slumping back against the seat. Caleb climbed into my lap, wrapping his arms around my neck, burying his face in my jacket.
“Is it over?” he whispered.
I kissed his hair. “It’s beginning to be, baby.”
We drove to the bank. Opened the safe deposit box. Just as Vance had promised: a full, signed confession. Pages and pages of it. Handwritten. Dated. Witnessed by his own lawyer. And beside it—legal documents transferring everything to Caleb. Vast fortunes. Companies. Real estate. Trusts. All of it.
And beneath those… one final letter. Addressed to me. From Claire. Dated the day before she died.
*My love,* it began. If you are reading this, then Elias has finally done what I hoped he would do. He has surrendered. It took everything to bring him to this place. But I knew he would not be able to hide from the truth forever. Caleb is safe now. You are safe. Kael is safe. Tell Kael I loved him. Tell him I waited my whole life to find him. Raise our son well. Teach him kindness. Teach him strength. And tell him… that even in the darkest hour… his mother loved him more than all the stars in the sky. I will be with you always. In every choice you make. In every step you take. I love you. Always.
I folded the letter and put it in my pocket beside the key. Beside everything she had left us.
That evening, Elias Vance’s full confession went public. Every news outlet carried it. Every headline. Every broadcast. The man who had been revered for decades stood exposed. His crimes. His secrets. His daughter. His grandson.

By morning, he had surrendered peacefully to federal authorities. He made no excuses. Asked for no mercy. Just one thing—that Caleb be kept safe and far away from the media storm.
It was granted.
